  1. I think we know Band Aid will be no1 then, but where did Band Aid 2 go? Or did it sell even less than I thought even with the teen heart throbs Big Fun driving it's sales :D
  2. Eh-oh!
  3. Have we got listen to two more X Factor charity singles and three different Band Aids now :  And surely Isaac 'Chef' Hayes had at least one other hit (Shaft) so is lucky to make the countdown?
  4. Just looked on amazon and there are several versions on TV themes compilations, but I don't think any are the real version.
  5. I think they have a cd on amazon. I was thinking about starting a facebook group to buy/chart it this week as a tribute to John Sullivan, but a few archive CDs won't be enough, even in a low sales week. I don't suppose the real theme to Only Fools or Green Green Grass is available anywhere?
  6. Does anyone know if there's a legal download available anywhere? (I've tried Amazon and Play).
  7. Thanks superbossanova that's the one! Looking at it now I think Boycie is meant to be the club owner, hence why he, Marlene and Mickey are there. And did I hear a certain four letter word muttered by one of them right at the end after the van drove off? I remember the Oxford Channel showing it during the summer (2003?) so I'm guessing they got the videos of stuff that had already flopped at a cut price.

Would love to see TOTP back! And a Wednesday night show based on the update is a smashing idea! By the way last years Xmas Totp was filmed a few weeks before xmas, at which point they didn't even know who had won X Factor, so couldn't name/film the xmas #1, even less film a performance. I do have to admit that I converted to CD:uk from TOTP about 98-02/3ish, partly cos cd:uk seemed to allow sexier performances than TOTP (I was teenage then Ok.. ) and partly cos I loved the pop that was on it. I was very interested in the CD:uk chart too but because it often got the no1 'wrong' compared to the real chart the next day (I now know about the different cut-off date and close sales but was mystified at the time). I really hope that the BBC4 repeats are a test of the TOTP brand to see if people still want it (albeit testing absolutely the wrong age group in a way but hey ho), and I can't help but be underwhelmed by several of the performances and songs so far. That Harpo was really funny though, where did he go to?
  9. The original theme tune in series 1 was actually just a bouncy slightly jazzy tune, and it can still be heard in episode 1 during a montage of Del trying to flog the briefcases.
  10. The theme tune itself (from Series 2+ anyway) was sung by it's creator John Sullivan who passed away suddenly on Friday. I'm trying to find out about a rap-type track that heavily featured the theme tune and also featured in the video Marlene, Boycie and Mickey Pearce out clubbing (and with no disrespect intended to the three actors, looking conspicuosly old in a club full of teens). In my area the Oxford Channel used to show it on their nightly music show all the time. They also used to regularly show a song that went 'All the duck are swimming in the water lala lala la la" that I've never found elsewhere too.
  11. A few years ago there was a single release based on the Only Fools theme. The lyric went something like "My name is ginger, I'm getting so much stick, cos I'm a banger and proud of it...". What was it called and who was it by? Thanks

In the price tag example and some other could the answer be that the sales are only for the 'single' version. And that sales for the album track version are not lumped in together.

I also meant to mention that on www.everyhit.com when the same download repeaks for a new reason it is termed a re-emergence rather than either reissue or reentry.

I think the Lulu one might have been a slightly different version that was out as a new release and then the original was reissued by the original label to cash in. Possibly one was just Lulu and one was Lulu and The Luvvers?

Am I going mad or wasn't Make You Feel My Love also on an advert or trailer all the time at some point? I don't watch X Factor but I was very aware of the song for a fair while before I knew who it was by.

I have a feeling that the distinction between reissues, re-entries and the like is gonna get more and more blurred as we get further and further into the download era. The original definitions were from Guiness (or possibly it's predecessor Rock File) and were used in compiling some of their statistics lists. A re-entry is within the same chart-run (and period in the shops pre-download) and a reissue is usually several/many years later with a new catalog number (and sometimes on a new format eg CD when originally 7"). The thing that defines a reissue to me is that there is usually a new or different reason for the single to be selling again (eg artists death, charity connection, new cover version causing interest in the original etc etc). Remixes released at any time other than during the run of the original single are usually taken as separate singles, though this clearly can't apply so well in the download era. Chart rules over the years have also added confusion to this issue. When Je'Taime was in the charts in 1969 and then dropped by it's label to be picked up by a different label the chart treated them as separate singles and essentially had the same song in two places for a few weeks. When Leader Of The Pack was reissued on two (or three?) different labels similtaneously (abt 1974?) they were all combined to one chart position during at least part of their run. There are probably more examples of these anomalies. To me a reissued former chart topper getting to number one is a new number one and a reentry isn't, however I also would argue that if a download (or the same physical release) returns to number one a year or more after it originally got there it should probably be seen as a new number one, since it has a new reason or stimulus for being there. I use the rule of thumb of one year apart or more as a separate single for the calculation of my 'Single of the Week' listings, which can be seen (for 2010+) on my website www.spanglefish.com/webbyswonderfulworld . I think IIRC that only Rod Stewart's Sailing appears on the list twice with the same release as a result of the rule (In 1976 and 77 or 8 I think).
  17. There might not've been downloads then but it was probably the only track all decade to be available in all the big four supermarket chains and Smiths, Woolies and many other department stores. I work for Sainsburys. and the only other ones we've stocked since the millennium are the comic relief ones (as we are the official comic relief supermarket) and for some bizarre reason hundreds of copies of reggae reggae sauce. Plus x factor winners unfortunately.
  18. Glad I'm not the only one who despairs at most radio these days. I only listen to the radio for the chart show (not because of Reggie though, I'd listen to the chart show even if Osama bin Laden started presenting it!), and the local BBC radio late show with Trevor Fry is really good although I don't get the chance to listen as often as I'd like. It isn't just the radio though, on the TV on freeview we have two music channels, when they aren't showing adverts (nearly always simultaneously it seems) or american sitcoms/reality series they seem to either have meaningless charts chosen by random celebs or the same old r+b stuff. Without Gaga there'd be no pop on them at all probably. I remember no more than 5 years ago it was nearly always pop videos and they'd have themed archive videos at weekends (eg Irish for St Patricks or Cheesy Europop for Eurovision week or whatever). Maybe now that I'm nearer 30 than 13 I should just stick to Radio 2 and hear Eva Cassidy and the same few 60s/70s tracks all the time? Re the chart show I think the producers must assume that todays teen don't have the concentration span to follow a chart from 40 to 1 anyway so they probably encourage the texts and waffle. To be fair Reggie seems to struggle with reading the texts most of the time too.

I seem to remember confidently predicting that 'These Boots' was gonna be no1 and around for ages. You'd probably be hard pushed to find anyone who remembered it now. It took me a lot of thinking to remember who had released it when I was trying to recall it a few weeks ago, and I own the cd somewhere!
  20. I am right in remembering that Viva La Vida was fairly widely available in the UK as a cover mount 7" on some music mags?

Was the woolies chart ever in danger of being accurate? I'm pretty sure that record labels used to buy their position on the woolies chart. Anyhow I was gonna say that I remember I Believe My Heart (Duncan and Keedie) and the Manic's The Love Of Richard Nixon being Cduk number ones so they must've been mids toppers, was it Call On Me that beat them or am I miles off?

Maybe I'm just sad but I've always considered every single I've ever bought as a sort of vote. I've bought hundreds of singles over the years and there must be dozens that I've never played or else played once that evening when I got in (or these days offline) and not again. I would definitely have bought more copies of Foundations that particular week had I known that it was that close. And I did buy Rage without knowing If I'd like it (I did although it was a bit sweary for my normal tastes) and about seven or eight copies of Bird Is The Word, some through gifting (I still don't believe the final placing and sales info for that BTW). I have also withheld my purchases of some singles if there was something else I wanted to get to number 1 and I knew the week would be relatively close. Oh and I bought James Blunt's You're beautiful on several different weeks as it was getting exciting willing it up the chart every week and trying to get it to number 1. I don't like the 'one person can't make any difference' attitude as if we all thought that noone would buy any legal singles or do anything much. While I thiink of it how many times has the Chart Update had a different number one to the final chart? Wonder if the public announcement of placings on a weds has increased tactical buying generally and ended up changing the outcome in any given weeks?
  23. I'm confused. Are they putting the releases on the online retailers sooner or sending the tracks to radio later? I guess it's the same overall, but if in fact they are sending to radio later it could mean people trying to find the rumoured new single by their favorite artist on an illegal site or somewhere else as they now can't hear it on radio either!
  24. We should think of it as an online totp! Different hosts different weeks but the same reliable charts!
  25. It's every top 40 from 12 Mar 1960 till 3 Jan 2009. Except when there wasn't a new chart over xmas or when occasionally only a top 30 was compiled. Obviously NME didn't agree tp them using the 1952 to Feb 1960 charts though.
