  1. Don't you think he might have been doing something else? After all, he is the PM.
  2. Exactly. The Tory amendment would have delayed the provisions of the government Bill until after a new enquiry had reported. That is very likely to be after the next election, meaning that the legislation would have to start again. A new enquiry would also give the government a reason to delay implementing the recommendations of the enquiry that has already happened. Of course, that is not how the Daily Mail will report it.
  3. It is time to congratulate the Tories for reaching a new low. They are tabling an amendment to the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill. Among other things, the Bill provides greater protection for children who are home-schooled. This could have prevented the murder of Sara Sharif who was killed by her father after she was taken out of school. The Tories are proposing an amendment, calling for an enquiry into grooming gangs. The Tories, of course, have already had an enquiry. They said they would act on the recommendations, but failed to implement any of them. This is where the Tory move is beneath contempt. If the amendment is passed, it won't lead to an enquiry. That is because the whole Bill will fail, meaning that none of its provisions, including the enquiry, will be implemented. That means that Labour MPs will have to vote against the amendment to save the rest of the Bill. The Tories, of course, will then make political capital out of the vote, in the hope that the reasoning behind it will be ignored. Not surprisingly, Farage's mob will vote for the amendment. The Lib Dems are planning to abstain.
  4. Was the 3 in 10 on the sleb version on More 4 tonight the easiest ever?
  5. The sheer inconsistency (or dim-wittedness) of some of Starmer's critics is astounding. Some people are accusing him of lying about prosecuting some of the gangs "because the police prosecute". These are the same people who criticise him for not prosecuting Jimmy Savile. For people too young to remember, the police haven't prosecuted people since 1985 when it became the responsibility of the Crown Prosecution Service.
  6. Quite right. If the Tories now think that a national enquiry is long overdue, how overdue was it six months ago? It's good to see Ed Davey also criticising Musk. You haven't bothered to check the facts, have you? Starmer reopened investigations into grooming gangs when he was DPP. He led prosecutions of those gangs. How was that getting it wrong?
  7. It's the relatively brief appearance of a major historical figure that seems a bit weird. However, as Joseph suggested, perhaps it is just going to be a running gag.
  8. Could be!

  15. January The Daily Mail will reveal that Keir Starmer once left some bread under the grill for too long under the headline “Starmer is Toast”. March In the lead up to the local elections, Lib Dem leader Ed Davey visits the International Space Station. He announces that “Major Tim” Farron will be in charge of the local election campaign while he tries to get back to Earth. April Boris Johnson announces that he will be divorcing his latest wife. Laura Kuenssberg denies playing any part in this. May Farage’s fascists make substantial gains from the Tories in the local elections. Labour suffer modest losses to the Tories and Lib Dems. The Lib Dems win seats from the Tories. This is reported as a triumph for Farage and a disaster for Labour. The Lib Dems are not mentioned at all. June The first parliamentary byelection in a seat won by the Tories in July 2024. Boris Johnson is selected as the Tory candidate. He finishes seventh, behind a man dressed as a goldfish, a woman dressed as a cake and Jenniffer Arcuri. July The economy finally shows signs of significant growth. The Daily Mail reports that this is a triumph for the Tories’ handling of the economy. Some ministers attend an Oasis gig. Others don’t. The Daily Mail devotes several front pages to stories about how this reveals a major Labour split. The Daily Express claims that this is the first time any minister has attended any gig, ever. The BBC reports both these stories as news. August Liz Truss publishes her new book, How To Be Prime Minister, a rebuke to historian Anthony Seldon’s How Not To Be PM. After a book-signing tour, signed copies of the book sell for as much as 20p. Rare unsigned copies sell for £3. The publisher goes bankrupt, blaming Rachel Reeves. October In her first (and, possibly, last) leader’s speech to the Tory autumn conference Kemi Badenoch launches a blistering attack on snacks at lunchtime. The Daily Star reports the speech under the headline One Sandwich Short Of A Picnic. November Reform UK MP Lee Anderson decides that it is about time he changed parties again. After failing to find a party that will accept him, he forms one of his own with a membership fee of 30p. For another 30p, members will be able to attend the annual dinner, cooked by Anderson himself. December After a group of Labour and Tory MPs join the Lib Dems, Ed Davey becomes the Leader of the Opposition. He celebrates by abseiling from the top of the Palace of Westminster to Waterloo station. Broadcasters and the press continue to devote more time and spaces on reporting the antics of Farage and his parliamentary party, now reduced to three after Richard Tice follows Lee Anderson in launching his own party.

  17. Musk has also posted a surely libellous comment about Labour minister Jess Phillips and writte3n in support of the fascist Alternativ für Deutschland party.

It was interesting last night that statements, all of them respectful, from Biden, Trump and Clinton were released at the same time. That was clearly coordinated, presumably with discussions started before Carter's end.

James Earl Carter, arguably the USA's greatest former president (his actual presidency was less successful) has died aged 100.

  24. So the richest man in the world supports a policy that will make him even richer. The number of people surprised by this must be about the same as the number of people who think Liz Truss was the greatest PM ever.
  25. That bit seemed particularly odd as it came just two days after a colourised version of Patrick Troughton's last story was shown, the story that ended with the Doctor (soon to be Jon Pertwee) being exiled to Earth. He then spent a long time living from day to day. Of course, Moffatt may not have known that was coming when he wrote the episode, but the timing did rather emphasise the inconsistency.
