He has been a member of Boys of the Lough, Five Hand Reel and founded and produced the short-lived but quite extraordinary ensemble Clan Alba. Well known for his forthright and long-held political views, the legendary Dick Gaughan just doesn’t do gigs which are ‘ordinary’. An Evening with Tom Russell 3rd October 2008 - 7:30pm From playing in the strip bars along skid row in Vancouver to having his songs covered by Johnny Cash and Nanci Griffiths and a lengthy corespondence with Charles Bukowski, Tom Russell is one of America's true great songwriters. This is a genuine not to be missed event. Early booking is highly recommended - tickets are flying out! Price: £10 advance - £12 door Milestones Alter Ego 9th October 2008 - 8:00pm Alter ego is an exciting new jazz ensemble based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. In order to develop an individual sound, the band has moved away from standard jazz repertoire in favour of lesser known material originally performed by groups led by Art Blakey, Hank Mobley and Miles Davis. Alter Ego presents a stylistically varied programme including up-tempo Swing, Hard Bop, Funk and Latin Jazz. This dynamic 9-piece band explores the jazz organ genre to the full. Soul, Gospel, Funk, Swing and Samba are all part of the mix. Add to that a collection of accessible, original tunes, many of which were written as tributes to some of the legendary jazz and soul musicians who have inspired Gerry throughout his career and you have an unbeatable format for a great nights' music. This panel will look at how Rock and Metal is perceived, marketed and promoted by the music industry. Does this genre run in a parallel universe to that of the mainstream music business? Our panel all have a great deal of experience to draw upon in answering this question. • Dave Thorne Previously Marketing Manager at Mercury/Vertigo where his roster included acts like Metallica. Dave now runs Noise Pollution Management, looking after Swedish Metal outfit Arch Enemy. • Eric Cook Formerly manager of Venom and now director of Demolition Records. Eric now works with artists such as: Twisted Sister, Hanoi Rocks, Wasp and McQueen. • Dave Ling A music journalist for more than 20 years, Dave Ling was part of the team that launched Metal Hammer magazine into the UK, also a co-founder of both RAW and Classic Rock magazines. He now writes for Classic Rock and Metal Hammer.
