It's been on a bit earlier for several years now. Surely if they wanted to get rid of it they just would. I think BBC Music department are still quite protective of the brand and like the idea of keeping it on life support. Whether anyone will ever be brave enough to bring it back on a more regular basis who knows. Still think it could work in a Saturday early evening slot and maybe not every week all year round, and with a not-so-tied-to-the-top-40 format.

Yeah they've been doing that filming in sessions thing for years now. Guess it makes it easier to book the acts and then just edit them in the order they want.

To be fair, it has got to be a lot more difficult to book acts for this than back in the day, for so many reasons - not least the slow-down in the chart and fewer acts really breaking through. Though Ed would usually do it, and I'm sure Maneskin would've jumped at the chance. At least some of the bigger acts will be represented in other footage though - and watching this with my family before Christmas lunch is such a lovely annual ritual that at this point I'm just pleased it's still going at all.

Well the way you put it, including the use of the smilie, was dismissive and rude.

That's the problem though, there's more than one way of measuring popularity, and the chart now is no longer "pure", in that it mixes different data together with a load of rules. Of course, arguably that had to be done given the way we listen to music now, but it's perfectly reasonable to argue that the way it's currently done could be changed.

Who says the chart should reflect consumption, when historically it didn't? And arguably considering all the rules applied to the chart, including mixing streaming with sales, it doesn't anyway. The only one that does is the pure streaming chart.

Actually, my reason for wanting a change has absolutely nothing to do with whether it makes the chart more "interesting". I don't believe the charts are there for the entertainment of chart geeks. They're there to benefit the wider music industry.

That's a rather unfair thing to say. Both sides have perfectly valid points.

I think you could just do it based on data. E.g. any song older than 3 years that has an X% increase in plays at Christmas is a Christmas song, so would include stuff like Stay Another Day, 2 Become 1 etc.
