This is a good question. While I'm also not convinced this story is real...here's my understanding of why the girls could be paid for their story.
The production wouldn't NEED their approval, necessarily. They're in the public eye. It could be made without them. But having the girls' approval would go a long way toward the perceived legitimacy of the project. And perhaps more importantly...it'd go a long way toward the production getting to use the girls' music. A production could up and make a Spice Girls movie...but to get to use the copyrighted music would need the ok of the girls themselves (and some other important parties, I imagine). A few years ago, there was a made-for-TV Aaliyah film that did not get the approval of her estate. So they up and made the film without the ability to use Aaliyah's hits. It wasn't...great. And I do think it'd be very hard to do justice to the Spice Girls' story without the music being involved.
All that said, even films where the stars gave their blessing/got paid haven't always been loved by the artist. I'm reminded of the Tina Turner biopic What's Love Got To Do With It. Tina recorded new vocals for use in the film...and gave approval to who would play her. However, when asked about the film...Tina would just say she wished it had more truth. I guess artists could negotiate casting approval or script approval or anything else in these...but ultimately, they probably need to find filmmakers they trust.
I’d have thought the money to license the music would be paid to the record company though? Not just a round million lump some to each of the girls.
If they were exec producing or, as you say, providing content, I’d be more convinced. But the article suggests they wouldn’t have had to lift a finger.
I just feel like this was written to feed the rift rumours and hate on Geri. Not a fan of that.

Just been reading on Wikipedia about Impossible Princess' initial release and it says the album sold 20,000 copies in its first two weeks, "ten percent of the expected sales figure."
How can there have been expectation of 200,000 sales in a fortnight for this album when it's predecessor had sold 100,000 in total?
(I realise it's Wiki, so might not be entirely accurate).
It also says Kylie considered retiring after the album due to bad public and media reaction. I wonder how much she truly contemplated packing it all in... and look at what we (and she) would have missed out on if she had!!
I haven't listened to this album for years so going to give it a spin and see what I think with fresh ears.
I suspect dropping the album title was a contributing factor to the poor sales. That must’ve hindered the campaign given it ended up with the same title as the previous album. An album track could’ve been chosen as a title track (Limbo, for example). There are some decent options.
The fates seemed to conspire against her with this album. So glad our Kylie is no quitter.

WNGST sounds *a bit* like a Spice Girls b-side. It’s kind of awkward that it’s about the girls having her back, but Spice Girls had obviously disintegrated at this point. The temu spice girls backing dancers (soldiering through without much choreography) don’t help on that score either.
So for me, the campaign *slightly* undermined Emma as a solo artist.
Edit: *Realised I sounded a bit too strong in those opinions there.

The album version of WNGST is a little better. But even that has a bare vocal arrangement that needs filling out with some harmonies.
If the single had to fall in that slot, I’d have gone double a side with Better Be Careful and A World Without You.
It’s a shame Emma couldn’t have released High On Love as a summer single too tbh.

At the time I thought it was a strange song for them to choose. I would’ve preferred them to do a non-musical song and just bang it on the album anyway. As long as it had a sympathetic sound.
For me, a John Lewis ad cover version would’ve been lovely. Imagine them having a Lily Allen/Slow Moving Millie type moment. Maybe a cover of something like Gravity by Embrace … although Embrace fans would be outraged 😆

I’d be concerned if Kylie left BMG.
Sure. I don’t understand why releases are not always very synced up to maximise chart position on the first week. But I guess there may be manufacture and logistical reasons. And chart positions don’t indicate quality these days.
But other than that, I think they’ve done her absolutely proud. The music has moved in a really organic direction. Kylie is developing more than other artists at a similar stage of their career.
