The Big Brother effect. Lets hope the Steps song that was also performed on CBB is not due a comeback!

A good demonstration of the new rules in effect I suppose. Would have been nice to have a classic track back but I suppose the randomness of the track selection is all part of the joke! (or Moyles wanted to get Evans on board! ;) )

I can see Mika being a loooong runner given he is No.1 a fortnight before release and this being a traditionally dismal time of year for sales.

A surprisingly large amount actually. Mika sold 20,000 downloads and Just Jack shifted 13,000. Physicals will only add about 50% to Just Jacks total at the most therefore still not as much as Mika last week. IIRC Gnarls Barkley sold 30,000-ish the week they were No.1 on downloads alone. I can easily see Mika rising to that amount this week.
  5. You sound like the O.C.C.!!!
  6. They are very grim sales for Billboard.

I'm worried now.....I'm forever buying 100 copies by accident! I always MEAN to just buy 1, but you know how it is, another 99 just fall onto the counter! :D
  9. :cheer: Pat Shorrt! My friend picked up The Jumbo Breakfast Roll single when he was over in Ireland and its a great party tune....just wish more people here knew it!
  10. I would never have thought "Heartbeats" was the longest chart runner of the year!

Looks like McFly are going to continue their chart pattern of the first three singles from each album peaking at 1 - 1 - 3. Spooky!

Surely there must be some rule that excludes overly-hyped singles from the chart. It must be counted as chart-rigging? I'm ignoring any mention of X-F****R from this topic.
  14. Crazy voting on here that means that Mud and The Darkness are excluded while pap like Bo Selecta and The Waitresses are in there.
  15. Has an English Language song ever made No.1 in Japan?
  16. Good to see that Australia gets all it's idol/reality TV chaff out of the way in time for christmas....wish we would follow suit.
  17. At Number 23 are the Pogues with 'Fairytale Of New York' which, as I mentioned last week, is chart eligible due to its Christmas 2005 re-release although this actually means it will vanish from the listings in Christmas week itself Will this single then "reappear" when download rules change on Jan 1st??
  18. Rubbish! Theyve ruined a classic by slapping a Vengaboys beat to it.
  19. Wasn't quite such a 4-way battle in Australia was it. Interesting that they seem to have bought almost the reverse of the UK.

Mariah Carey is fast becoming the xmas song of choice for this generation.

I think Take That will be pipped to the Christmas No.1 at the last minute by Mr Blobby's Greatest Hits.... :P
  22. I did a double take when I read this....I thought he was referring to the transexual Nadia in Big Brother!
  23. Not necessarily. Look at another act from the 50s/60s that performed mainly cover material and never really wrote his own songs. Repeated the same pre-orchestrated act when performing his music. Released a lot of DIRE material along with some songs which will (like it or not) be remembered for years to come. Elvis has now left the building........

Music is music, whether it is written by the bands or just performed them. As it is, there are more people out there who want to own Westlifes album this week than way to own the Oasis one. And that is what the chart has always been about. It is not a chart of the Top 40 most talented acts. It is a chart of the Top 40 most popular acts. Even so, if I was an Oasis fan, I would consider the "hits" collection a slap in the face, missing many of their hits from it. Its not as if there wasn't space as each CD only has 9 tracks on it.

I really hope Westlife storm to No.1 on Sunday. I'm not a Westlife fan at all. I neither like nor hate them. But the pathetic response of the media (the Sun campaign etc...) to a band legitimately being more popular than all others is just sad. It reeks of an attempt at chart fixing and is contributing to the rapid death of the charts.
