#19 5,6,7,8 (6.40) • Director: Phil Griffin • Location: Marbella • Released: November 1997 • YouTube views: 41.091.000 Next we have the video that started their career..5,6,7,8! With the slightest difference (0.02 points) it grabbed the #19 spot in this countdown. Set primarily on a beach, the video opens with Lee and H riding quad bikes while the girls drive a car on the road next to them. It is followed by a repetition of the chorus whereby all of the members perform a line dancing routine, which was very popular at the time of its release. Lee, with H walking slightly behind him from the beach to the bar, performs the first verse where the chorus and dance routine is once again repeated. The second verse features clips of Lee singing while playing a game of snooker while H plays on the table football. For the final chorus, the group perform the dance routine for a final time, however the setting has changed to night time and inside a different bar. Not a big surprise for me. It’s definitely not a bad video for a debut single and it did kick of their career! The highlight? Lee shirtless and the band looking like puppies. The video received scores between a 5 and a 7 so it ends with a not too shabby total score.

#20 Here and now (6.38) • Directors: Terence O'Connor and Marek Losey • Location: London • Released: May 2001 • YouTube views: 2.843.000 Starting the top 20 is the video for Here and now. We seem to enjoy this one a bit more then it’s double A partner You’ll be sorry (as it finish inside the top 20 and it’s average score is 0.75 points higher). In the video Steps get trapped in a hedge maze. They search and try to find the centre, leaving trails of flowers everywhere they touch. The end of the video links into the video for You'll Be Sorry. It’s interesting to see this one a bit higher then You’ll be sorry. For me both videos don’t differ that much. Cute, but a bit dated with the graphics that were used back then. I guess this one feels a bit ‘warmer’? Here and now votes were also devising as it received scores between a two and a ten.

No big surprises for me either. Just wished Heartbeat was a little bit higher. #20 is on it’s way. Any predictions?

#21 Dancing with a broken heart (6.00) • Director: Charles Henri Belleville • Location: ? • Released: 9 Oktober 2017 • YouTube views: 1.100.000 Just missing out on a top 20 spot is Dancing with a broken heart. There isn’t much information to be found about this video either. The song, originally sung by Delta Goodrem, would be released as the lead single from the reissue of Tears on the dancefloor. It's noted for its similarities to their 2000 single Deeper Shade of Blue, with its official music video again showing a darker side to the band. In the video itself Steps are in a post-apocalyptic world. Their future version arrive at an abandoned warehouse in the desert to put on an unforgettable pop concert just one more time. Finally we are in the positive numbers with this video! I actually don’t mind it and it seems they got more budget for this one. There’s only one thing that’s really bugging me..their makeup and styling! Especially Faye and Claire look a hot mess imo..other then that the video received votes between a 5 and an 8.

I want to like it but not impressed this far..

I Surrender vs Summer Night City
Not a big fan of either but between the two I prefer I surrender.

#22 You’ll be sorry (5.56) • Directors: Terence O'Connor and Marek Losey • Location: London • Released: May 2001 • YouTube views: 1.342.000 Next we have the video for You’ll be sorry landing at #22. This with the slightest difference this far, 0,03! The video follows on from Here And Now. On board a spaceship, Steps gaze out across the stars and dance. A competition was held through the official Steps website for fans to be filmed and appear in the video. cmThe 30-some competition winners were filmed dancing around the centre stage whilst Steps performed their dance routine to the chorus of the song. However, none of the footage made it to the final cut, disappointing the competition winners. In May 2022, the raw footage was released on Steps' official YouTube channel showing the footage of the competition winners officially for the first time in 21 years. Co-director Marek Losey explained in an interview that the it was ultimately not included due to time pressure. There was to have been additional footage of the fans entering the video set, but it was not shot First..poor fans! Second, You’ll be sorry seems to be less appreciated as a video too (compared to Here and now). And, we are still not in the positive numbers. I can see why though. The graphics are very dated and the whole vibe looks less warm then it’s double A partner. The scores for this video ended between a 2 and 7.

#23 Better best forgotten (5.60) • Director: David Amphlett • Location: Park Royal studios • Released: March 1999 • YouTube views: 2.779.000 Next we have the video for Better best forgotten. It ends at #23 in this countdown with another small difference from the previous video. The video itself has a watery-theme and the group wear blue outfits. Group members Lee and H play with water pistols and interfere with the girls' singing. During the video shoot a glass wall collapsed on Faye. Luckily she escaped without major injury. This song was the last release of their debut album. What can I say? I Love the song and I’m happy it became a big succes! The video? It’s giving me very ‘meh’…there’s no concept and the dynamic between the boys seems forced. This is another video were Faye looks gorgeous though (and I’m happy nothing severe happened to her during the shoot) The votes were very polarizing for this one as it received a 1 and a 10!
