The Feeling - as far as I know - hold the record for most weeks at a position between #11 and #75, when "Fill My Little World" was #16 for four weeks in a row in 2006. I think this prompted an entire thread on chc at the time? I think Jester had something to do with it? We put together a list of each position in descending order of songs which held that position for the most consecutive weeks, e.g. #34 - Bucks Fizz - "I Hear Talk" - 3 weeks - Jan 1985. Tina Turner's #40 was also there, but shared it with Holly And The Ivys' "Christmas On 45" - 3 weeks - Dec 1981/Jan 1982! It made for very interesting reading!

There were stacks of Cure singles in my HMV on Friday - rather too many really! Dave - you have an error in your 1989 singles chart - "I Won't Back Down" is listed as being by New Model Army instead of Tom Petty. Cheers as ever for a great thread!

Going back to the first post: it's a misconception that Arctic Monkeys have done well from downloads - they haven't. It's their physical sales which prop them up every time. "Brianstorm"'s performance on downloads was hugely underwhelming considering how massive an act they were/are, going #11-#11 before climbing to #2 upon physical release. Because they were lumped in with the MySpace phenomenon, people mistakenly believe they sell singles on downloads. Indie stuff is underperforming if it's not on the Radio 1 playlist, I agree. They think they're oh-so-cutting-edge playing Kooks, SFG, Hoosiers etc, but this is just pop really - and not very good pop either. Indie acts can get more of a chanceof breaking through now if their album does well - and the only way that's going to happen if Radio 1 haven't taken a shine to them is by getting glowing reviews in NME, Q, Mojo, Uncut etc. If they can chart in the Top 10 with their album then the word-of-mouth effect may well knock through to the singles chart... but this hasn't really happened yet... either that or I can't think of any examples. As usual, if you don't look outside the box for good music then you risk missing out on it. The Radio 1 playlist sucks!

The majority of potential buyers it has left probably still don't yet know who it's by, causing a knock-on effect of sales through the week. I think it has the mileage to stay at #1 all week (and then fall) - especially when the media pick up on it after the first midweek flash. How many viewers did the final get? 10 million? I can see 35,000 of those downloading it for sure.
