Or perhaps.. when a YouTuber used her song on an unofficial video and YouTube picks it up.. perhaps they differentiate between official video streams and when a song is used in the background of a user video?

OK. Do we know if lyric videos and static videos count towards that? Just thinking the chart rules contradict your theory on there being free Amazon streams. Confusing!

Surely the ad-funded streams were from the YouTube video?

Has anyone got a list of the current Amazon chart? If all the songs above Jess are on ACR then it's the equivalent of being #1 isn't it? What number is Justin? And you have to be careful comparing different weeks, particularly early on, with data missing. And if numbers are up significantly, then Jess might have done more streams to get to #7 on Amazon this week than Little Mix did when they got to #1. We don't have all the pieces of the puzzle.

Dua Lipa, Mabel, Lewis Capaldi, Billie Eilish, Tom Walker, Dermot Kennedy.. all longlisted in recent years and none made the top 5. And all more successful than any recent winners.

But they were on ACR and Ellie wasn't, so Ellie didn't need to be the first song on the playlist to get to #1 on OCC. IIRC she was usually in the first 5 songs or so? Also worth pointing out that Amazon streams are subscription streams so worth more than free Spotify streams for instance. Not sure about the Bieber thing, except maybe it's something to do with the time period the Amazon chart covers? I really doubt Amazon would falsify data to get one of their own songs to #1. And the idea that Mariah deserves number 1 despite all the help she gets from playlists but when someone else gets there it's corrupt..
  7. Let it have its moment to shut everyone up AND THEN CHANGE THE RULES..

If it was anyone other than Mariah that was the top Christmas song every year, people would be calling for a change in the rules. People complained about Ellie Goulding being #1 last year thanks to Alexa, but Mariah similarly benefits from "passive" playlist plays. Yes, it's undoubtedly genuinely the most popular Christmas song, but it still has an unfair advantage over everything else. All Christmas songs have an unfair advantage just due to the fact Christmas exists and comes round every year. And we don't need the chart to tell us that people listen to Christmas songs at Christmas. The whole point of it is a promotional tool for the music industry - and now it's useless for a few weeks of the year.
  9. I'm confused.. One Voice Children's Choir is American and Memories has been out ages already. Why is it #1?
  10. It was more muted than in 2007, but it was probably helped by the BBC pre-empting any potential furore.
  11. Because as soon as the Daily Mail noticed they would have been forced to issue a statement anyway

They don't usually even do a countdown.. just play the number 1 video at the end of the show

Unless they've already asked someone else.. would be a bit rude to unask them. Perhaps 3 of them could do it..

It's only 5 minutes before 12! And it has been earlier than this so it's not too bad.. and less likely to clash with Christmas dinner :D They might be able to announce the Christmas number one - they did so in 1994 and 2005.

It'd be a bit of a wasted opportunity if they didn't

I think they've just quoted the original version of the BBC News online article.

    Good news

No sign of it in the BBC press release. Guess it's not on :(
  19. Just noticed that Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" - at #100 this week - is 3 weeks away from matching Frank Sinatra's record of 124 weeks in the top 75!
  20. Wouldn't that be a rather hollow victory, then?

Let's try to guess who'll be on.. guess it would be mostly British acts? Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now Little Mix - Sweet Melody Joel Corry & MNEK - Head & Heart Wes Nelson - See Nobody KSI & Craig David - Really Love Jax Jones - I Miss U Dermot Kennedy - Giants Clean Bandit - Tick Tock Sigala & James Arthur - Lasting Lover Headie One & AJ Tracey - Ain't It Different Gary Barlow - Elita Steps - Something In Your Eyes Becky Hill - Forever Young Something like that I expect!

I share your fears, but if we didn't find out until the 26th last year, there's still hope. Generally it's only confirmed in the annual "here's what's coming this Christmas on the BBC" from the press office - and we've not had that yet. In fact, it's been the Tuesday of that week going back the last 3 years at least.. so perhaps next Tuesday will be the day we'll get confirmation
