  1. I think a lot of you forget that it's the favourite female artists of the SITE, not of the whole wide world and consisting of every year of music and every impact every woman has ever made on the charts or on the culture of music. Yes it's annoying and slightly perplexing that some people do find the likes of Pixie Lott et al to be the best female singer in their little spheres of existence, but the outcome of this poll isn't going to change to face of humanity. So stop ruining my commentary
  2. I am thinking a revamp of the rules for next year non? :P

I never thought I would find the material of a reality TV show winner so fantastic. Clarkson rose to fame on the first season of American Idol back in 2002. Her debut album 'Thankful' is very cringe-worthy and showcases a variety of different genres and vocal styles. Almost as if they were unsure which direction to take her in (kudos to 'Beautiful Disaster' though). However, then came the unstoppable 'Breakaway' era which spawned the singles 'Since You Been Gone', 'Behind These Hazel Eyes' and 'Because of You' amongst others. A lot of people find the album samey but there's not a bad track on there imo. It's definately the strongest of Clarkson's albums from a musical perspective, though lyrically she is immaculate on the 2007 follow up 'My December', which is home to the likes of 'Judas' and 'Sober' (the latter is my personal favourite Clarkson song). Sadly, 'My December' underperformed on a global scale so the next record regained some of the friendly, upbeat pop-rock that had shot her to worldwide acclaim half a decade previously. I was disappointed with 'All I Ever Wanted'. It was a solid album but I struggled to find any sort of progression. It was a step back from 'My December', in an attempt to try and recreate a the success of 'Breakaway'.

Clarkson's 5th album is due at some point in the future and the heaps of demos that have leaked all over the web have been very promising, yet showcase the same issues I had with the last record. I don't think that's a bad thing but the tastes of the public are shifting and the record company need to stop focusing on past glories and ultilise the fantastic abilities that Clarkson has to offer.

  3. I like how you say Madonna "bombarded the charts constantly from '84-'95" as though her '98 album wasn't much, much more successful than the two which came before it! :D I'm being pedantic though. I reckon Madonna has been tainted by the last album and the GH but you absolutely CANNOT argue with her ridiculously amazing back catalogue. There's SO MUCH to choose from, it's SO varied, she used to be one HELL of a songwriter. What a woman.

I meant with regards to consecutive top 10 singles.

And in my opinion, the true queen of every other bitch in this countdown is Madonna. Years before, she became BFFs with Timbaland, wore a hideous purple leotard and stole starving African children from their homes, Madonna was the ultimate female popstar. She bombarded the charts constantly from 1984-1995 never missing the top 10 with her endless releases. She may not be the most talented vocalist, but Madonna's ever changing image and visual exploits have kept her at the top of her game for nearly 30 years. I've always felt her input since 'Ray Of Light' has been pretty awful with a rare return to form in 2005 with 'Confessions On A Dancefloor'. She then decided to release the hideous 'Hard Candy' which is the perfect way to destroy your perfect discography. Here's Madonna at numero 9. My commentary is a bit screwed because I'm watching 'True Blood' heh.

I loved how all the Kylie fans suddenly showed up and put her in first place, boosting her into the top 10 for a second consecutive year. In the process, more people put her at #1 in their chart than any other artist. The Australian pop princess released her 11th studio album 'Aphrodite' last year and despite the amazing 'All The Lovers' and a couple of other gem, I wasn't that sold on it tbh. It was a major step down from 'X, though I'm sure I'm of the minority with that opinion. Kylie has been releasing music for over two decades and has experimented with a heap of genres over the course of her career. After the mid 1990s, it seemed that Kylie's career was over, however, a pair of golden hot pants and a revived disco sound saw Kylie storm back to the top of the charts in 2000, a decade after her last chart topping single. Following on from her 'Light Years' album, she released the Cathy Dennis penned 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' in 2001 and the rest is history....

  6. So the loss of Christina, Leona and Alicia from out top ten means that Madonna and Katy Perry climb into it from last year's #11 and #12 respectively. We also have the highest of all 27 new entries still to come in the form of the unstoppable Adele.

Alicia Keys has spawned four successful albums on a global scale since the year of 2001. It's nearly a decade since we heard that voice. Her debut record 'Songs In A Minor' earned her 5 grammys and scored a further four of the awards from her second effort 'The Diary of Alicia Keys'. Alicia is one of those artists that always seems a bit underrated to the general public but delivers again and again. I was surprised a lot of her albums are actually pretty decent all the way through and not just filler-orientated. Her appearance on Jay Z's 'Empire State Of Mind' in 2009 earned her a whole new audience and saw her fourth album 'The Element of Freedom' out perform her previous two in the UK at least. I find her voice a bit too much to stomach at times but she is a true talent and arguably more so than most of the upcoming top ten but ho-hum. Despite no new material since last year's poll, Alicia holds up surprisingly well falling 5 places.

Now as a LOT of people have complained about the quality of the artists up for voting and the fact that 'so and so are so high', you ONLY have yourselves to blame from the start!

I don't mind Minaj. YES she's very overrated and her songs (minus 'Superbass') are generally shite. But the general surprise that she's so high is quite shocking considering she got all the votes below. She's certainly something different from the typical moulded female artist, but after only releasing one album, I do question how some people voted but hey-ho. Here she is at #12, as the second highest new entry, only behind Adele in that respect.

P.S I'm not singling her out. Just trying to prove that the results are fair and decided by BJ :P

SECOND HIGHEST CLIMBER AFTER KE$HA. What can I say about JLO? Back at the start of 2000, she had it all. A successful pop career, movie roles falling at her feet and an endless string of romances and marriages. Her behind and figure in general were considered world wide treasures. However, the star faded quickly and by the middle of the decade the Lopez was struggling to hold onto the reigns of her former glory. Cue Simon Cowell and Fox. Two of the world's biggest evils. Jennifer landed a judging role on the long-running reality series American Idol. As the most watched show in the whole of the USA (:/), the move threw Lopez back into the spotlight after years of flopping both on the charts and the big screen. Armed with the frickin infectious 'On The Floor', JLo was back, scoring her biggest hit EVER - topping charts the world over. High profile flops aside, JLO has racked up an astonishing 19 chart hits in the UK with only one of those failing to peak within the top 20. Here's hoping the biggest career turnaround in music history is not just a fluke.

Next up is Leona Lewis, who recently sparked up a lot of controversy with the premiere of her new single 'Collide'. The age old 'you stole my idea blah blah blah' debacle popped up with DJ Avicci claiming the track steals the beat from his song 'Penguin'. 'Collide' is the lead single to be released from Lewis' third album since winning the X Factor crown at the end of 2006. After the world wide success of 'Bleeding Love' and debut album 'Spirit', the follow up 'Echo' received a lukewarm reception - so to be honest, it really is a case of make or break for the as yet untitled new record. I like Leona. People call her bland, but I think her shy personality is part of her appeal. I do confess her last album bored me to tears though. 'Collide', whilst weak and not a great comeback is definitely a step in the right direction for the singer's sound.

Next up we have Gwen Stefani who is strong enough to remain in the same position she achieved last year! I was always more of a fan of No Doubt's material than Gwen's solo output and the cogs have been grinded into motion as the band have reunited and are expected to unleash their first new album of material since 2002 at some point this year. Other than the massive 'Don't Speak', I think 'Simple Kind Of Life' and 'Just A Girl' are worthy of mentions from the No Doubt back catalogue. There's loads more but I confess I haven't listened to the albums in a while :( Gwen became one of the biggest popstars on the planet for a couple of years back in the mid-00s with two successful studio albums and a string of worldwide hits. I think her appeal is the fact she can blend the genres of Ska, pop and rock whilst in No Doubt and then go and release something as chavaliscious as 'Hollaback Girl' for instance and dominate the urban orientated American market. One thing I do miss about solo-Gwen is those sexy little Japanese floozies she always had running around with her. Good times.

Next up the first of 3 artists to fall out of last year's top 10 and not surprisingly, it's the biggest flop of them all in the form of Christina Aguilera. Bursting onto the scene in late 1999 with the chart topping 'Genie In A Bottle', Christina cemented her status as one of the bubblegum pop royals alongside N*Sync and Britney. She had a fantastic run of singles during the 2000s including one of the best pop albums of the last decade in the form of 'Stripped'. Sadly, Christina likes to leave huge gaps between her releases. She's like a less interesting version of Kate Bush in that respect. Not to mention that her output has slowly gotten worse over the years. I was never fond of 'Back To Basics'. It was too 'show-off' to me and the less said about 'Bionic' the better. Whether or not Christina will ever be able to mount a full scale comeback who knows? She's currently part of NBC's 'The Voice', which has gone down a storm in the US and has even had a moderate sized hit with Maroon 5 whose frontman Adam Leveine was also part of the judging panel.

Then again if J-Lo can do it why can't Christina?

Never liked Lily Allen. Her continued popularity continues to boggle me. She does have some decent songs but for the most part, I can't quite place my finger on the dislike. Despite not releasing any material at all last year she climbs into the top 20 (one of 5 artists to do so or debut). Lily is of course the daughter of Keith Allen - the douche behind the 1998 football related hit 'Vindaloo'. In her own right, she's released two top 2 albums in the UK both which have sold in the region of a million copies. She's also scored two chart toppers, though 2009's 'The Fear' is comparatively bigger to 2006's 'Smile' due to the shifting market. Her second effort is FAR better than 'Alright Still', but I still felt something was lacking. I think it's a combination of her personality, voice and lyrics that grate on me a little. Especially on songs like 'Littlest Things' which are nothing more than a wail to my ears...

Next up we have Avril Lavigne. I was pretty hooked on the Canadian pop-rock princess back in the day. Her debut album 'Let Go' was flawless when I was in a vat of angst just perfect for a marathon of 'Dawson's Creek'. Every track is still pretty listenable, despite the fact that the material has not aged all that well. Of course 'Under My Skin' released in 2004 will always be my favourite album from Avril. It's darker and moodier and shows a decent evolution in Avril's style. 'The Best Damn Thing' in 2007 took a MASSIVE step back, though is arguably the most pop fueled effort released by Avril and home to her biggest hit 'Girlfriend'. The singer finally returned in 2010 with 4th studio album 'Goodbye Lullaby'. There's some pretty decent tracks on there such as 'Push' and 'Wish You Were Here' which are more than capable of standing up to the might of Avril's back catalogue, but for the whole, the album was very samey and not in a good way. Sales wise its under performed suggesting that the career of Avril is heading down the gutter. It's to be expected when the album lacks any sort of major stand out track when her contemporaries are releasing gems like 'Firework', 'Bad Romance' and the like. She evidently remains a BJ favourite though, shooting up 7 places.

The Rowland is actually 30 years old now. She looks mighty hot if that's so :o. Anyway, Kelly as we all know rose to fame as one third of Destiny's Child. After appearing on Nelly's mammoth hit 'Dilemma' back in 2002, the singer launched her own solo record 'Simply Deep' which was a surprise #1 in early 2003. Other than the beautiful 'Stole', I wasn't very impressed personally. Kelly has struggled to shift albums since then, returning every few years with a minor hit such as 'Work' in 2008 or 'Commander' last summer. She's embraced her dance-pop roots in favour of her soul days on recent releases and is part of one of the best summer anthems of recent years imo ('When Love Takes Over). Rowland's latest album 'Here I Am' has finally been released and she holds strongly in the top 20 this year. It'll be interesting to see how her addition to the judging panel of the UK X Factor will affect her career...

Tying with Rowland at #20 is Columbian crazy Shakira. I still remember the days when she'd sing about her breasts being confused with mountains and perform a very erotic mud dance. Shakira's music career has been in full swing for 2 decades now, during which she has demonstrated her versatility by releasing a mixture of rock n roll, pop, Latin and Middle Eastern influenced music. Her first foray into the English charts came with 2002's 'Laundary Service' which landed two top 3 hits (amongst them the infamous 'Whenever Wherever'). Wikipedia reports that Shakira's 2006 smash 'Hips Don't Lie' was the biggest selling single in the world over the last decade. Her world cup hit from 2010 has also had astonishing success - being deemed one of the most viewed videos on the internet and the best selling single ever released to be associated with the football event.

Returning I be and starting us off tonight is the 3rd highest new entry from former Pussycat Doll, Nicole Scherzinger. It really is just like having PCD though but without the rest of them in the background dancing like sluts and offering the odd ad-lib. After a failed solo attempt back in 2007 with the unforgettable (for all the wrong reasons) 'Baby Love', it looked like Nicole's solo prospects were no more. However, working with Red One on lead single 'Poison' which is an infectious little screech of venom, and scoring a #1 hit with 'Don't Hold Your Breath' has totally reversed the odds. With constant television promotion slots, coverage on the UK X Factor and soon the US version as well, I think Nicole is going to be an unstoppable force over the next couple of years. 'Killer Love' is a very solid pop album. Even the tracks that try too hard are still passable.

Robyn still has a massive fan base and decent radio support but her career is looking a bit peaky in the UK as of late. Despite two albums released last year under one volume 'Body Talk', sales have declined massively from her huge 2007 comeback with the sensational 'With Every Heartbeat'. That said and Robyn is still doing what she's been doing since the 1990s - creating decent pop tunes that most stars outside of Sweden would kill to get their hands on. For me she's yet to better that infamous #1, but doesn't mean her material isn't still wonderful.

  16. TBF the Jessica & Hoyt thing was ALWAYS boring. I've never really bought it. There is no chemistry between the actos at all. Maybe that's just me.

I am LOVING season 4 though! There's still a lot going on but it's definately better paced than the last series. Eric is actually rather sweet when he doesn't remember who he is and I agree with Pam being absolutely amazing. I have always loved her - even in the books. Her rotting flesh and that veil were hilarity.

And I honestly could not see any reason why Tara would EVER get involved with a vampire. She evidently hates them etc. Then again she is one of the few characters that is utterly unpredictable imo. Am loving this witch stuff though.

The books are a hell of a lot more structured and interesting than TVD ones. But then TVD series barely follows its literary counterpart so I don't expect this to either. Regardless, it looks fantastic image and cast wise. Not sure about the content though. But then again TVD was very slow and dull at first and now I regard it as one of my favourite shows on television.

    Artwork is stunning.

  18. People actually LIKE ANTM? OKKKKKKKK.

That said I really can't wait for 'Ringer'. Anything that brings the goddess incarnate that is SMG back to our screens is welcome. I do fear for it though on The CW, but I guess it's the best shot it has of having a good run as long as it doesn't tank on lift off (which I highly doubt).
