Whatever happened to the Number One? Does the biggest song even matter anymore?
OK, this is one of the most lovely replies I've had one here! π₯° I think it is that "shared" quality you described with radio and TV charts that we have lost, which means the general public is less interested as a whole. I also think streaming has diluted the value of big hits, the million sellers especially. A million selling single used to be a real achievement, and it took 60 years, all the way from the 50's to 2010 to get 100 million selling singles (Rihanna & Eminem Love the way you lie became the 100th million selling single). However by 2017 thanks to streaming the amount had tripled and there were 311, Goodness knows how many there are now. Then you have Harry Styles #26 tracks which are on "1.2 million sales" while something like Tragedy by Steps which was a #1 also on the same sales of 1.2 million., there are some album tracks never released as singles that are "platinum sellers" because of streaming... it just makes a mockery of it all. Recently I have been the most surprised by Madonna's album performance, I was very much expecting something along the lines of 1-37-OUT but so far it has achieved 1-9-14, which is amazing!!

Top 100 Best Selling Singles Acts of the 1990s
I agree that my initial direct comment was uncalled for giving our past, which is why, on reflection, I apologised for it, and that apology still stands, sorry. My more recent comment was simply because dandy* said that Jason was entering counter arguments at a tangent which was quite unfair really as he was actually making a valid and fair point (which clearly wasn't understood), I was simply saying that if that was to be highlighted then your initial comment should be too. Not having a go at all (again I do apologise if it comes across that way β€οΈ) just stating a fact. The rest has really just been a fair and interesting discussion, you actually sparked a good debate. βΊοΈ I also want to say, I do agree with you Janet Jackson was a big artist for sure, I personally don't think anyone was saying she wasn't successful, just that they didn't think she was on the same level as certain other acts mentioned. That was my take on it (I may have read that wrong of course).

The Saturdays
I'm searching an updated (or most updated) sales stats of The Saturdays. I'm sure there used to be a thread on here but that may have gone with the Sats forum closed perhaps? Anyone who has them and can share, it would certainly be appreciated. β€οΈ

I think that TOTP and all the other chart shows going was a big part in the lack of public consciousness and care for the #1 single. I also think less people listen to the radio now streaming is so big (I could be completely wrong on that aspect) as people choose playlists over radio play. Either way, I follow the chart out of habit now but I really have little to no interest in it now. I find the albums chart a tiny bit more interesting thanks to older acts playing the formats game and achieving success.

Top 100 Best Selling Singles Acts of the 1990s
Jason's point was simply that, Janet's single sales average out at 114,000 copies per single over 21 singles after you take away the 700k single in the post above. It doesn't necessarily make them a huge act, rather a consistent one perhaps. For many posters in that thread, her songs don't stand the test of time against other artists who didn't achieve a #1 single. It is all of course personal preference. He them made the point that if someone sells 2 million of 1 single and makes the top 20 best selling singles acts of the 90s, despite not selling anything after, does that make them a huge singles act? Lou Bega comes to mind for instance here. I will add that this all started because he made a point of saying that people who had a different opinion about her success should be "laughed at", and leave it at that. This is my final post.

Top 100 Best Selling Singles Acts of the 1990s
Yeah, that's a bit unfair. He's of course entitled to say that he thinks her to be huge but then people are allowed to rebuttal with why they disagree. For the record I think she was certainly a big act too, but I wouldn't put her in the legendary status of Tina, Bon Jovi, Madonna, Michael Jackson because she doesn't have those big memorable songs (in my opinion obviously others disagree) that those acts do, nor does she has the massive million selling album(s) that all of those act achieved nor was she a huge touring force selling out stadiums. I don't personally think she has that iconic single that is played a lot still today or a karaoke favourite ala Simply the best, Living on a prayer, Man... I feel like a woman etc. That's the point being made as to why some people are not so shocked that she hasn't had a solo #1.

Top 100 Best Selling Singles Acts of the 1990s
I don't dispute that point either, I am surprised she hasn't had one. All I was commenting on was that people were saying she wasn't as big of an act as Tina Turner and Bon Jovi in the UK, I'd argue that their overall sales with both albums and singles, then also concert tickets sold support the point that those people were making. Bon Jovi - approx 10.1 million records in the UK Tina Turner - approx 10 million records in the UK Janet Jackson - approx 6.4 million records in the UK I also like all three acts however I'll admit I am biased towards Tina, she is one of my favourite artists. π€

I apologise for upset. I do try to treat everyone the same and I would have made the exact same comment to anyone else but, I do appreciate with our history how it comes across. Best wishes.

Top 100 Best Selling Singles Acts of the 1990s
Fair point but again Bon Jovi β 7.2 million albums β Wembley Stadium (90,000) Tina Turner β 7 million albums β Largest venue Wembley Stadium (90,000) Janet Jackson β 2.3 million albums β O2 / Manchester Arena (20,000) You can see why people were saying Bon Jovi and Tina Turner were a lot bigger than Janet Jackson over here.

Top 100 Best Selling Singles Acts of the 1990s
She was obviously very successful and more so than people give her credit for, however the average for her single sales is 114,000 copies a single after taking out that big hit in the post so a rather average seller overall on the singles market. She will obviously be a victim of lower sales in the earlier 90s part of the decade to be fair. Tina Tuner and Bon Jovi for instance who have charted lower on this rating did have the album sales and the stadiums to back up her being much bigger than Jacket Jackson, which was the point being made about them being "bigger stars."

Top 100 Best Selling Singles Acts of the 1990s
Wow that utterly shocks me re Janet Jackson and Prodigy, both were really not on my radar much in the 90s. I suppose Janet always suffers from not being as successful as her brother and being somewhat overshadowed by him over here. I'd also say that Madonna taking the undisputed Queen of pop title plays a part somewhat.

Ann Droid β’ Series 1
Well I've finished this and I absolutely loved it, Diane Morgan and Sue Johnson are brilliant in it. In fact the whole cast except for the characters of Michael and Renee were brilliant. I agree with comments about Michael and Renee just being very unlikable, I found Michael's character to be so selfish and annoying, could have done without his scenes to be honest. Hoping for a series two, with more focus on just Linda and Sue and their adventures rather than Michael (although I get the feeling the Ro-Robot will feature in the next one and could be quite comical with Michael. In even better news Philomena Cunk is coming back! π Honestly Diane Morgan is comic genuis!

Friday Chart Predictions
Robbed? Will was clearly the better singer out of the two, Gareth was decent but not on Will's vocal level. Also their subsequent careers suggest the right person won, Will Young is still achieving top 5 albums in the 20s while Gareth is stripping on a stage. π

Top 100 Best Selling Singles Acts of the 1990s
Some huge names, lower than I expected them to be, Britney (but of course she was the very end of the 90s), Robbie in particular. Then others a lot higher than I would have thought B*Witched for instance and Eternal! I'm guessing this means Steps are top 20 which also blows my mind a bit, as I knew they were successful but not top 20 best selling singles act of the 90s successful! π€― They really get snubbed when it comes to band / group ratings considering their success back then and also continued success albums wise since coming back in 2017!
