  1. Further to my last post Shotgun has now made chart history for 5 of the chart weeks I mentioned, with the sixth week looking likely to also be a chart record in next Friday's chart. After that the next record it could potentially break is '94 weeks in the top 94' but that wouldn't be until w/e 16th January 2020, but although Shotgun has climbed in two of the last three weeks I don't think it will still within the Top 100 for more than 88 or 89 weeks as there is apparently some obscure event called 'Christmas' that is due to happen then which is expected to push out a lot of the regular charting singles, especially at the lower reaches of the chart.
  2. Wasn't it the Sunday afternoon/evening chart-related show that was extending back to 7pm, because it took on the 'first look', rather than the Friday evening chart show?
  3. As chartologists we often spend a lot of time discussing the biggest selling hits, or those that spent the longest in the charts. Or perhaps those hits that 'would have been' number ones if a chart rule had've been different, or if a different chart source had been used for a certain time period. We also, of course, spend time each week looking at the newly released charts. But it occured to me that sometimes it can be more interesting for nostalgia purposes, or to better understand the past, to look at the more obscure details, rather than always rehashing the most well-known and well worn facts and stories, and if we're going for the obscure, then why not go the whole hog and look at the very obscurest chart hits, the ones that spent a single solitary week in the charts and were never seen (or more accurately heard from) again. Sometimes these were minor releases from otherwise major stars (in the 50s these could simply be the 'other side' of a major hit), some others were knock-off versions of hits that charted for longer in a more well-known version. At the other extreme sometimes the week of chart action represents the only week that that chart act ever appeared on the chart. This then is the journey I propose we go on. I intend to plod along from the first chart in 1952 to within a few weeks of whatever the current date will be when/if I get that far, and detail those chart entries each week that never got another week of chart action ever. I intend to be a bit liberal with regard to what constitutes the same single, so that if a song later charted as a remixed, re-issued or re-recorded version then I will generally consider that to be the same song having further chart action and thus not include it here, though if the act is slightly different (say an old hit has been reversioned with an additional act or acts added/featured) then I probably will still include it if it only charted for a week. I also intend to be as accurate as possible in terms of sourcing the charts etc. I have already done the basic research for the 50's, using the NME chart book, and am in the process of checking against the OCC website, just to catch any re-emergences that may have happened in the download/streaming eras (probably only xmas-based tracks, but you never know). I will use the Record Retailer Top 50 through to 1978 (I believe there is a xmas week in the 60s where Record Mirror published a new chart and RR didn't, so that should be referred too as well), then move to the full 75 from 1978-1983. I'm undecided on whether or not to move to the Top 100 from 1983-1991, as I believe the OCC versions are compressed, as are all publically available sub 75 positions in that era. The OCC also has a Top 100 from February 1994, so we'll have to make a judgement on that too nearer the time, as I don't know if those sub 75s are compressed or uncompressed (or change between the two at different times between then and the download era). I do also have the Chartwatch books from 1995 to 2001, and gather that they use the uncompressed top 200s until May 2001, so may refer to the 75-100 portion of those. I'll have to see what will both make sense and be reasonably manageable to actually compile the ongoing list from. *Original comment edited to add two ongoing lists, one of all the One Week Wonder singles so far, and another of all the acts and artists so far whose entire UK chart career was one week: Singles 01. 1952/11/15 – 10 – Vera Lynn – Auf Wiedersehen (Sweetheart) – Decca F 9927 ▲ 02. The first chart, 15th November 1952, actually yields the first two one week wonders, although this is rather unfair to both, as had the NME chart begun earlier then they would have achieved more weeks and not be here, but we have to start somewhere right? So at number 10 we have Vera Lynn - Auf Wiedersehen (Sweetheart) -XAIBQi85HE Auf Wiedersehen (Sweetheart) had actually been selling well during June and July of 1952, being the UK's bestseller for several weeks during that time, if 'The Missing Charts' by Steve Waters is referred to. It took over the unofficial top spot from the next one-week wonder on our list, which had it's only week in the NME chart at #12 in the same week. That single was Walkin' My Baby Back Home by Johnnie Ray. IPYq_wjzjwk Week two, 22/11/1952, and we probably have our first genuine one week wonder, or at least we have one that doesn't feature in the 'Missing Charts' books, suggesting it had no 'previous' as it were in terms of sales/popularity. The single in question is actually by the first NME charttopper, Al Martino, and is at number 9 in the week he was enjoying his 2nd week at the top. The one week wonder is Take My Heart. Gq6xq-dw38o And that's it for 1952, except for a technicality. The chart of 20th December 1952 was followed by a week where a new chart was not compiled, meaning that most chart sources, whether books or online databases, count the same chart as applying for two weeks. This means that there are two new entries in that chart that only get a second week on chart by virtue of that convention, as they only actually charted in one compiled chart, it just happened to be one that was 'repeated' by chartologists to plug a gap. These two records are added here as a sort of bonus, as we can't be sure if they would have got a genuine second week had a chart been compiled, or whether they are saved from one week wonder status purely by happening to chart in the week in question. At #8 was Bing Crosby - Silent Night 6GUnfLPpjLs I'm actually suprised that it doesn't seem to have re-emerged at any point in the download or streaming era, given the wholesale invasion of the charts at christmas by even the most obscure christmas hits. Also it appears from searching youtube that there are multiple recordings of this song by Bing, and can only take this youtube accounts word for it that they have uploaded the 1952 version (or indeed that a specifically 1952 version even existed), so do let me know if I have linked the wrong version. [Edited on 11th September 2021 to fix a dead link. The previous link was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNwwFZRMxbQ If Bing recorded more than one version of this song then the new link may not be the correct version.] At #10 was Jo Stafford with Jambalaya XHAsFVjrDyg This song was of course later made popular by The Carpenters. And that really is it for 1952. Feel free to post corrections and additions to the thread as I go along (though I'd prefer not to be overtaken, so stick to the period already covered by the thread). Let me know which of the 1952 one week wonders you liked or disliked, and whether (or not) you'd be interested in this as an ongoing thread/project.

(16 other DJs with one guest presenting appearance) So if Scott stays as chart show host for another 2 or so years (assuming infrequent absence) he could be in the top 5, and another 3 or so years he could be in the top 3 (radio 1 era only, as Alan Freeman would probably be number one if the Light Programme era was included). Also if Jordan North provides cover for another 4 shows then he will break into the Top 20.

  7. I've updates my lists to reflect Shotgun's progress in the last three weeks, in particular the fact that yesterday it became the first single to spend 78 consecutive weeks in the top 78. Next week it can't achieve a new first, as Rather Be already managed to do 79 in the 79, but the 6 week's after it could carry on making chart history.
  8. Thanks for the correction, I've amended my post now.
  9. For completeness sake here is the list of all the tracks to achieve feats between 57 weeks in the Top 57 and 100 weeks in the Top 100, with the chart date it happened. Excuse the fact it's acronyms (I usually abhor posts that drop an acronym or two into a comment, in place of the name of an artist, track, tv show etc and expect you to magically know what it means) but this list was originally just the notes I made to check the main list from 57 down, and I only decided afterwards to share it. In any case all the acronyms should be pretty straight forward as all the tracks are literally listed on the post immediatley above, as well as elsewhere in the thread. 57 in the Top 57 21/03/2015 AOM 30/07/2015 TOL 08/10/2015 TMTC 15/02/2018 SOY 02/05/2019 S 58 in the Top 58 10/03/2012 SLY 28/03/2015 AOM 06/08/2015 TOL 15/10/2015 TMTC 22/02/2018 SOY 09/05/2019 S 59 in the Top 59 17/03/2012 SLY 04/04/2015 AOM 13/08/2015 TOL 01/03/2018 SOY 16/05/2019 S 60 in the Top 60 28/08/2010 IGF 21/03/2015 RB 11/04/2015 AOM 20/08/2015 TOL 08/03/2018 SOY 23/05/2019 S 61 in the Top 61 28/03/2015 RB 27/08/2015 TOL 15/03/2018 SOY 30/05/2019 S 62 in the Top 62 04/04/2015 RB 03/09/2015 TOL 22/03/2018 SOY 06/06/2019 S 63 in the Top 63 14/02/2015 H 11/04/2015 RB 10/09/2015 TOL 29/03/2018 SOY 13/06/2019 S 64 in the Top 64 21/02/2015 H 18/04/2015 RB 17/09/2015 TOL 05/04/2018 SOY 20/06/2019 S 65 in the Top 65 28/02/2015 H 25/04/2015 RB 24/09/2015 TOL 12/04/2018 SOY 27/06/2019 S 66 In the Top 66 02/05/2015 RB 01/10/2015 TOL 19/04/2018 SOY 04/07/2019 S 67 in the Top 67 09/05/2015 RB 08/10/2015 TOL 26/04/2018 SOY 11/07/2019 S 68 in the Top 68 16/05/2015 RB 15/10/2015 TOL 18/07/2019 S 69 in the Top 69 23/05/2015 RB 22/10/2015 TOL 25/07/2019 S 70 in the Top 70 29/10/2015 TOL 01/08/2019 S 71 in the Top 71 05/11/2015 TOL 08/08/2019 S 72 in the Top 72 12/11/2015 TOL 15/08/2019 S 73 in the Top 73 19/11/2015 TOL 22/08/2019 S 74 in the Top 74 29/08/2019 S 75 in the Top 75 05/09/2019 S 76 in the Top 76 09/07/2015 RB 28/06/2018 SOY 12/09/2019 S 77 in the Top 77 05/07/2018 SOY 19/09/2019 S 78 in the Top 78 26/09/2019 S 79 in the Top 79 30/07/2019 RB 03/10/2019 S 80 in the Top 80 10/10/2019 S 81 in the Top 81 17/10/2019 S 82 in the Top 82 24/10/2019 S 83 in the Top 83 31/10/2019 S 84 in the Top 84 07/11/2019 S 85 in the Top 85 86 in the Top 86 06/09/2018 SOY 87 in the Top 87 13/09/2018 SOY 88 in the Top 88 20/09/2018 SOY 89 in the Top 89 27/09/2018 SOY 90 in the Top 90 04/10/2018 SOY 91 in the Top 91 11/10/2018 SOY 92 in the Top 92 31/03/2016 TOL 93 in the Top 93 07/04/2016 TOL 94 in the Top 94 95 in the Top 95 96 in the Top 96 97 in the Top 97 98 in the Top 98 99 in the Top 99 100 in the Top 100
  10. I've found one other error in the list I'm afriad. The 69 weeks in the Top 69 record has been attributed to Happy, but that was a new entry at #71. and on its 70th week dropped to #73, so there aren't 69 consecutive weeks that it was in the Top 69. By my reckoning the entire list, from the first to get 1 week in the Top 1, all the way down to 100 weeks in the Top 100, looks like this: NB For those feats between 57 weeks in the Top 57 and 73 weeks in the Top 73 I indicate in the brackets how many other tracks have since reached the same achievement but aren't listed because they weren't first to do it (precise details follow in a second list). From 74 weeks in the Top 74 downwards all feats have either never been achieved, or have been achieved only once, so no bracketed information was necessary. I haven't attempted to calculate the bracketed information from 1 week in the Top 1 to 56 weeks in the Top 56, given that all those records were first achieved between 52 and 66 years ago, so there has been a lot of time for many many tracks/singles to also achieve them, meaning a lot of work would be required to calculate most of that information. Every feat has the date of the chart week when that track/single became the first to achieve that feat 1 week in the Top 1 – Here In My Heart (15/11/1952) 2 weeks in the Top 2 – Here In My Heart 11. Interesting list, thanks for compiling it. There seems to be some mistake with Let It Go being listed as the first single to spend 57 weeks in the Top 57, unless the OCC's chart database has a strange discrepancy in the song's chart run. In it's third chart week it entered the Top 57, but on week 42 of its run it popped out of the Top 57, to #60, for one week, so there aren't 57 consecutive weeks. Hope you don't mind me pointing that out, I'm sure all of us chartologists strive for accuracy above anything else.
  12. Is it possible that they have somehow shifted 25k in a physcial format since 2000, perhaps vinyls reissues? This chart seems to be only digital formats, if I've understood it correctly. Edit: Sorry the quote was meant to be this one regarding My Girl: "6 MY GIRL TEMPTATIONS 43 in 1965 473K Yet on 13/8/18 OCC said for digital sales for tracks released in the 60s, 10 MY GIRL TEMPTATIONS 566,000 Why the discrepancy?"
  13. The Tears of a Clown was number one in 1970, but the OCC show it as number 34 in 1976? They also fail to credit Kim Weston on Marvin Gaye's It Takes Two, and fail to credit Marvin Gaye on Diana Ross' You Are Everything, despite both songs being credited to two artists in their own archive. Shanice also got to number 2 in 1992, and therefore didn't peak at 55 in 1991. Are there any other errors that I and Lee Moore haven't already got on this list? (and already posted in the comments on the OCC page)

  17. Following my recent interest in compiling a daily retro chart by using the Spotify daily chart, it occurred to me that if a particular song only missed the Top 200 daily chart on a single day during the chart week then I should be able to deduce that days stream total by using the weekly total and subtracting the sum of the daily totals for the other 6 days. Before I tried this I wanted to check that 7 daily totals did in fact equal one weekly total, even though I had no reason to suspect otherwise (my genealogist's instinct to verify even the most obvious facts was kicking in). I tried it on Mr Brightside for the week ending 4th July, and by adding the daily totals I got 974296, but the weekly chart has 980451. So then I tried it with Wonderwall, and the sum of 7 days was 525477, but the weekly chart gives 528296. Mr Brightside had some 4155 extra streams (or an additional 0.00426%) in the week, that seemingly didn't happen on any of the 7 days within that week. Wonderwall had 2549 extra streams, or a additional 0.00485%. So then I thought that either there is a reasonably consistent multiplier between the daily and weekly charts (averaging 1.0045 on the evidence of my tiny sample of two tracks from week), or maybe it has to do with multiple versions of a track being available and only one of them streaming enough to hit the Top 200, so I decided to pick a recent song with only one version available on UK Spotify (at least as far as I can tell), and ended up trying Senorita. The sum of Senorita's seven days' totals was 3496176, and allowing for a multiplier, if such existed, I might have expected somewhere between 3510860 and 3512958 for the total on the weekly chart. In fact the weekly chart shows 3649615, which would be a multipier of 1.0439, or a 10x larger effect for this track (extra 4.3% versus extra 0.45ish%. All this seems very odd. I know that Spotify has a 'formula' to protect against fraudulant fake plays etc, but you'd think a discrepancy between the sum of the days and the final weekly figure would be that the weekly figure was slightly lower than the sum of the daily figures, not higher. I also checked that the 'sales' period wasn't misaligned by a day in either direction (perhaps Thursday data is being generated at the same time as the weekly and doesn't get included in the right week? etc), but that doesn't seem to be the case either. Any ideas?

Ha, I nearly asked the same thing, as I found that one first too, despite being in the UK. On with our Throwback Thursday Retro Chart, and it seems to have been the predicatble favourites who got a lift this Thursday, particularly Whitney, even though she was quite far down the TBT list, so I presume cherry picking is the norm for people looking at the TBT playlist. Just had a look at it. Some of them aren't that old really, more of a nudge back than a throwback. I wonder which tracks will make it into our retro chart tomorrow?

Here's the latest chart. I've worked backwards across most of June now, and so far this is one of the shortest charts. Hi all, I started compiling this recently, and wondered if this was something that could be of interest here. Basically I check the Spotify daily chart for Great Britain for each day, and then pick out only those tracks that are at least 10 years old (I generally refer to the date of its chart debut to decide a track's age, but for non-singles or those older tracks that didn't chart at the time but became classics later I sometimes use other criteria to avoid any nonsensical inclusions/exclusions). If people are interested in this then I can endeavour to maintain this on here every day, with a double on Fridays to also include a retro chart derived from the OCC's weekly official chart. I can stop including exact numbers of streams if the mods wish, but have included them for this post to show what I am compiling at the moment. I would also like to back calculate the retro charts for every day in the past that had a Spotify daily chart, but they're only available on the spotifycharts website from 1st Jan 2017 onwards, so that be the practical limit for how far back I can go, unless I can find older spotify charts elsewhere. Here's what the charts would look like for the last few days, obviously they will vary in length from day to day. And note that the number one on these days, Mt Brightside, is on course to enter the top 50 of the OCC Official chart again this week, for its 51st Top 100 stint and its 209th Top 100 week, that's a combined total of 4 years in the top 100! 24. It depends what you mean by 'another' top 40, I guess, but there is at least a chance that Mr Brightside will pop back into the lower reaches of the Top 40 on Friday, if it keeps it streams up in the 130k or so a day level today and tomorrow, as it has so far this week, so they could have 'another' one this very week.
  25. There's no denying it was a huge hit though, and that most people knew of it and could sing sing you a few bars. There's also no doubt that even today, nearly 23 years on, many people still love it.
