Songs missing from streaming services
All this makes me thankful for my iTunes library. But at the same time, I don't understand why people get so worked up about particular missing songs, when surely all you need to do is make a little bit of effort track down an MP3 or CD and add it as a local file? Apart from meaning you have to find space for the file on your phone (which you don't even need to do with Apple Music at least), or not being able to share it on a public playlist, I don't really get the big fuss. Someone explain what I'm missing?

The Official Charts website is horrid
Yeah it's quite clunky and buggy for searching for old charts. And ugly.

Will any artist ever debut at number 1 in the singles chart again?
I said it was a contributing factor.

Will any artist ever debut at number 1 in the singles chart again?
I disagree that it was pointless. Yes, surefire hits more often than not find their way up the chart, and of course streaming has changed the market completely. There's absolutely no going back now. But holding back singles gave the opportunity to many more singles, especially by new artists, to make the charts. There was a dramatic decline in the number of singles making the top 40 when OAOS came in. The only good thing about it is that a single isn't necessarily completely written off if it fails to chart in week 1 - but the tradeoff is that it's one of the contributing factors to the chart being as slow as it is.

In fact, at the time, anything below 75 was not considered canon, at least by Music Week. The positions 76-100 from the compressed top 200 that are on the OCC website now weren't even published at the time.

Whigfield counts though because she didn't make top 75 with that import version.

I always say forever is a long time. It'll continue to be rare but sure, someone will do it again one day.

Streaming Services Chart Discussion; W/C 04/04/25
Ed's trick with the physicals is that it has an exclusive B-side so that might tempt people. Officially out on the 30th for now. Also I've been seeing the snippet popping up on TikTok a lot the last couple of weeks. I feel like I already know it and am only about to press play on the full version. There is a remix coming out in a couple weeks too, sounds like it might be featuring Arash.

Top 100 chart criteria during the noughties
Will was actually supposed to duet on Suspicious Minds but he refused. I don't suppose Simon Cowell was worried about it looking weird from a chart point of view so wouldn't have demoted it on that basis.

Top 100 chart criteria during the noughties
I think that's always been a thing, mostly used by independent labels for new artists. One more high profile one I remember buying was when Shola Ama and The Divine Comedy released a special tribute single to the music of Noel Coward. That made the top 30.

Top 100 chart criteria during the noughties
You were still only allowed 3 songs on a single in the 2000s, though you could have 40 minutes of remixes again from some time in 2001. More obscure stuff was probably more likely to chart in the physical era because there were finite amounts of each single available. The sales threshold to chart was quite low in the last years of it. It's not that difficult to see why an underground club record might sell a few hundred copies on 12" and make it to #97.
