Anyone else watching this? I'm finding it a bit underwhelming so far. And Tom Odell's currently singing "all my tears have been used up", how terribly cheerful for christmas day.

Merry xmas fellower buzzjackers! :D It's nice to know that in a world that increasingly ignores the charts that there is still a place on the interweb here for all of us that enjoy mulling over every placing and movement. Hope you all enjoy Auntie's annual present to us all, Top Of The Pops Xmas! :cheer:

Quite probably. The official Christmas chart was week ending 25th December 1999, so it was sales up to 18th December, a whole week before the day. The new year chart would have been announced on boxing day, yet in 1988 when the chart was being announced on boxing day it was still considered to be the Christmas chart.

It might make you feel a little better then that Mr Hankey was only number 8 in the christmas chart, although it did climb to 4 on the new year's chart a week later. Maybe you were thinking of the classic Cuban Boys hit, Cognoscenti Vs Intelligentsia (aka The Hamster Song), which was in the top 5 on christmas week?

Oh of course not, I was being dopey there, but then he is the only X Factor winner to have an airplay xmas number one, even though he is one of only 4 who didn't have a sales based one and the only one of those 4 who was actually released in the relevant sales week and realistically enter the battle in the first place. So no sales based xmas number one has also been the airplay based christmas number one for 18 years now, blimey.

Wow so in the last 18 years the only sales based xmas number one that was also airplay based xmas number one was Joe McElderry of all people. I guess he was being played more than most X Factor winners singles due to the hype around the Rage campaign that year. Interestingly too there are two songs here that were not in the sales based singles top 10 for that week but still top 20, and one song wasn't even top 30 on the sales based singles chart of the same week (of course I realise that they may have been getting played based more on album success than singles).

Thought I'd add this to the list too UK CHRISTMAS NUMBER ONE EPs Record Retailer started the EP chart from it's first issue, chart w/e 12/03/1960 w/e 31/12/1960 OST - South Pacific No.1 w/e 30/12/1961 Helen Shapiro - Helen w/e 29/12/1962 The George Mitchell Minstrells - The Black And White Minstrell Show (btw I think they were also xmas #1 album in 1962 rather than The Shadows in the earlier list) w/e 28/12/1963 The Beatles - Twist And Shout w/e 26/12/1964 The Bachelors - Bachelor's Hits w/e 25/12/1965 Manfred Mann - No Living Without Loving w/e 31/12/1966 The Who - Ready Steady Who Record Retailer published it's last EP chart for w/e 02/12/1967, since when EPs were usually eligible for the singles chart. The Beatles are therefore the only act in history to do the Christmas Number One treble of Singles, EPs and Albums! Can anyone add the xmas number ones for any of the following? Compilation Chart, Download Chart, Physical Chart (I think Cliff had an extra one in the 00s on that chart).
  8. Thanks fchd, glad you enjoyed it!
  9. Oops, another accidental double post there, sorry, I'm having a bit of a mare with my connection...
  10. The video I've used was made a few years ago when they released their greatest hits album, The W Factor, hence the references to Jedward etc, but I believe it uses the original track from 1974. Here is how they would have looked to the original 1974 audience awflTmH27vQ
  11. Thanks. I've fixed that now.
  12. Oh beep beep boop boop, to quote the retrobot, I started at 1970 to avoid muck ups of that sort (and to conveniently avoid a certain member of the 'Taxus Baccata' club). So does that mean that Record Retailer compiled a chart and gave it to Radio 1 to be announced but didn't themselves publish it that week, then a week later when they weren't even compiling a new chart as they were taking their xmas break they nonetheless published the chart they ordinarily would have published a week sooner? Are 1970 and 1974 the only years that happened?
  13. Depends how old the person he was singing it for was... but yeah it's a bit weird. Not the only time that such a young lover appeared in the charts though, off the top of my head I can recall that Claire something or other sang 'It's orrible being in love when you're only 8 1/2' and I'm sure there are other examples.
  14. And finally a great novelty track' from this year. I was going to end by saying 'Where in the Top 40 will this chart?' but it seems in the event I'd have to add at least one extra 0 to that number... oh well never mind. 18. One of my favourties of recent years... 2009 – Queen And The Muppets – Bohemian Rhapsody (*32) tgbNymZ7vqY
