Hello Callum :) In a way, that says it all really in terms of how generally the public probably do perceive Darius though - most people that I speak to off the internet anyway, only seem to really mention PopStars, PopIdol and Colourblind in relation to Darius - they're often surprised to know he's actually done more. You can tell even from some of the comments posted on his MySpace site, that some people think the songs on there are new ones, so they've obviously not familiar with them - even people based in the UK! But, having said that, I think that might be true for artists in general, if they're not on TV; Radio or front pages of Magazines they disappear from public consciousness. It's only really fans or people who have a real interest in a particular artist, that generally go to the trouble of finding out what they are actually doing. Think that about sums it up; apart from recently building his own recording studio :cheer: and campaigning for the environment :D

They don't appear as nil to me and they've increased since I last looked when I saw a similar post on .net earlier - it looks fine to me.

the cheek of it
It could well have been a PR feed that's how it all seems to work these days. I have nothing against postitive media for Will - but why must there always be comparisons to give the public negative impression of other artists, that's bad enough as it is, but downright lies is something else entirely :( Any self-respecting journalist really should check out the facts before submitting an article for publication though, but they are few and far between and like with every other area the media's misleading manipulation is rife :( I really think that even though the article has come out and done it's job so to speak, the journalist and newspaper should get a rebutal about it though ... it wont change anything, but at least it tells them that not everyone buys into their spin

Maybe it's how he likes it ;) :D :P

I shouldn't worry Baytree - I can't imagine the reporter would bother to trawl the internet looking for those kinds of individual threads if they can't even be bothered to look at Darius's Music section/catalogue on a website that's actually dedicated to him. It's obvious whoever wrote it has done no Darius research whatsoever, or chosen to deliberately ignore it  - who did write it anyway, does it say? - Is it hosted online anywhere?

Thanks Baytree, I'm glad it's in I don't actually remember Darius and Gareth doing it - not sure if I would have it on tape or not then, but I'm not even sure where those old tapes are anyway at the moment  I'm not terribly keen on Darius doing the jazz-swing covers myself really, he seems sometimes to take on a sort of Americanised accent which I find off putting, it just feels unnatural to me - 'cos he doesn't seem to sound the same way, when he sings his own song Devil in You; and I felt he sounded more natural more of the time, when singing Smile too. I wonder if maybe he takes on the spirit of whoever the old standards were sung by with some ~ I don't know :D So, the first half of the Maidstone set appeals to me more and my list would be different if it wasn't just restricted to the cover versions :) - but, here's my ranking of these ones then: More Than Words - 14  (Baby Can I hold You - would be here, if it hadn't been in the Dive In era one  ) Cannonball - 13 Smile - 12 Father & Son - 11 Then really there's sort of a bigger gap here for me onto: Making Whoopie - 10 Fever - 9 Moondance - 8 Fly Me to the Moon - 7 The Lady is a Tramp - 6 I'm struggling to order the rest, but anyway: Come Fly with Me - 5 You Make Me Feel So Young - 4 Girl from Ipanema - 3 I Get a Kick Out of You - 2 Call Me Irresponsible - 1

Already included where? - My favourite is More Than Words - so, I'm waiting to see whether it has been left off by accident, or intentionally.

Post your favourite picture of Darius
Yes, he does have that quality about him, I suppose that's where the Cult Leader references came from in part too together with the visuals taken from his farewell song on PopStars, then there was SisterMother, the other sisters and the disciples :D and the part offer in Whistle Down the Wind too ~ it's charisma :) I can't take to that particular Chicago picture though, everytime I look at it I think of Stingray :D

Paolo Nutini
 I'm definitely not in tune with that writer then :D Yes, I take your point, though there were plenty of artists/threads in the then, 'singer-songwriter' forum, that I hadn't heard of - I find those interesting myself, but probably wouldn't notice them if they were tucked away in a catch all thread. As for Paolo Nutini, I felt it wouldn't be long until he hit the mainstream anyway. I was only joking about the 'being ignored', it doesn't trouble me to talk to myself ;) :D

Personally, I've always felt that Darius was holding himself back a lot on PopIdol, that perhaps the experience of the editing and media backlash from Popstars, made him apprehensive sometimes and maybe a bit too self-aware/self-conscious during PopIdol, some people have said to me however, that he was 'playing the game' and I think there might be some truth in that too, though I saw him as being genuinely worried/apprehensive/surprised/delighted at times myself I think. But I never had any problems with the Darius I saw during the PopStars series anyway, the things that were seized upon in a negative way, I saw myself to be positive qualities, without which, I don't think Darius would have come through that negative experience and gone on to achieve what he has. I do agree though that to a large extent our impressions of anything are manipulated by the media, and maybe also, how we interpret or see something says more about us ourselves, than it does about what we're seeing - which accounts for why people have different opinions and see things differently anyway in respect to Darius or anything else. But really, when I mentioned that I'm not sure whether Darius's chameleonic diversity was a good thing or not, I was speaking in terms of music, the covers he does and the ability he has to "mimic", not his personality. Neither was I meaning that Darius should be limited to one single genre or style of music either. This is exactly the sort of thing that I was meaning:

Cover versions
I found them all (the ones that aren't on CDs) on Sonnet's site somewhere or other I think, though it was a while ago and I don't know whether everything is on the new site yet - but it's worth checking through, if it will help you to hear them again.

Artists Forums League
I think this forum would fair worse if views weren't counted, judging by the figures for that recent overall league table that was done. I'm not keen on it just being about number of posts, because the downside to that is people posting drivel for the sake of boosting the post count. Views demonstrate an overall interest in the forum I think - I like lots of views :D Having said that, it doesn't really bother me where this forum is in the league tables, so long as there continues to be no threat to whichever forums are at the bottom.

Only You - live video on MySpace
Well Greg posted "maybe see you at a future Darius gig" or something like that on MySpace and Karl said he misses Darius - so I think you're both right :) - I guess it all depends what Darius does next musically too though, what kinds of accompanyment he will need and as you say, availabilities of whoever, coinciding. I remember, that I did believe that when Darius first put the band together, they would be together forever, but I thought many things that have turned out differently  :)

Darius himself/the person may well be nice and genuine, but his public persona is one that has changed quite a lot in a short space of time and I think that may have given rise to the feelings of uncertainty some people have about him. Even going back to the Darius on PopStars and PopIdol, the two public personas seemed characteristically and visually different, people said to me back then, they felt he was "fake", so, perhaps that set the precedent for it. But in addition to that and what I was really talking about here, was musically - he does tend to adopt different vocal/singing styles for different types of music and "mimic" as you put it, which some people have said they find insincere in a music sense, rather than a personality sense - i.e. who is Darius musically speaking?

I'm not a straight covers fan generally really, there needs to be a personal message and/or reason why the artist has chosen to sing perform a cover of a particular song; or they need to bring something completely new to it for me to feel it's worth buying into anyway. I have mixed feelings about Darius's chameleonic diversity myself - on the one hand it displays a versatile talent which I suppose is good if you want to adapt yourself to different things, but on the other I think it can convey insincerity in his work/what he's about judging by some of the comments people have made to me about Darius being "fake" - i.e. WHO IS HE"??? :D ... So, I'm not sure, in a music sense, whether it's good for him to mimic and dip in and out of such different styles so readily really. But anyway, back to the covers - have you had a look to see if the set list from Maidstone was posted on .net? I know Meg (and others) posted it on Divas at the time, so I imagine it was posted on there too. The spoof covers are sort of better than just covers in a way to me, because the lyrics are unique
