Of course CD gifting is far less popular than it was, but it's not over. And Adele isn't just an "exception", it proves that there are casual listeners out there who still listen to CDs. Not everyone uses streaming services. If people had completely stopped buying CDs as Christmas presents, the physical market wouldn't have been 834,833 last week that's for sure.
  4. Is (Ella) Rothwell doing anything? She was on Walk The Line last night with a previous single

It's a different title with different lyrics so they surely will be separate

It's been on a bit earlier for several years now. Surely if they wanted to get rid of it they just would. I think BBC Music department are still quite protective of the brand and like the idea of keeping it on life support. Whether anyone will ever be brave enough to bring it back on a more regular basis who knows. Still think it could work in a Saturday early evening slot and maybe not every week all year round, and with a not-so-tied-to-the-top-40 format.

Yeah they've been doing that filming in sessions thing for years now. Guess it makes it easier to book the acts and then just edit them in the order they want.

I guess it might be the other way round on some of the other streaming services - or if not they've got multiple versions so that confuses the issue when just looking at online charts

Yeah it's since Jeff Smith came in a few years back. They've deliberately targeted 35-54 audience. Interesting interview with him here: https://www.musicweek.com/media/read/radio-...-station/075135

To be fair, it has got to be a lot more difficult to book acts for this than back in the day, for so many reasons - not least the slow-down in the chart and fewer acts really breaking through. Though Ed would usually do it, and I'm sure Maneskin would've jumped at the chance. At least some of the bigger acts will be represented in other footage though - and watching this with my family before Christmas lunch is such a lovely annual ritual that at this point I'm just pleased it's still going at all.
  12. Jack Savoretti - The Way You Say Goodbye (Ash Howes Radio Mix) is out tomorrow

Streaming is great but don't forget there are millions of people who are just more casual in their music listening. The ones who listen to Radio 2 in the k*tchen or pop an Adele CD in the car and listen to that over and over again. They just buy the occasional CD when they fancy it. They don't want or need to pay £120 a year subscription. Not everyone listens to music through a computer or phone.
  15. Darin - What's Christmas Anyway - single out this Friday 26th

  19. Well the way you put it, including the use of the smilie, was dismissive and rude.
  20. That's the problem though, there's more than one way of measuring popularity, and the chart now is no longer "pure", in that it mixes different data together with a load of rules. Of course, arguably that had to be done given the way we listen to music now, but it's perfectly reasonable to argue that the way it's currently done could be changed.
  21. Who says the chart should reflect consumption, when historically it didn't? And arguably considering all the rules applied to the chart, including mixing streaming with sales, it doesn't anyway. The only one that does is the pure streaming chart.
  22. Actually, my reason for wanting a change has absolutely nothing to do with whether it makes the chart more "interesting". I don't believe the charts are there for the entertainment of chart geeks. They're there to benefit the wider music industry.
  23. That's a rather unfair thing to say. Both sides have perfectly valid points.

I don't know.. I find the idea that she would be happy to cheat her fans equally difficult to believe. Well, maybe not Taylor. ^_^ I like to think most people would say no though.

If you've got a load of CDs or prints lined up, you can actually do about 30 autographs a minute (I tried it myself for fun!). So a few thousand is relatively easy. 30,000 would take 16 hours though. I guess 2 hours a day for a week would do it... though it is surprising that megastars that sell well anyway feel the need to bother. On the other hand, the more you do, the bigger the impact. It's not worth Ed Sheeran doing 1000 signed CDs when he'll sell those anyway. But 30,000 is the difference between another week at number 1 I guess.
