All-time favourite student anthem in you were an American
husker du were more influential and had more fans i daresay. I MUCH prefer Sugar FYI, just trying to keep the list honest to all of America if possible...

i would have NO PROBLEM with this poll if it simply said, current top 10 student anthems.

not to start (another) arguement... but I wouldn't consider VF very influential... Not many bands 'followed in their footsteps' like the ones you named above and it's pretty shallow lyrics and music. It's all mostly 3-4 chords and simple enough rythums etc.... but yes - they were very big in the US and hardly made a dent over here. Saw them at ATP last year and i think people only knew 3 songs of theirs really... Seen VF's 7-8 times actually. Not the biggest fan but they always seem to be playing at a fest or what not that i go to... Hmm... Husker Du should prolly be on this list too! Not Sugar though (already considered them...).

All-time favourite student anthem in you were an American
they have always been HUGE with college students in the US. I remember blasting them out my window when i was 16 or so and my neighbor (who was at least 10 years older came over and said they were his favorite band in college - lol!). Their fist album came out in '83 so that's 2-3 generations of students loving them... in fact, they were more popular than the likes of Pavement, but not with us elitists of course ;)

Here's the first 10 that come to mind. I'm originally from the US and 30 yo so remember a lot of this and have an old bro that was in to similar music so that helps. Also i'm sticking to what we called College Radio at the time (later to be called Alternative or Indie). I'm sure things like the Doors, Zepplin, Aerosmith had huge student followings but ignoring that for the purposes here... Pixies - Where is My Mind Pavement - Cut Your Hair Violent Femmes - Blister In The Sun Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart The Cure - Boys Don't Cry Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go The Velvet Underground - Herion The Stooges - Search and Destroy (or maybe I Wanna Be Your Dog - not a band i know too well tbh) Looking at that list the most recent song is Smells Like Teen Spirit..... almost 15 years ago!! will maybe have to think on this for more recent songs... 'Float On' Would be in there for sure...

close... i'd say many of those are a bit too unknown to make the top 10 tbh, but in top 50 for sure (er.. maybe not superchunk tho). Main one you forgot was Violent Femmes. Also - another you forgot on the UK one was Carter USM. easily top 10 ever for UK i'd say

how about something a bit fresh and I'll do a decent stab at the US version... anyone fancy it? Will take a bit of thought first so before I lose the brain cells I'll check

what is snow patrols next single
yes - for the worse :) in the same way as cold play in a way... parachutes was a good album... but the over production and blandness on later albums make them in effect pop drivel. don't think i've mentioned them on this thread (and too lazy to check) but make SURE you ALL have Reindeer Section - Son of Evil Reindeer if you like Snow Patrol at all! One of the best albums since 2000... it's a side project of Gary Lightbodys...

has everyone that thinks this is a good album gotten their first two albums? I certainly hope so, as they are much better than the last two albums, with 'When It's All Over...' being a SUBERB album...

echo and the bunnymen
yeah - was Head over Heals... remember it now (that you say it) :) I have the normal version I think...

echo and the bunnymen
yer right... there was another TFF song in the movie... can't remember which one (shout maybe?). been ages since i've seen it... my GF won't watch it as it makes her sad... she just moved out tho so can watch what I want now!! (she's off to uni, and i'm moving to london)

what's wrong with Tears for Fears?! they were my first favorite band (that wasn't one of my parents). Still rate their first album 'The Hurting' very highly as well (yes, that's the one with Mad World on it). But do agree their later releases were pants!

which record label is the most indie?
wha?!?! that's my arguement!!!
-
echo and the bunnymen
oh - and the only reason people say beatles were the first 'boy band' is they were the first group of good looking lads to be in a band (as a band) and be pop stars etc. Anyone with half a brain cell should realize it didn't relate to their music as they wrote and played it - unlike current 'boy bands' who only look good and can dance (note I didn't say sing, as these days most of what you hear is fixed in the studio and rarely live. In some cases they don't even sing the original!)

echo and the bunnymen
that was rhetorical right?

of course the goal posts change! The music changes!! argh!! You (I should say us as am 30, but I'm disagreeing with you here) old folks need to understand the definitiaon DOES change!! Something as all encompasing as a big genre term like indie, or even alternative has will change every 5-10 years with the music that represent it. Also, When most of the indie labels from the 80's/90's are now owned by majors but still putting out non-mainstream music, it doesn't mean the bands aren't indie anymore! Maybe we just need to call all this 'Non-Mainstream' and stop arguing?! ...just a thought... (dunno why i keep on this subject... time to give I spose! In fact - I'M DONE NOW!). Back to E&tBM - listened to crocodile last night, been ages and really enjoyed it!

uh... how old do you think I am?!
-
which record label is the most indie?
as i've argued so many times I don't care what labels bands are on so not really sure which bands I know are on the above... that said, am quite sure there have been some bands i liked on mute so will go with that one....

they released the duet with M. Waynwrihgt yet? It's the only song I care much for on the album actually!

echo and the bunnymen
don't know of any indie bands with that long a contract (heck, i can't think of more then 5 bands PERIOD with something like that), but plenty on shorter ones, mainly when those labels are small labels owned by a major label. It was much easier to differentiate back in the 80's/90's as there were more (independent) indie labels. Now with so many owned by majors the lines have greyed. Even Sub-Pop is owned by a major, but still acts like an indie. In your black and white defintion where would bands there fit in? There CAN be indie bands on major labels as well as non-indie bands on indie labels. Time to move on now, neither of us are wrong, I just argue the definition of indie is in the sound(s), ethos - not the label :)
-
echo and the bunnymen
that's my point! it has no bearing what label they were on!! There are indie bands on major labels and non-indie bands on Indie labels. The lines are not black and white...
