~New Album Thread~
Just found this forum - I'm a huge natasha fan! I really really don't like that cover but the album sounds promising. While I really like Babies, I think it's definitely very British sounding and I'd think they'll pick a different lead single for the US. Considering she spent almost a year in the US doing solid promotion for Unwritten, I imagine she's going to spend much of the Spring/summer in the UK... my guess is a US release is a good 6 months away.

Great DJ site

Q Top 100 Singers of all time
A list on technical ability alone would be much more interesting. It would have to include the likes of Lisa Gerrard, Diamanda Galas.... Sarah Brightman...kidding

A Learner until you're 20 in the great driving test shake-up
My grandfather was such a ghastly driver and so stubbornly refused to give up his car, so my grandmother stole his license and to get a new one he had to take the test and naturally failed :D

Q Top 100 Singers of all time
I am excited to see her return to what appears to be a more mainstream pop album, though I just cannot get my head around the Celine Dion duet... their voices don't go together at all... maybe if Celine can restrain herself and Annie sings really loudly, she can keep up.

A Learner until you're 20 in the great driving test shake-up
In my state (Illinois), everyone age 74-86 must renew their license (requiring a visiual and on-road driving test) every 2 years, and anyone over 87 has to pass the test and renew their license each year. Also if you are over 74 and you are cited for an infraction, you have to pass the test to drive again.

Lack of respect in society
As such a flaming liberal, I always want to point to poverty, to a lack of education that leads women to have kids when they can't handle them, to the fact that mothers now have to work long hours to pay the cost of living... all leading to a viscious circle... kids born into poverty and dysfunctional or single-parent families and never having the opportunity to grow as a normal child, leading to them having kids and the process repeating. BUT... More and more I am starting to wonder if the collapse of ethics and morals among the youth in this country (and apparently the UK as well) is caused by something else. I'm starting to think maybe people are just become assholes and expecting more than they deserve and all of that. It's pathetic that a 22 year old (myself) or even a 15 year old (Conor) can look at a younger generation and shake my head. I mean yes, it happens with every generation but come ON, this is like a half generation and apparently the difference is huge. It makes me concerned for the future, honestly. And Conor, do you get misspelled "Connor" all the time by people too? I'm Conner :)

Migration fears to double BNP council seats
I think this is probably true and it should be every pluralist democrat's nightmare. The same thing happens in France every election when the digusting fascist LePen gets a third of the vote based solely on his virulent anti-immigration stance.

Wikipedia - how accurate is the online encyclopedia?
Agreed. The problem is it often says what people WANT to believe - how many records has Madonna sold now? 350 million??

Wikipedia - how accurate is the online encyclopedia?
Personally I think it's the single most important resource on the internet. I absolutely love how it's user-managed because every single person has SOME particular interest or knowledge, so everyone can add to it. I love how I can look up a particular wind turbine somewhere and find that someone with a special interest, expertise, and enthusiasm for wind turbines has offered all of their knowledge and it's at my fingertips. Wikipedia isn't always accurate and should NEVER be cited in an article, but it can play an important role in research. I used to look up an item, read about it on Wikipedia, and then check the sources at the bottom. It's a great way to begin research.

Fave artists from this list?
I like Rufus Wainright, Bright Eyes, and Aimee Mann. Go back and look at the "Heartbeats" thread to see what I think about Jose Gonzalez!

Isnt Hilary Duff too old for this kind of rubbish now?

Billboard Top 100 - 06/03/99
Believe would go on to #1 the next week and become the best selling single of 1999 (as it was for the UK in 1998)

Billboard Top 100 - 04/03/2000
Love these old charts!

Hilary Duff With Love and Dignity (New single and New album)
Unfortunately, her record company is refusing to release the song it iTunes <_< So it will likely creep in on airplay and then skyrocket up the chart when the song is finally released digitally. This will likely be the day her album is released (first week of April). Anyway, maybe it's better because in 3 weeks her airplay will be a lot higher and then she has a chance for a HUGE jump into the top 5.

Ex-Gay Therapist Thinks He Can "Cure" Homosexuals
Also I hope to god they never, EVER actually find the "gay gene" as such. The sooner they are able to find that, the sooner they will be able to remove it from the population...

Ex-Gay Therapist Thinks He Can "Cure" Homosexuals
It probably is a combination of nature vs. nurture (just like everything else), but the ratio is not going to be the same for everyone. I don't think I'm deluded in saying I was born gay. My father played a huge role in my upbringing, not simply devoting constant attention to me, but playing an almost stereotypically masculine “father†role, coaching me at soccer, taking me camping, even teaching me to shoot a gun. I have no repressed memories of sexual assault or anything, nor was I “subjected†to any overtly feminine force or anything like that. Some of my earliest childhood memories include feeling attraction (though I didn’t recognize it as such) to males, going back to age 5 or 6. I can say with almost certainty that I was born gay. No, they haven’t found a “gay†gene, but there is incredible evidence suggesting homosexuality has genetic roots for many. In a University of Minnesota study in the late 80’s, researchers interviewed over 500 pairs of twins separated at birth around the world. Among males, homosexuality was 100% congruent, meaning that every gay male had a twin who was gay. The study was so controversial, the researchers officially published something like 85% because they were afraid of the social problems it could cause. (Imagine if you’re a woman and your husband had a twin who was gay!) Many scientists believe homosexuality is completely justifiable evolutionarily, despite the fact that it seems to counter it. Several species of animals exhibit population-control behaviors when their numbers become too great. Think about it, the planet isn’t overpopulated yet, but the way in which humans congregate in dense cities and such, it would totally make sense for us to “feel†overpopulated and thus evolution tries to correct that. This would also explain why homosexuality seems to be more prevalent today (which isn’t to say it didn’t always exist, of course). It's different for everyone I'm sure, but I'm quite sure nature was more important than nurture in my development as a gay male...

MIMS, "This Is Why I'm Hot"
Awful, awful, awful, the lyrics are ridiculous and the production is straight out of 1999. I'm guessing its popularity is based more on novelty than anything else? The song is just soooo bad.

you most hated genres?..
I can't stand that early 60's...sort of "California" genre (if it can be described that way) comprising of the awful Beach Boys and about 500 ripoffs.
-
you most hated genres?..
See I think the only period at which country music was even LISTENABLE was the 70's - those cheesy hits still sound great today! Okay so Tammy Wynette was awful but Dolly and Linda Ronstadt and the adorable Kenny Rogers... it's a guilty pleasure of mine. The c**p that passes for "country" music these days is merely rock music with a whiney voice, southern accent and a steel guitar. That's why broadly popular artists like Shania Twain can have a country version, a pop version, and a dance version of each of her songs dominating 3 charts at one time (and in numerous countries at one time, but that's rare).

Who was the most undeserving of the Oscar?
I fell asleep during A Beautiful Mind. And since then I can't STAND Russell Crowe or Jennifer Connelly, that is no surprise. Did that win Best Picture, really?? Million Dollar Baby was boring as well to me. I wonder, though, is a film that bores me worse than one that offends me (ex: Crash)?

Who was the most undeserving of the Oscar?
I can't stand Wahlberg, but maybe it's because I remember too well the days when he used to drop trou singing awful hip/hop... I just can't take him seriously! Yes, Waters is amazing, though I do admit that some of his more obscure pics ("Woman Trouble" etc.) confuse me more than Serial Mom, which is AMAZING.

Who was the most undeserving of the Oscar?
I know I've ranted on this forum about it before, but I think last year's Best Picture win for Crash discredited the entire Academy severely. Every one of the other nominated films was superior. Crash was perfect for a self-absorbed, Los Angeles-based, PC, rich, Academically liberal film critic. Which is why audiences and critics in the rest of the US and the rest of the world largely ignored or panned the film. The Academy proved to be the bunch of self-congratulating snobs who appear once a year to embrace and award each other at the Oscars and then dissapear back to their Malibu compounds. Crash felt so fake, it felt totally designed for that Hollywood crowd, and they embraced it unsurprisingly. And people wonder why foreign and independent films have such a hard time during awards season...
