Ok I decided to include all acts that peaked at 21, regardless of how many charting singles they had below 20, so our next artist is Rita Pavone. Ha, so do I! Loved it too... she should have been more successful than she was. I've done some research for this thread. I figured that the most successful acts/artists to miss the top 20 would arguably be those whose singles career peaked at 21, so I have compiled an exhaustive list of those who have done that from the first top 30 of the 50s through to the end of 2010, as I don't have the data in a practical format beyond 2010. I'd like to do a little countdown of this, but don't know whether to only do those that had one charting single (as per the OPs criteria) or else also include those that had two or more (in some cases many) singles in the sub 20 regions of the charts? Either way this would be our first act whose singles career peaked at 21, Compagnons De La Chanson (or Mushrooms Of The Song) whose hit The Three Bells reached 21 in October 1959, and was there only single. 3M7Wh_lbpt4

As I see it there seems to be three criteria for this thread: One: Never making the Top 20 Two: Only releasing one single (or perhaps only being remembered for one particular single) Three: Having some sort of fame or notoriety, or being in some way memorable. The first two criteria were more or less set out by the OP, though how strictly the second criteria should apply seems to have varied between posters, and IMHO the third criterion is implied, otherwise we would indeed have just listed all acts and artists who have never made the Top 20.

I've now used 'The Missing Charts' by Steve Waters to extend this list to cover the 1940s and early 1950s. This took some time to do as many names in that era were misleading. Lou Preager, Caroll Gibbons, Issy Bonn, Jan August and Dusty Fletcher all turned out to have been male, for example. But I think I have done enough research now to be sure that everyone on this part of the list is genuinely female, although in the case of one Matty O'Neil there is still a chance this could have been a woman or a pre-pubescent boy, though what little information I have found seems to suggest a woman. From around 1962 (the demise of 78s) until 1989 (the introduction of Cassette Singles) the Singles chart would have been an exclusively vinyl chart, and would have been seen as official from 1969 or so, if not before. The album chart would have been exclusively vinyl as well for at least part of the 60s (the introduction of Cassette Albums, and also 8 tracks, being much earlier than Cassette Singles).

Led Zeppelin's highest peak in the singles chart was at #21, but that's mainly because they were an album act, and only ever released a couple of there most well known tracks as singles years after they had been on successful albums. Other well known people who had one single (or one notable single) and missed the top twenty include: Michael Barrymore - Too Much For One Heart - #25 [promoted as a candidate for the 1995 xmas number one race, most music fans decided this single was too much for one's ears!] Paul Shane - Hi-de-hi (Holiday Rock) - #36 [the theme to the popular BBC sitcom, but the popularity failed to translate into single sales] The Four Bucketeers - The Bucket Of Water Song - #26 [TISWAS presenters Chris Tarrant, Sally James, Bob Carolgees and John Gorman bring their brand of anarchy to the lower reaches of the chart] Valerie Singleton - Solomon's Centipede - #?? [in the late 60s, at the height of her fame on Blue Peter, Val released a single, but BBC rules meant it wasn't possible to perform it on Blue Peter, lest it be construed as an advert, and in the event it completely missed the charts] Jon Pertwee - Wurzel's Song - #33 [the third doctor released this single in the character of Southern Televison's amiable but rather potty scarecrow, but he obviously forgot to put his pop star head on and it failed to bother the top 30] Tommy Cooper - Don't Jump Off The Roof Dad - #40

Two versions of the Crazy Frog, the original Crazy Frog himself, and that Pondlife cover version. The fifties saw many, but the ultimate occurence would surely have been 4 versions of Unchained Melody in the same week, by Jimmy Young, Al Hibbler, Liberace and I forget the fourth one.

If it did have more of an affect on streaming, and therefore a resultant lesser effect on downloads, then that in turn would presumably give an overall lesser effect on the main combined chart, since streaming counts less than downloads do. So if Madonna does want her eventual death to lead to a domination of the Top 40 she needs to wait until streaming has taken over to the extent that it is almost synonymous with the combined chart.

Not possible as Wet Wet Wet wasn't even released in April 1994. The 'week' in their database that appears to cover 24th April to 28th May is presumably the chart for w/e 28th May, and the previous 4 weeks are presumably not in the OCC database. Those four weeks in the UK were topped by Prince (his 2nd topping week), Toni Di Bart, Stiltskin and Man U. We know that Toni di Bart had already taken Prince's first week so I would predict he also took his second one. We also know that Wet Wet Wet had taken Man U's second week, and I don't suppose Man U have such a big following in Scotland, so I would predict that Man U also didn't get their first week in the Scottish chart, but as Wet Wet Wet had only just entered the UK chart during Man U's first topping week, and only at 4, I would guess that Stiltskin was probably still at number one for a second week in Scotland. On the off chance Stiltskin weren't so popular in Scotland then Toni di Bart may have even taken all 4 weeks. But all that would be guessing, so I would probably just indicate on the list that those weeks are as yet unknown.

Hermes House Band actually had two stints at number one, taking all of Daniel Bedingfield's UK weeks! On to 2003 to 2005 where the Fast Food Song tops for two weeks in a nation famed for a fondness for fast food, the Cheeky Girls have a second number one, and Scotland completely ignores Usher (who to this point has not had a number one in Scotland at all!)
