  7. It’s the pop-rock value of the summer: the co-headlining national tour featuring veteran rockers Counting Crows and pop-soul chart-toppers Maroon 5, with breakout star Sara Bareilles opening on select dates. Speaking at a press conference in Los Angeles, the group’s charismatic lead singers (and buddies) Adam Duritz and Adam Levine discussed tour plans and dished about the state of the music industry and the possibility of some surprise collaborations. Mr. Duritz, do you have advice for Mr. Levine on two important subjects: career longevity, and celebrity girlfriends? Adam Duritz: Mine were almost entirely fictional. I would advise for him to laugh it off when you read about someone that you’ve never met that’s supposed to be your girlfriend, because that will happen a thousand times. As far as career longevity, I think there’s two sides to it. One side is how you feel about yourself…make the records you want to make, and that will allow you to stay in a career that can be kind of trying at times. And the other half they’ve already got down, which is touring. I really believe that the impression you make on someone on the radio is very fleeting. But touring will give you career longevity. The impression you make on a given evening, when it’s you and them and you make a real connection with the audience—that can last forever. Is that why you think your records are still selling at a time when a lot of bands are having problems and the record industry is kind of in turmoil? What’s the secret? Adam Levine: I think our band was almost at the tail end of being in a culture of people that buy records. I can’t think of an actual regular old band that put an album out after us that was able to sell records. I think that has less to do with longevity and our band and our music and more to do with the cultural trend heading towards downloads. Adam, can you think of a band that’s broken since our band that’s been able to sell records? Duritz: I don’t read Billboard, so I have no idea what’s selling. Levine: Every week that we sell records I’m, like, I can’t even believe that we sold records. People don’t buy them anymore. I can’t believe that people go to a store in this day and age and purchase albums. Who are your favorite bands that you have toured with besides each other? Levine: We played one show with the Police. That doesn’t count as a tour, but they are probably my favorite band in the world. That was pretty awesome, and Sting was really nice and really cool. Duritz: For me, there’s just been a lot. We really made an effort throughout our career to tour with a lot of young bands. We brought out bands on the road that we liked and we got to see a lot of great music. But we would have no career without Cracker—they took us out [on tour] three or four different times. I don’t know about favorite, but Cracker is probably the most important band for us. Levine: As far as that, a band that first saw our potential—he’s not a band, he’s a solo artist—but John Mayer, I have to give him credit where credit is due. Because he took us out way before [we got big]. If you could each cover a song from the other’s band, what would it be? Duritz: I like the first song on the new album, “If I Never See Your Face Again.” I just like the funk of it. I’m looking forward to seeing it in the summer. Levine: I’m trying to think what I’d want to cover—“A Long December,” probably. Oh dude, I love that song so much it’s insane. Maybe, could I sing that one with you? Duritz: Yeah, you can sing it. Levine: Sweet! I’d love to do that. Do you think this all might lead to some official collaboration? Levine: Yeah, and I’ll tell you, I’m really excited about this tour because there are so many great singers and so many great musicians. I can guarantee that there will be some sort of collaboration. It’s gonna be fun. Duritz: We’re playing a version of “Borderline” by Madonna that we haven’t played in a while. It’s this great sort of Neil Young/Crazy Horse version of Madonna. I was just with Sara [bareilles] and we thought of getting together to do that one. And I know a few people have tried, but I still don’t think the quintessential “Hit Me Baby One More Time” has been done and I would love for the three of us to nail that out this summer. Levine: Travis did a good version of that, didn’t they? Duritz: I like Travis’ version, yeah, I do think it’s really good. I listened to it the other day and still think there’s room for [another]. I think it would be really fun to do an encore of just ridiculous pop. Not that they are ridiculous songs, but ridiculously cool songs and have all of us singing them and finding new ways to do them. I think that’d be a really fun encore. That would actually be worth the price of admission alone. Levine: Totally, that would be fun.
