Top of the Pops 2021 Specials
Yes Fearne turned 40 this year, and says she chose to step down as part of making major changes in her life, which I hope is the truth of the situation, but I think the BBC did used to have a rule that presenters of youth and childrens' programming had to be under 40, so I hope she wasn't pressure to leave due to her age. I just checked and Clara is 37, so potentially she isn't into most of the music on the show either. Even totp new boy Jordan is 31 apparently, so maybe he is a bit more likely to like the music featured, and at least he'll probably have some memory of the weekly show and thereby have some level of affection for the TOTP brand I guess.

The UK's Favourite Christmas Number One
10th December results Quarter-final 1 - 815 votes cast 1981 - Human League - Don't You Want Me - 40.4% (329 votes) 2002 - Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground - 59.6% (486 votes) 11th December results Quarter-final 2 - 507 votes cast 1975/1991 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - 59.6% (302 votes) 2006 - Leona Lewis - A Moment Like This - 40.4% (205 votes) So only Girls Aloud gained straight votes compared to Round 2, and in fact have been gaining every round, whilst Human League lost votes from Round 2, though still have a few more than Round 1. Queen lose straight votes compared to Round 2, and in fact registers their lowest vote total so far, but still gets through in a battle against Leona who also registers her lowest vote total so far. 12th December voting still open Quarter-final 3 - 2008 - Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah 2009 - Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name So the last Quarter-Final will be a Spice Girls vs Spice Girls vs Spice Girls vote!

The UK's Favourite Christmas Number One
10th December voting open for a few more hours - Quarter-final 1 - 1981 - Human League - Don't You Want Me 2002 - Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground The Human League had more straight votes and a higher percentage in Round 2, though Girls Aloud were ahead of them on both measures in Round 1. Girls Aloud are currently ahead in this quarter-final as I write this, but there are a few more hours left to vote, so it could conceivably change.

Round 2 contenders ranked by both straight votes and percentage By straight votes 1188 - 2009- Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name (Up 229 votes on round 1) 606 - 1996 - Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 (Down 126 votes on round 1) 592 - 1981 - Human League - Don't You Want Me (Up 362 votes on round 1) 528 - 1998 - Spice Girls - Goodbye (Up 93 votes on round 1) 514 - 1975/1991 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (Up 68 votes on round 1) 461 - 2002 - Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground (Up 39 votes on round 1) 440 - 1989 - Band Aid II - Do They Know It's Christmas (Up 52 votes on round 1) 435 - 1985 - Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone (Up 110 votes on round 1) 386 - 1997 - Spice Girls - Too Much (Down 35 votes on round 1) 371 - 2006 - Leona Lewis - A Moment Like This (Up 31 votes on round 1) 366 - 1984 - Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas (Down 16 votes on round 1) 354 - 1987 - Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind (Down 57 votes on round 1) 328 - 1974 - Mud - Lonely This Christmas (Down 76 votes on round 1) 297 - 2008 - Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah (Down 309 votes on round 1) 262 - 2016 - Clean Bandit - Rockabye (Up 100 votes on round 1) 260 - 1995 - Michael Jackson - Earth Song (Down 520 votes on round 1) 224 - 2001 - Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman - Something Stupid (Down 91 votes on round 1) 122 - 1986 - Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite (Down 125 votes on round 1) By perecentage 80.8% - 1975/1991 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody 73% - 2009- Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name 69.3% - 1981 - Human League - Don't You Want Me 59.8% - 1997 - Spice Girls - Too Much 59.1% - 1998 - Spice Girls - Goodbye 58.2% - 1996 - Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 57% - 2008 - Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah 56.6% - 2002 - Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground 53.1% - 2006 - Leona Lewis - A Moment Like This 46.9% - 1974 - Mud - Lonely This Christmas 43.4% - 1987 - Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind 43% - 2001 - Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman - Something Stupid 41.8% - 1985 - Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone 40.9% - 1984 - Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas 40.2% - 1995 - Michael Jackson - Earth Song 30.7% - 2016 - Clean Bandit - Rockabye 27% - 1989 - Band Aid II - Do They Know It's Christmas 19.2% - 1986 - Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite So of those eliminated in Round 2, Band Aid II had the most straight votes, very closely followed by Shaky, whilst Mud had the highest percentage of their vote of any eliminated contender in the round. We've lost the last bastion of the 2010s now, with the elimation of Clean Bandit, leaving us with the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, and even then Queen is the sole representative of the 70s and Human League are the only 80s contenders remaining. Aside from the second coming of Bo Rhap, the 90s are now soley a Spice Girls zone, but they do at least have three fingers still in the pie so to speak, as all 3 of their yuletide toppers are through.

The UK's Favourite Christmas Number One
7th December results Vote E - 646 votes cast 1995 Michael Jackson - Earth Song - 40.2% (260 votes) 1997 Spice Girls - Too Much - 59.8% (386 votes) Vote F - 521 votes cast 2001 Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman - Something Stupid - 43% (224 votes) 2008 Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah - 57% (297 votes) Probably worth pointing out that all four songs got less votes in Round 2 than they did in Round 1, with Alexandra's votes more or less halving, and Michael Jackson's reduced to exactly a third of what it was before. Of the previous 8 songs in Round 2 only one of them, the Pet Shop Boys, got less votes than hey had in Round 1. 8th December voting now open Vote G - 1984 - Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas 1998 - Spice Girls - Goodbye Vote H - 1975/1991 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody 1986 - Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite In Vote G we have the song that gained the highest percentage of the vote in Round 1, Band Aid, versus Goodbye which got slightly more straight votes than it. In Vote B Queen got comfortably more straight votes in round 1 than Jackie, but Jackie got a sligthly larger perecentage of his vote.

Top of the Pops 2021 Specials
I bought it every month for a long time. Too long a time if I'm honest. When I started buying it in 1995 it had mutliple charts and other chart and music based facts and features, then toned down a bit over time to a less chart-nerd oriented and more general celeb gossip mag but by the time I stopped buying it, maybe a decade ago, it was almost devoid of anything related to music at all, at least partly because there was no longer a show for them to use to get photographs and interviews with the pospstars.

Top of the Pops 2021 Specials
They did say they were axing it a few years ago now, but then they had a lot of complaints and backlash and had to backtrack, so perhaps they are instead trying to wind it down over the years to a point where they think no-one will care if they axe it. I do think it will go eventually and I'll be sad when that day comes, even if I'm not so bothered by the acts appearing any more.

Top of the Pops 2021 Specials
" BBC Radio 1’s Clara Amfo will return as host alongside fellow Radio 1 DJ Jordan North, who will be making his Top of the Pops debut." So after presenting Top Of The Pops for 17 consecutive years it appears Fearne Cotton has ended her association with the show, removing the last real connection between the annual Christmas show and the weekly show of old.

Is AIWFCIY the most famous song ever?
I imagine certain national anthems would be well-known all over the globe. God Save The Queen/King would have been have considered the anthem of a large number of other countries and territories at various times, and the Star-Spangled banner must be very widely known too. I'd also imagine that instrumentals have a bit of an edge here too, given they wouldn't need translating for different countries, though I'm not sure which. I did think of things like the theme from the Great Escape, and the Dambusters March, which I'd assume are pretty well known tunes.

The UK's Favourite Christmas Number One
December 5th results Vote A - 1628 votes cast 1989 - Band Aid II - Do They Know It's Christmas - 27% (440 votes) 2009 - Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name - 73% (1188 votes) Vote B - 854 votes cast 1981 - Human League - Don't You Want Me - 69.3% (592 votes) 2016 - Clean Bandit - Rockabye - 30.7% (262 votes) December 6th voting open Vote C - 1974 Mud - Lonely This Christmas 2006 Leona Lewis - A Moment Like This Vote D - 1987 Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind 2002 Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground In Vote C the oldest contender still in the contest is up against one of most recent. Mud did get more straight votes and a higher percentage in their first round vote than Leona did, but Leona could benefit this time from being newer. In Vote D the contenders had very similar vote totals and percentages in Round 1, albeit with the Pet Shop Boys marginally higher on both measures, so this could be a close one.

The UK's Favourite Christmas Number One
I just looked, out of interest, and in Xmas week 2000 Holler was dropping three places to #46, whilst Out Of Your Mind was re-entering at #79. Maybe Holler would have sold more in xmas week if it had been 'Hollier' as Dong's slip of the keyboard rebranded it.

The UK's Favourite Christmas Number One
So for Round 2 it looks like they may have advanced just the winner of each of the 18 round 1 votes, in which case the contenders still in the competition are as listed below. The 80s come out as the most represented decade at this stage with 6 songs still in the competition, although the 00s are close behind with 5 still remaining. We've already said goodbye altogether to the 50s, the 60s and the 20s, whilst the 10s cling on for dear life with just the one representative, Clean Bandit. The oldest contender still in the competition is Mud from 1974 and the newest one is the aforementioned Clean Bandit from 2016. Slade had the highest number of straight votes for an eliminated contender, whilst Cliff Richard's Mistletoe and Wine had the higest percentage of their vote of any eliminated contender. I can see no pattern in how they are pairing the contenders in Round 2, so I assume they had a random draw or something. Contenders for Round 2 In order of which round 1 vote they won 1. Leona Lewis 2. Band Aid II 3. Alexandra Burke 4. Rage Against The Machine 5. Mud 6. Queen 7. Michael Jackson 8. Spice Girls (2B1) 9. Spice Girls 10. Spice Girls (G) 11. Clean Bandit 12. Human League 13. Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman 14. Girls Aloud 15. Band Aid 16. Shakin’ Stevens 17. Jackie Wilson 18. Pet Shop Boys In age order 1974 Mud 1975/1991 Queen 1981 Human League 1984 Band Aid 1985 Shakin’ Stevens 1986 Jackie Wilson 1987 Pet Shop Boys 1989 Band Aid II 1995 Michael Jackson 1996 Spice Girls 1997 Spice Girls 1998 Spice Girls 2002 Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman 2003 Girls Aloud 2006 Leona Lewis 2008 Alexandra Burke 2009 Rage Against The Machine 2016 Clean Bandit

The UK's Favourite Christmas Number One
Round 2 has now begun Vote A - 1989 - Band Aid II - Do They Know It's Christmas 2009 - Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name Vote B - 1981 - Human League - Don't You Want Me 2016 - Clean Bandit - Rockabye Vote A is a clash of the titans, with Rage being the contender who got the highest amoung of straight votes in round 1, and Band Aid II getting the third highest perecentage, but I'd guess the number of straight votes is a better measure of success and that Rage will probably win this one. In Vote B Human League gained both more votes and a higher perecentage of the vote in their voting than Clean Bandit did in theirs, so on the stats they should win, but they weren't massively ahead of Clean Bandit by either measure, so it could be close and it's possible that there could be a surprise here.

We have also yet to have a chance to vote on The Scaffold, Jackie Wilson, The Pet Shop Boys and Shayne Ward, so I think there will still be two more votes for 4th December, with or without Rolf.
