Daily US Airplay Updates - JUL 2013 - SEP 2014
Not happy that Rather Be has been stalling on airplay. It's still holding up remarkably well on iTunes, top 10 despite so many blockbuster new releases.

US iTunes Top 100 [JUL-DEC 2014]
Back in 2010 when Chris Brown somewhat blatantly ripped off Calvin Harris on Yeah3x, Harris tweeted: "Because Chris Brown is an international celebrity doesn't make it OK to rip off a guy from UK not many people have heard of." He is certainly very popular today! And outperforming Chris Brown at least on the Hot 100.

But they don't play country music on pop/Top 40 stations except for some rare exceptions. Country radio and really the overall country music industry is pretty independent and operates from a Nashville hub rather than LA. There have been some interesting articles recently about how they're dealing with artists that cross over to pop like Taylor Swift. Anyway I seem to recall from recent headlines that Garth Brooks has more than a few fans in Ireland.

Thanks! Honestly I'm not a loon but I saw Britney during the Onyx Hotel tour 10 years ago and she sang every single song live and was brilliant. People don't realize how talented a vocalist she actually is... nor how hard she works. She doesn't need to sing each night in Vegas but she does. The only pop star who works as hard as Britney is Gaga, who tours relentlessly.

I think that's fair. I was a teenager in 1999 and there were significantly fewer options. Few people bought CD singles, and internet was too slow for it to be any real use in exploring new music. To a large degree, whatever MTV and radio played became popular. Interestingly enough, I was probably most exposed to new music on The Box channel since they only played requests. Also worth noting is that Britney burst on the scene with a new writer/producer named Max Martin who helped her introduce a new sound that basically defined pop music for the next few years. ...Baby One More Time was Martin's first Hot 100 no. 1 and he's currently sitting atop with his 18th (Shake it Off). All that said, Britney never would have had any staying power without exceptional talent and media savvy. She is also very adept at partnerships and collaborations. She and Christina Aguilera both made out with Madonna on stage but which one turned that coverage into a hugely popular collaboration song? And between Max Martin, The Neptunes, Darkchild, Guy Sigsworth, etc... she has worked with all the great pop writers and producers of the 21st century.

You mean solo female artist, right? I'm not certain but I would guess Neneh Cherry back in the late 80s. Wikipedia says Kisses on the Wind reached #8 in 1989 and Buffalo Stance reached #3 in 1988.

It's hard to imagine a modern day Britney. It would require a MASSIVE debut hit at the level of Call Me Maybe along with an instant popular recognition the likes of which only a handful of artists have achieved in the last decade. I think only Katy Perry, Adele, Gaga and Rihanna have achieved that, and only Perry did it as quickly as Britney. Ariana is the latest big thing but she's going to need really GOOD songs to allow her to crossover from the tween market. Problem is absolutely good enough. The Way wasn't, nor is Break Free. But she's just at the start of her career so we shall see.

US Hot 100 - 09/06/2014
A little sad that All About that Bass will never get to #1 now. Even though I don't like that song, it has clearly been the most popular song in the country for the past three weeks or so. I can't believe the love for Anaconda on this forum!! Nicki does her thing fine, I admit, but the song's production and marketing campaign (i.e., controversial ass shaking) is totally derivative and completely lazy. But I guess if you weren't around when Baby Got Back was a phenomenon then it's new to you. I certainly hope Mix a Lot is making a mint from the royalties because he is 90% responsible for this song's success. Well deserved #1 for Taylor. I love when songs debut at #1 and it's pretty rare these days. Anyone else surprised that Usher's new campaign is either slow out the gates or completely flopping?

Canadian Chart Thread 2014
It's possible but remember Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe hit #1 in her native Canada months before the US or Europe. Also they have an airplay law that mandates a certain percentage of songs played be by Canadian artists.

Not to mention their homegrown Magic!'s Rude only got to #6 (vs. #1 in US/UK).

US iTunes Top 100 [JUL-DEC 2014]
She's done several late night shows, performances throughout the country for the past couple months including big festivals, all over media from in-flight magazines to TIME and Entertainment Weekly. All over social media too. I'm not worried about Hideaway yet -- things just take forever here. Sam Smith's big push began with SNL in March and Stay With Me probably still hasn't peaked. But it is remarkable to me that Smith and Kiesza have had to work their asses off promoting off of a huge push from their record companies... while Rather Be seems (thus far) to be climbing the charts purely on the strength of the song. Apparently no one can figure out who the hell sings it (there are a lot of people googling "Rihanna violin song 2014")

US iTunes Top 100 [JUL-DEC 2014]
I actually don't think they've been in the US for a few weeks and didn't spend much time here at all when they did (two shows, a few radio promos). This is likely just a confluence of word of mouth, social media, radio airplay, etc. There is no hype (whereas Kiesza, for instance, is EVERYWHERE). They are coming here next month for a bunch of shows and I expect them to be doing a lot more promo then. I complained all spring about how slow this was coming but it may actually be timed perfectly. With the momentum Rather Be has now (over 1 million youtube views per DAY), I can see this being top 3 on the Hot 100.

I'm showing #7 now, but it and Maps, Chandelier and Boom Clap all seem to be bouncing around.

US Hot 100 - 08/16/2014
Grande is the "it" girl right now but neither Minaj nor Jessie J has had a big radio hit in the past couple years. I think a lot of the draw is the song itself. Never underestimate what Max Martin can do for your career. For those who follow the points closer -- any realistic chance Sam Smith could sneak in a week at #1? He's selling more than Rude and is currently #1 on pop radio.

US iTunes Top 100 [JUL-DEC 2014]
Meanwhile a hip-hip/country hybrid appeared out of nowhere into #11 (Do It Like This). Between the unusually large number of country artists, tweeny youtube (or whatever) stars, and some really bad comebacks (Anaconda is absolutely atrocious and Maps is par for the course Maroon 5 trash), the iTunes chart is a hot mess at the moment. I'm hoping/assuming some of the summer's sleeper hits will eventually prevail (Chandelier, Boom Clap, Stay with Me, Rather Be).

#1s From Around the World (2014)
While I completely agree with your point in general (it always seems like pandering to me, Christina Aguilera's Spanish language album being a good example), I am quite certain that Enrique is Spanish. :)

US Career Album Sales
This is an interesting list but it is clearly skewed toward acts that had big hits in the early 2000s when people bought many, many more albums in general. Even the acts that still sell well today (e.g. Beyonce, Maroon 5) had their biggest selling albums released in the early 2000s. There are a few exceptions (Adele) but generally a HUGE album in 2001 was 10 million and a HUGE album today is 4 million. In my opinion, this makes it rather useless to compare "new artists since 2000." That said, there are some surprises here. Timberlake is way lower than I would have expected, but then again he has only released three albums...

US Hot 100 - 07/05/2014
There's actually an article in Billboard with all the reggae no 1s on the Hot 100: http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/...-revives-reggae I'm pretty surprised they consider Maroon 5's One More Night reggae... if so then I think Ace of Base's The Sign should be too, or at the very last All That She Wants (although I guess that only got to #2 in the US).

US iTunes Top 100 [JAN-JUN 2014]
This is the lowest it has been in weeks, actually. It had been in the 200s for a while. It is used in a Starbucks commercial (a horribly, horribly edited version) :) TMXEQ1f0aQo

US iTunes Top 100 [JAN-JUN 2014]
Several of this year's UK #1s have been hovering around in the US iTunes Chart. Currently Waves is #148, I Got U is #427, Tsunami is #846, and obviously Rather Be we've been talking about for some time is at #70. Hideaway has become a hit in Canada so I think that bodes well for success in the US.

US iTunes Top 100 [JAN-JUN 2014]
Clean Bandit up to #84!!! I saw them last night here in New York (sold out show) but they're only doing two US shows so I'm not sure if that's what's helping...

US Hot 100 - 06/14/2014
This week six countries are represented in the Hot 100 top 10: UK (Charli XCX, Calvin Harris) Australia (Iggy Azalea) France (DJ Snake) Norway (Nico & Vinz) Canada (MAGIC!) US

US Hot 100 - 06/07/2014
Also very unusual for a Hot 100 top 10 is representation from five countries this week: Australia (Iggy), UK (Charli XCX), Norway (Nico & Vinz), France (DJ Snake) and the US.

British Chart Entries on Billboard Hot 100
Britster you are a rock star!! Thank you for posting this. Fun trip down memory lane. Haven't thought about that song in years! :o Had no idea these charted in the US. So many other surprises. I also had no clue George Michael had a further two top 10 singles in 1996... I really thought his chart dominance had ended earlier. Can't believe Garbage charted with Vow before Only Happy When it Rains and Del Amitri three years before Roll to Me. Hell I didn't even know Cathy Dennis was British!! Can't wait to explore this list in more detail. Many thanks.
