US iTunes Top 100 [NOV-APR 2011]
Also -- that Rolling in the Deep has risen to #2 doesn't overcome my disappointment that Someone Like You has fallen out of the top 30. The latter deserves to be a no. 1 SMASH here as it is the UK.

US iTunes Top 100 [NOV-APR 2011]
This thread kills me! JLO vs. Adele?? Seriously?? "Well I didn't start this war but it's on..." :) The biggest difference between Jennifer Lopez and Adele is that Jennifer Lopez can't, doesn't and won't sing. Ever. She has never gone on tour. She seems to be good at convincing people she can sing but in truth there is no evidence that she has actually ever done so. Meanwhile, Adele is without a doubt breathtaking. There is no contest.

US iTunes Top 100 [NOV-APR 2011]
"Throwin on my Louboutins" was possibly the WORST song of the past year (how do you throw on a shoe?), it was just HORRIBLE... so I must admit I did not expect much from JLo... but I am really liking On the Floor. Her flop after flop comebacks are over. She's earned this...

The first 1000 Billboard #1s
This is SUCH a great list... I'm glad Billboard found youtube videos for all of them! I could probably spend hours on that site...

'Born This Way' • 1st Single Thread
I've said this on the US iTunes forum... it is a travesty that Bad Romance was kept from #1 by Empire State of Mine (which was out of the iTunes top 5 by then but KILLING on airplay). But to be fair, the only reason Poker Face got #1 was because Flo Rida's single was inexplicably removed from iTunes for a day. I think Poker Face is the better #1. No US sales yet, just rumors of 450K+...

Least Likely To Reach The US Billboard Top 40 Singles
Didn't see this post till now! Kylie and Scissor Sisters have devoted fan bases (the gays); Robbie, Duffy and Ricky Martin have name recognition. That said, I honestly think Hello (Martin Solveig) is most likely to become a top 40 hit. Top 40 radio in America has an extremely limited playlist because most stations play the hell out of a handful of songs. This is why it is so difficult to get into the top 40 of the Hot 100. Any song that makes the chart at all, particularly for a new or unknown artist, is considered a huge achievement. I don't see Cheryl Cole having a hit, frankly. She's just too... British? By this I mean her style, her background, the whole pop culture context of her fame is just not here. She is one of those artists who would really have to "Americanize" herself and it's usually a shame when this happens. It also rarely works -- UK artists that find success in the US are generally not making a great effort to do so.

I guess Born This Way has been moved up to Friday? Not much to speculate about, except how quickly it will reach no. 1!

Protestors in Cairo
Sadly I think the US would much rather allow the army to fire on protesters than on Israel...

Protestors in Cairo
It's very early to tell... tomorrow's mass strike should reveal more clues about the future. My concern is the leadership vacuum right now -- if Mubarak resigns, who will take his place? I'm not convinced the Muslim Brotherhood would be an improvement, and virtually no other political institution exists. In a country that has been autocratic for decades and decades, there has been no way to build potential political leaders on an individual level. Sure, the youths are leading the riots today, but it won't be 21 year olds on Twitter vying for power tomorrow. It could be like Iran 1979 all over again -- the young liberals bring a revolution but aren't prepared or organized enough to take political leadership of the country. And then, of course, an autocratic, theocratic regime takes power. Or it could be like Iran 2009 when demonstrations are successfully quelled and all the momentum built just fizzles out. So basically, Iran is the case to avoid...

LEAST Favourite of 2007s best selling singles
Agreed, it's possibly the worst song either of them has ever done, just AWFUL, can't fathom how Bleeding Love was eliminated first.

US iTunes Top 100 [NOV-APR 2011]
In the early and mid 90s, Eurodance was very popular in the US, and was a staple on pop radio - in addition to those mentioned, all of the following had big hits: Snap, Real McCoy, Captain Hollywood Project, Corona, Robin S, Fun Factory, Black Box, 2unlimited, Haddaway, Culture Beat, DJ Miko, Livin Joy, Crystal Waters, No Mercy. From about 1998 on, you're right, only a few dance acts have been able to chart, mostly because until two years ago, pop radio almost never ever playlisted it. Still, a few acts managed to cross over, including Lasgo, DHT, DJ Sammy, ATC, DJ Encore, Gigi D'Agostino, Cascada, Alice Deejay, Vengaboys, Dirty Vegas, iiO. Today, American pop is so much influenced by Eurodance... even hip/hop acts, the latest Usher and Chris Brown songs are good examples. And radio is much more friendly, so it doesn't surprise me at all that Stereo Love is doing well. Oh, and the dance versions of DHT and DJ Sammy were the ones that got heavy airplay. In both cases the Candlelight versions brought new interest after they had peaked chart-wise, although sales of the Candlelight version of Listen to your Heart may have ended up exceeding those of the dance mix

new coldplay xmas single
Well I won't comment on my opinion of the song, however... It must be said that this is fast turning into a massive global hit. It's on every single iTunes top ten in the world (except Australia, strangely) right now... even Japan, where English-language tracks are rare...

2018 WORLD CUP WILL BE IN ENGLAND
Anywhere in Eastern Europe (save Belarus) is better than Russia in terms of political/social freedoms and human rights!! As for the Middle East, Turkey is the only one I can think of, or perhaps Lebanon. But you're right, it's all about money and politics. It will cost billions for both Russia and Qatar to prepare. When those sums of money are thrown around, the possibility for corruption is astronomical. The IOC hated the Beijing protests, they hated the Vancouver opposition... FIFA is saying they'd rather go to corrupt autocratic states than have to answer for their corruption. Well it's our right and we're not going to give it up so you can put on a show... goodbye, good riddance...

US Billboard Hot 100 - 12/11/2010
Yeah, what's interesting about US pop music right now actually isn't the lack of dance music. Not only are a few dance acts succeeding, but much of the pop and hip/hop music is clearly inspired by Eurodance. What's actually lacking in a big way right now is rock music. There is virtually no rock music on pop radio or the iTunes chart, save for a few MOR acts like Train. And the top selling one of those, Hey Soul Sister, is 14 months old!

2018 WORLD CUP WILL BE IN ENGLAND
The British Foreign Office guidance on traveling to Qatar: It is a punishable offence to drink alcohol or be drunk in public. Offenders may incur a prison sentence or deportation. Alcohol is, however, available at licensed hotel restaurants and bars, and expatriates living in Qatar can obtain alcohol on a permit system. You should not carry alcohol with you, including in your car (except to take it on the day of collection from the warehouse to your home). You should dress modestly when in public, including whilst driving. Women should cover their shoulders and avoid wearing short skirts. You should behave courteously at all times. Any intimacy in public between men and women (including between teenagers) can lead to arrest. Homosexual behaviour is illegal in Qatar. 2018 WORLD CUP WILL BE IN ENGLAND
Of course the media in Qatar and Russia will be supportive, they're controlled by the state and heavily censored! Losing the World Cup is a small price to pay for having a free media... The Olympics/World Cup is increasingly becoming a ostentatious event for the oligarchs and elites of (pseudo-)authoritarian countries to strut around. Let them have it, and the world's tallest skyscrapers, the 7-star hotels, and "world's most..." luxuries, etc. I rather enjoy my freedom of expression, participation, information, etc.

US iTunes Top 100 [NOV-APR 2011]
Amazing!! Next week either We R Who We R could return to #1 five weeks after it originally hit the top spot, or Firework may make it. If Firework hit #1, we'd have 6 different #1s in 6 weeks. Either of which would be hugely significant for the Hot 100 (infamous for 3 month runs at the top of the chart).
