  1. This "survey" and accompanying news release is representative of the very problem! Instead of giving any empirical evidence or scientific proof, it lists a bunch of celebrities whom students model. Who cares WHO they are and did we really need a LIST of names determined by a clearly informal survey of teachers? The article may inspire true debate about celebrity culture here -- we're all pretty smart people -- but the average person reading that will more likely respond "Paris before Leona?? And where is Rihanna on that list???"

Re: Leona getting to #1 I'm waiting to hear what JackJones says about the possibility, but I think Leona will really struggle against Mariah and Usher because she is only #40 airplay in Rhythmic (and no bullet to be found) and not even charting on Urban airplay. The other two will donimate Top 40/Pop and also these other airplay charts. It wouldn't surprise me if she got stuck at #2 or #3 behind another loooooooooong running #1 (maybe Usher, then Mariah).
  3. You even got the spelling right! But brace yourself. This sad franchise isn't over yet. We're already being bombarded for trailers for "Superhero Movie" with Pamela Anderson :(
  4. Now #1 on iTunes. It's strange, since many of us have worshipped this song for 10+ years. But I suppose there is nothing wrong with the T-Pain generation discovering a classic like this...

Totally agree, Phantom fans waited 15 years for a film adaption of the musical and somehow Schumacher got a hold of it and delivered an aborted fetus of a film, as usual. I've seen Mamma Mia and it's good fun, but like The Producers and Dreamgirls, I don't think a film version could really improve upon the stage musical. But I guess an optomistic way of looking at it is... the film will be good for people who don't have the means to fork over $130 to Broadway. Afterall, everyone deserves some sing-songy Abba cheese, rich and poor

Okay I have to say that the new Jordin Sparks song really is amazing, and its chart performance reflects that. I think it's a future #1... even if it takes a few weeks
  7. I can't wait for Obama to be voted President because all you people (none of whom have ever lived in the US) will be proven wrong. EDIT: Made a generalization last night I regret... still, I hope Obama's election will prove America isn't as racist (anymore) as many believe it is.
  8. What I wonder is are these singers getting anything out of this? I would doubt it. They probably all signed contracts indicating Cowell will get every penny of every download until they sign a record deal at the end of the show.
  9. Yes, I have many, many friends who were diagnosed with all kinds of disorders when they were teens. Bi-polar, depression, social anxiety, even psychosis and OCD. Thus begins a daily cocktail of various mind-altering drugs that only make things worse! Then the disorder becomes a crutch. "I have a disease, I can't feel better." That kind of attitude. Later on in life, when they grow up, they wonder if any of those treatments ever did any good. Anyway I don't mean to turn this discussion into one of pscyhiatric drugs (and I'm not at ALL qualified to have that argument), but I just think it's disturbing that 1 in 10 Americans takes these drugs. And that drug companies are profiting by the billions.
  10. The fact is these "mass shootings," as frightening and horrific as they are, do not represent even 1% of gun crime in the United States. The vast, vast majority of gun crime exists in urban environments amidst gangs and drug crime. And innocent people die all the time in the crossfire. It's just underreported because who cares about the poor black people living in the ghetto? I would agree with Tyler that part of the problem is the huge, huge number of people on prescription drugs. What was once prescribed as a last resort is now prescribed en masse at the first sign of any problem. Teens get upset and book an appointment with a therapist. They walk out with prescriptions for mood stabilizers, antidepressants, anti-anxiety pills, etc. It's a culture of drugs that has probably been institutionalized by the drug companies. The result is 30 million (seriously) drugged out people walking the streets with no comprehension of the power of these mind-altering substances. And the way doctors will just "up the dose" or try something new half-hazardly instills the idea that taking more pills will work better.
  11. I like this album a lot and it might be friendlier to new T&S fans but I definitely prefer some of their earlier stuff. I think the Con is consistently good but lacks a breathtaking, life-changing ballad like My Number, Where Does the Good Go or Welcome Home.
  12. And WHY did they wait until NOW to do this?? Did it take six years of waterboarding and flushing Qur'ans down toilets to get to this point? Bull$h!t - just like Saddam Hussein was found shortly before the 2004 election, this is all the Bush administration trying to distract the public's attention. Democrats are showing up to vote for their presidential nominee in numbers 2-3x that of republicans. What better way to distract from this massive, anti-Bush movement then to throw a bunch of "Terrorists" into some media circus "trial of the century." Worse, maybe they are trying to provoke a terrorist attack so that warmonger Mccain can rally his militaristic cause and win the election. Or $h!t, maybe a terrorist attack will give Bush an excuse to declare martial law and cancel the election. I put NOTHING past these disgusting murderers.
  13. Yael Naim is of course from the newest Apple commercial, as were CSS and Feist. "New Soul" is #1 on iTunes in France.
  14. Are you sure this wasn't her big comeback single in 1993?
  15. Once again I wish I could add to the discussion but all I have to say is that I love this song!! I downloaded their full album and it's awesome... totally recommend it.
  16. Don't have much to add except... I absolutely love this!!!!
  17. Looks like she's doing really well. #2 with 75% in. It'd be great if she could jump to #1 by the end but it looks unlikely. http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi
  18. Ledger's family would have a pretty decent shot at a defamation lawsuit. That is hate speech, period. The problem is nutcases like Gibson thrive on controversy and negative publicity. How many here had heard of the guy before this? Exactly...
  19. Shocking. What can you really say about this? He was a fantastic talent and due for many more great performances. His performance in Brokeback was riveting.
  20. If anyone is so stupid as to care about his/her body after death, then he/she can opt-out. Otherwise organ donation should be assumed. Period.
  21. The problem too is that combustion engines are so cheap. Developing countries are using the absolute cheapest, dirtiest methods to industrialize, especially China. Of course, that's how all the developed countries did it too. But we didn't know the damage we were causing 200 years ago, and there certainly weren't clean technologies back then. I think part of the responsibility lies with the Western countries who currently have all the patents on clean technologies, mostly European companies. They should be made affordable for developing countries to take advantage of.
  22. All I'm saying is that if India and China reach the same levels of automobile ownership as the West, there will be 1 billion new cars. The number of cars in the world will triple. Unless new technologies are embraced (and this Tata doesn't appear to be a hybrid), that will wreck utter havoc on the Earth. I'm not making a judgment about who deserves to own a car, just stating a fact.

You got it! It was driving me crazy, knowing I'd heard this song before. Total ripoff. I'm appalled to say that the truly godawful Daddy DJ is still better than Basshunter.

No way, a friend of mine who is married started crying when we talked about the film long after he'd seen it. It really touches a nerve, I think. But it's genuine, not manipulative.
