Year-End Charts 2015
The Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) annual summary for 2015 has also been published. ERA are the trade body for retailers (in the same way the the BPI are the trade body for record companies). '25' by Adele tops the Top 20 listing, which includes not only music releases but also video and games titles. As is usual with the end of year ERA summary, physical sales of music titles are upweighted by 5% to account for / to estimate sales which have taken place outside of "Defined Universe Sales", the OCC quoted sales figure which is calculated from all retailers that provide sales data to the OCC so the figure given by ERA for '25' is 2,604,850. http://www.eraltd.org/news/era-news/entert...bn-barrier.aspx

Year-End Charts 2015
I'd forgotten about 'Happy'. I've just checked - 'Happy' moved to the top of the YTD listings on 19 January 2014, the third chart of 2014 ('Timber' by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha was top for the first two weeks) and remained at the top for the rest of the year.

Year-End Charts 2015
Possibly never. Or possibly 1977. 'Don't Give Up On us' by David Soul was number 1 on 1977 sales from the very first day of the year until the end of year chart was compiled. However, two points to note: 1. I don't think the then chart compiler BMRB compiled weekly "year to date" charts, they merely just compiled an end of year chart. 2. The end of year chart had a sales cut-off point of 10 December 1977. The BPI / BMRB later compiled a second "year end chart" for statistical purposes which included sales to the end of the year (minus one week over Christmas where no sales were collected) and the number 1 was 'Mull Of Kintyre' by Wings. However, officially David Soul still seems to be classed as having the top selling single of 1977. Other than the above, I don't think it has ever happened until 2015.

Last chart of 2015...
Yup, and #83 should be 'Bad Blood', #82 'Heartbeat Song' and #81 'All Of Me'. The Year To date chart that will be published in UKChartsPlus on Tuesday (which is always a Top 100) will include all sales to 31 December 2015 so that will effectively be the end of year chart. But I'd expect the OCC to have published at least a top 40 by then. And the BPI usually publish a quick sales overview on 1 or 2 January of each year, or at least they have for the last 5 years or so.

Last chart of 2015...
I've just checked and that looks like the Year To Date chart to week ending 10 December (chart announcement date 4 December). Just to check - was #91 Elle Goulding, #90 Usher featuring Juicy J and #89 Birdy? If so it's definitely that YTD chart and so will be missing 4 weeks worth of sales.

When will Justin Biebers relevance end?
But he's already been around for almost 6 years but just seems to be peaking now. It looked like his time was up in 2013 but he's come back stronger than ever.

When will Justin Biebers relevance end?
I was going to post that if streaming had been as popular / included in the charts in 2010 and 2011 then Rihanna would probably have dominated the charts like Justin Bieber is now doing. Similarly Lady GaGa would have probably done so in 2009 / early 2010. Unfortunately streaming means that the likelihood of one or two acts completely dominating the charts is now more likely, especially as download sales are collapsing fast mainly because younger people are choosing to stream instead. I expect that by this time next year many popular acts (like the Bieber's of this world) will be reaching number 1 on a regular basis with download sales below 20,000 while streaming sales will be getting closer to 100,000 for the big hits, especially if the charts, as seems a high probability, start to include audio streaming data from the likes of YouTube and Vevo.

Favourite Christmas Chart Moments
As Steve has mentioned, Bob The Builder beating Westlife to the Christmas number 1 in 2000. The chart forum at Dotmusic went into meltdown when that happened! Edit: it was BillyH and Xmas Tree Boy that mentioned Bob The Builder, apologies for that!

Who will be have the Y/E #1 album?
Adele (it seems to be a cert that '25' will be released next month). Possibly with sales of over 1.5m - my initial thought was 2.1m but that's probably way too high...

2015 BPI Certifications
Total sales for 'Sweet Home Alabama' by Lynyrd Skynyrd are now in excess of 700,000. It sold over 300,000 copies as part of the Free Bird EP, which is an enormous sale for a record that peaked at number 21. Initially 'Sweet Home Alabama' was the main listed side when it first charted in 1976 but when it recharted in both 1979 and 1982 the name of the EP was listed as the title. Alan Jones reported in Record Mirror in 1989 that the EP had sold over 300,000 copies. It has now sold a further 400,000 copies in its own right with a peak of number 44.

2015 BPI Certifications
The Compilations sector part of the market has continued to increase its sales year on year. To last Thursday over 13 million compilation albums have been sold this year which is a 1.6% increase to this point last year. This accounts for 27.5% of all albums sold this year. Artist albums have declined in sales by 10.6% this year.

The Most Timeless Songs of All Time
'Get Lucky' is still in the lower reaches of the Airplay chart (at number 165 on its 123rd week on the larger Top 200 list) but while it was played 835 times last week its audience was only just over 5 million which suggests it is mainly getting plays on smaller stations with low listening figures.

Sony revives On Air On Sale?
In the World In Action programme, 'Bang Bang' is one of the records mentioned as having been hyped into the charts.

Sony revives On Air On Sale?
The boss of Warner (John Fruin) was also in charge of the BPI when the World In Action programme on chart rigging was broadcast - he had to resign because of what was revealed (rather than being appointed after the programme had been broadcast!). The World In Action expose on chart rigging - broadcast on ITV on Monday 18 August 1980 - is available to watch on YouTube. For those who haven't seen it, the programme is a fascinating look at the music industry and especially how the charts were compiled back in 1980. The programme is half an hour long but it's worth watching as a wonderful examination of how things worked back then.

Official Chart Show to move to Fridays from summer 2015
That was when the chart reveal day switched from a Tuesday to a Sunday but the chart show on a Sunday goes back much further than that. The first proper Sunday chart show (Pick Of The Pops) was broadcast on the BBC Light Programme (which became Radio 2 in 1967) on 7 January 1962. POTP had previously been broadcast on a Saturday since 29 March 1958. POTP moved to 5pm to 7pm on Sundays on Radio 1 on 1 October 1967 which was the second day that the station was on air. On 24 September 1972 POTP ended and the chart show was rebranded from the following Sunday. From 1 October 1972 to 5 November 1978 the chart show was a top 20 broadcast at 6pm to 7pm, this extended to a Top 40 on 12 November 1978, broadcast for many years at 5pm to 7pm.

BPI's Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards to include streaming
That's correct, 4 January. I automatically thought of 1 January because of it being the start of the year.

BPI's Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards to include streaming
Streams since January 1 will count.

Apple to launch streaming service (June 8)
It's possible that Apple Music will only be available in the US at first. If that is the case then I expect it will be available in the UK sooner rather than later. Certainly I would expect Apple Music to launch in the UK in time for the Global Release Day initiative and the subsequent changes to the chart sales week and chart publication day. This will be the service that will bring streaming to the masses. There are substantially more people in the UK who have iTunes accounts than have, for example, Spotify accounts. I did read a few months ago that Apple were hoping to launch in the UK at a price below other streaming services, possibly £7.99 a month, but I doubt this will now happen. I have also read elsewhere that iTunes will be discontinued with all music related services moving over to Apple Music. The Apple Music streaming service will hasten the decline in permanent download sales and this will have a massive effect on the charts.

BPI's Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards to include streaming
BPI's Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards to include streaming data for albums by Tom Pakinkis The BPI's Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards Programme is to include audio streaming data in its album certifications from this week. The first albums benefiting from the incorporation of streaming will be announced via the BPI’s regular Twitter update this weekend. Singles certifications in the UK have included streaming plays since July 2014 and this move brings albums in line. The BPI Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards Programme will adopt the same approach and criteria that the Official Charts are using to calculate how streams contribute to an album’s sales performance. To reflect the difference in weight between streaming and purchasing, the Programme will utilise Official Charts Company data, which takes the 12 most-streamed tracks from the standard version of an album, with the top two songs down-weighted in line with the average of the rest. The total of these streams will be divided by 1,000 and added to the physical and digital sales of the album (the 1,000 ratio representing 100 streams as an equivalent for one track, and 10 tracks for one album). The inclusion of this new data has been backdated to the beginning of 2015, resulting in a higher than usual number of titles this week receiving new or upgraded certifications, including albums by artists such as Nicki Minaj, Placebo and Fall Out Boy. © Music Week

One Year Wonders
Some acts from the 1980s... Kajagoogoo - absolutely massive for a while in 1983 but then lost momentum when Limahl left the group / was sacked. Had little success after 1983. King - had a massive hit to start off 1985 and then two further top 20 hits and another top 30 hit during the year. One smallish hit in January 1986 and they were finished. Doctor & The Medics - I'm not sure if they should be included (many people probably think of them as a one hit wonder) but for a time in 1986 they were everywhere - on children's Saturday morning TV, on Top Of The Pops and on top of the charts. But they only had one top 20 single (admittedly a number 1) and one further top 30 hit plus a top 75 entry that failed to make the top 40. Their last chart entry fell from the top 75 the week before Christmas 1986 and then they were gone forever. Tiffany - had a very successful 1988 but come 1989 found the hits hard to come by and had just one further (and minor) chart hit.

One Year Wonders
t.a.T.u grabbed all the headlines (and a number 1) in 2003. They returned in late 2005 with a short lived top 10 hit and one further top 75 entry in 2006 but by then the hype had faded.
-
One Year Wonders
Sonique was massive in 2000 with 3 top 10 hits including a number 1. Her return in 2003 wasn't as successful with one top 20 hit and another minor chart entry and that was it.

2015 BPI Certifications
It's sales were 340,850 in 2001 (it was the 21st best seller of the year) so the track has been selling a decent amount each year since download sales were first counted for certification purposes in November 2004, plus it will have had a few streaming sales in the past year.
