  1. No worries
  2. I found this on spicenews: Spice Girls Insider Spice - 9/21/00 Whatís your favourite song on the album and why? Mel C: I think Goodbye is a special favorite because itís already been a hit and it was released about the time Geri left us, so itís quite a special song. I really like the new style that weíve worked on, especially with Rodney Jerkins and everybody at Darkchild. I like that modern R&B sound. Holler is a good dance track and Let Love Lead The Way is a really good ballad. Thatís why weíre going to release them both on the first single. Emma: Oxygen is probably one of my favorite tracks. When you listen to this song it kind of takes you to another place. Itís just an amazing track and Iíd really like everyone to sit and listen to it, because there are lots of harmonies and secret bits, which you may miss first time. Itís very uplifting, yet sad at the same time. Itís just very emotional. Victoria: Mine is If You Wanna Have Some Fun, because itís got such an old school kind of swing beat, and also because itís been written by Jam and Lewis, who Iíve always been big fans of. Theyíve done everything with Janet Jackson. Mel B: Itís so hard to choose. I really like Weekend Love, a song about a relationship between a boy and a girl which goes against stereotype. Basically, itís the boy thatís looking for it to turn into something bigger, but the girl just says sorry, "a weekend love is all it was." Why did you come up with the title Forever? Mel B: Lots of reasons really. At our shows the fans have always come along with banners saying "Spice Girls Forever" and one of our books was called Forever Spice. Even if the band wasnít around in ten years time, we hope that no one would ever forget the Spice Girls, because weíll never forget as long as we live. Weíll always be Spice Girls at heart and our songs will go on forever. Mel C: Also, at the end of Viva Forever, when I start singing my ad libs, I sing "Viva Forever, Iíll be waiting". But when we sing it live, I always sing "Spice Girls forever". Itís just kind of been a fan thing for ages! What were the other options you came up with? Mel C: I wasnít aware of any other names going round. I thought it should be called Forever. Victoria: A lot of people seemed to think it would be called Third Time Around. Not sure where that came from! Are there any lyrics from the new songs that you particularly like? Mel C: There are loads really. Because the albumís a bit more mature, a lot of the songs are quite sexually-orientated and Iím not a big fan of explicit lyrics, really. I get embarrassed easily! There are some lovely lyrics in Tell Me Why, itís got a lot of emotion in it. And, of course, Let Love Lead The Way, we all need something to help us and love should be able to conquer all. Itís just a story about all of use feeling let down by all the devastation in the world. Emma: I love "If You Wanna Have Some Fun" because itís very old-school and very cheeky. The chorus goes, "If you wanna have some fun, track me down and get my number, you could be the one," then later it goes, "wink, wink, nudge, nudge". Itís brilliant!!! A lot of people say the album has a much more mature sound, would you agree? Mel C: I think itís more mature in the way that itís the year 2000 now and music has changed, so itís a lot more modern and has a more fashionable sound. Still, the topics we sing about are quite girly, because when weíre together we act like weíre a lot younger! The singing is much better because weíve had a lot more experience in doing vocals. Emma: Weíre a little bit more grown up because everyone gets older, but thereís definitely a lot of the kid in us. We still like to make up silly rhymes and stuff. A lot of our fans are very young and we wanted to appeal to them as well, do we didnít want to make the album sound too old. On the other hand, our vocals have really moved on and weíve worked very hard on them. Victoria: Yeah, definitely. Itís much stronger, vocally and lyrically. But thatís natural. Weíre older, two of us have had babies and got married, weíve done a huge world tour and weíve been managing ourselves, loads of stuff really. Mel B: Itís also because weíve worked with Rodney Jerkins quite a lot. Heís done some great stuff with Destinyís Child and gives the album a real R&B flavor, while the four of us give it that pop element. Do you think it will sell as many as the previous albums? Mel C: No. I think it would be ridiculous even to entertain the thought that we could re-live our former success. At the time, it was a phenomenon, and phenomena donít happen that often. It should sell well, though, because itís a good album. Weíve also got really good fans that are so supportive of all our solo stuff as well as the band, even though we havenít released anything for a really long time. Why has the Spice album taken so long to come out? Emma: Because weíve been working really hard on it and taking our time! The other two albums were made so quickly that we almost didnít have time to think. I hope when you listen to Forever you really appreciate it and enjoy it. I really love it. I play it all the time, in my car and at home. In fact, I got into trouble the other day because I had it on too loud and the security guy downstairs told me off!
  3. I think they say something in their magazine.
  4. I think nothing to read or anyway new hoodies.
  5. I thought we were talking about a major. She was under Sony for her first album, so she had a label behind her. An indie one is limited as for budget. So that means Claire did very well charting at #2 without a major.
  6. On iTunes it's under her name. https://music.apple.com/us/album/euphoria-d...tion/1692970185
  7. I think Claire is indie.
  8. Well, I'd like to see longevity to be honest. Just one week in the top 100 is the target for a lot of artists like Melanie, Claire, Natalie Imbruglia...
  9. Track by Track Set You Free The lead track introduces the EP with light dub-step moments and thrusts into full-on hands in the air synths and a tight kick drum. Through big anthemic vocals Melanie sings about the freedom you feel in that perfect dance floor moment – blinded by lights, drowning in the music, feeling the love from your friends. Sunrise It's immediately apparent this song is inspired by nights out in Ibiza. The track boasts a big-room sound with a killer beat and chopped up vocals. Girl meets boy, dances the night away, boy looks just as great in the sunlight the following day. A holiday romance and a real peak-time dance floor moment. Walk Away Taking things a little slower, the final song narrates the organic end to a relationship and the weight it brings off your shoulders...a sigh of relief and a 'change of atmosphere'. Mid-tempo and orchestral, it's a dramatic ending to the EP with it's big hip hop drum and a epic build.

Anything Goes (iTunes bonus track) Track by track by Melanie 1. Maybe This Time Liza Minelli immortalised this song with her unforgettable Oscar-winning performance in the 1972 movie adaptation of the show, Cabaret. I was lucky enough to see the 1998 Broadway revival with an incredible cast, including Alan Cummings as The Emcee and the late Natasha Richardson playing Sally Bowles. It was Natasha's performance which really inspired me to tackle this great song. I love its power and pain, and how it builds to that commanding, big show ending. 2. Another Hundred People I remember listening to a Christmas concert on Radio 2 in 1989, Claire Moore sang this and I was captivated. I taped the song and listened to it over and over, never thinking I'd have the opportunity to record this brilliant Stephen Sondheim song - I'm so glad I have. Its energy and pace wonderfully portrays the excitement and buzz of city life. In terms of making this for this album, it required a lot of control and breathing! My experience of working in the theatre really strengthened my voice. Eight shows a week is gruelling and something you would never do in pop. It was great recording with a new found confidence, especially a song like this which I would have never attempted before. 3. I Know Him So Well Well This really is a very special song on the album as I duet with my dear friend Emma Bunton. It's been a while since we had been in a recording studio together but it was so memorable and enjoyable. I love Emma's voice and hearing our vocals together again was very emotional for the both of us. Chess has a fantastic score written by Abba's Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus with lyrics by Tim Rice. Seen as one of the ultimate musical duets, it was originally recorded in 1984 by theatre icons Barbara Dickson and Elaine Paige. We adored every moment of recording our version and I'm so grateful to Emma for making it happen, we hope everyone loves it as much as we do! 4. Aren't You Kinda Glad We Did I was introduced to jazz singer Sarah Vaughn and this beautiful song by my manager. I went on to perform it first at an open air concert in Leeds in 2001 and later that same year for the King and Queen of Sweden, no less. Since those memorable moments I have loved the song and always wanted to record it, this album has given me that chance to perfect a classic from George and Ira Gershwin. Another wonderful lyric, it tells the story of following your heart whatever the consequence and regardless of what other people may think. Despite what may be seen as a forbidden love, its tones sparkle with delight and I feel Peter's production captures this perfectly. 5. I Don't Know How To Love Him There are so many splendid versions of 'I Don't Know How To Love Him', one of my favourites being Yvonne Elliman's performance from the 1973 Jesus Christ Superstar film. It's such an incredible show, I've had the most amazing year working with Andrew Lloyd Webber and I'm so excited to be performing this song night after night when our production goes out on tour. Playing a role is interesting – being Mary Magdalene or Blood Brothers' Mrs Johnstone and being on stage in character, you have to immerse yourself into the story and their situation. However, for this album I was just me and I recorded the songs for the enjoyment and memories they've given me over the years. Or in this instance, the memories to come. 6. Both Sides Now Peter introduced me to this breathtaking song written by Joni Mitchell, it must be one of the most covered songs in history and also features in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Only once actually released as a single by Judy Collins in 1968, we were more inspired by Joni's emotional version from her album of the same name, released in 2000. The subtle but sweeping production encompasses all expressions of love and life. I find the lyrics and hauntingly beautiful melody make it incredibly moving to perform, as I was lucky enough to do so with Peter at the 2010 Edinburgh Jazz Festival. 7. Ain't Got No / I Got Life I've had so much fun performing this song many times and if you can't tell, had just as much fun recording it! Originally a hit for Nina Simone combining two numbers from the musical Hair, it was actually a 2006 remix by Groovefinder we took inspiration from for our preferred final sound. A great positive horn section and some fun backing vocals, for me it sounds like it's basking in sunshine. There are so many words to fit in, but it's just so infectious, empowering and uplifting, you can't help but smile and shake something. 8. I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself I have been a fan of both Burt Bacharach and Dusty Springfield for as long as I can remember. A truly heartbreaking and emotional song, it is Dusty at her finest. Like so many other people, I've sung this song at the top of my lungs at home or in the car for years! But when not serenading at the traffic lights, I've been incredibly lucky to perform it with some pretty cool people too. One of my favourites was with Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra on his Radio 2 show last year. A more surreal moment was at the Royal Albert Hall backed by the London Symphony Orchestra for Mikhail Gorbachev's 80th birthday. I was so happy to sing this classic again and finally have it on record forever on this album. 9. I Only Have Eyes For You Most people may be more familiar with The Flamingos and Art Garfunkel versions, but 'I Only Have Eyes For You' was originally written in 1934 for the film, Dames. Peter and I listened to lots of different covers of this song and all the songs featured on this album. We took a bit of our favourites and tried to add our own twist, on some more than others. We've kept the romantic and dreamy qualities in this melody which I love, it's one of those songs everybody knows but you just don't know how. The way it floats and flows, I often sing it to my little girl, so it's taken on a whole new worth and significance. 10. Tell Me It's Not True Working in Blood Brothers reignited my passion for musical theatre and became the inspiration for making this album, so for many reasons this is such an important song for me. Mrs Johnstone was my first role in a musical and travelling to London's West End every day brought back so many memories and reminded me of all the great songs and shows I'd left behind since working in pop music. I loved working in the show, my brilliant cast, director, musical director and the wonderful Bill Kenwright, had so much faith in me and nurtured me through some terrifying moments. After performing this song for six months through the emotional finale scene, I felt very comfortable singing and recording it for the album. I hope you enjoy Peter's variation on this very special song. 11. My Funny Valentine We had a great singing teacher at The Doreen Bird College called Pat Izen and this song was one of her favourites, not only does it remind me of her but also the many auditions it has served me well in! Written by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart, who have composed many a fantastic show tune, it has been covered by many artists over the years from Ella Fitzgerald to Elvis Costello and now, me. When it comes to songs which have been recorded several times I always try to interpret them in my own way. This is quite a slow, smooth number which required a lot of control but I was delighted with our final version. 12. Something Wonderful This is such a beautiful song from The King and I, another favourite from my college days. I was reminded of this number when I was in Blood Brothers by Phil Stewart, who was playing The Narrator in the show. Thank you for that Phil as it has become one of my most treasured on the album. ------------------------ A thread to discuss about Stages, Melanie sixth solo album produced by Peter-John Vettese.

  20. bAvrk6UOBMo The high drama and unplumbable emotional depths of England’s footballing adventures have long been heightened by song, from official tournament tie-ins such as New Order’s World in Motion to fan-generated favourites such as dance track turned terrace chant Freed from Desire. Now, ahead of the Women’s World Cup kicking off on Thursday in Australia and New Zealand, the England women’s team hope to have a crowd-pleasing singalong of their own: Call Me a Lioness. A starting 11 of female-identifying British artists, including Melanie C and Self Esteem, have come together under the moniker Hope FC to record the unofficial track for England’s World Cup campaign. Songwriter Glen Roberts was hit by inspiration as the Lionesses won Euro 2022 and co-wrote it with producer Joel Pott and singer-songwriter Olivia Dean. Rather than focusing on the sometimes miserable experience of being a fan of the underdog – as Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds did on their enduring Euro 96 hit Three Lions – it puts fans into the players’ mindset in the dreamlike aftermath of their 2022 victory, and manifests another: “We’re bringing it home again”, as one of several chantable lines goes. Roberts, Pott and Dean started with a few beers and a checklist of elements that make a good football anthem: nostalgia, determination, national pride and a feeling of being in it together, be it euphoric victory or crushing loss. “If you look at Three Lions or Sweet Caroline, they all fall around the same tempo – they’ve all got this natural sort of moving stomp element,” Roberts says. And, of course, you need a rousing chorus that everyone can sing regardless of range. What was trickier was filling the time between the choruses, the quiet bit before the loud. “You can’t have a chorus full of singalong joy and just have the same in the verses.” Dean was an essential female voice, who, as a West Ham fan since childhood, wanted to recreate the sense of being in a crowd and singing your heart out. She remembers sitting on her dad’s shoulders and singing – “they probably weren’t very PC songs or chants when I was 11 years old” – and how that made her feel like a part of the team. Women’s football has had to fight for years to achieve wider recognition, and that additional feeling – of being part of something bigger – was a big focus for her. “When we were writing it, all I could think of was girls in primary school and them having something to shout and sing together,” she says. Call Me a Lioness certainly has the feel of a community song. The artists – with Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell, Sports Team’s Alex Greenwood, Marika Hackman, Rachel Chinouriri, Shura, Jasmine Jethwa, Rose Gray and Highlyy rounding out the lineup – were invited to take part in a very casual way, mostly by way of being friends and football fans. The result is a good-natured song with the air of a school choir, albeit one with Sporty Spice ad-libbing in the background. “It’s not premeditated in any way,” Roberts says – while it’s getting distribution from EMI, it was brought together before the label’s involvement, and all proceeds are to be split between four sport-focused charities. “I think it’s really reflective of women’s football itself, where it’s all about community,” he continues. Shura says she “never said yes to anything faster” – as a child she was scouted to play for Manchester City’s youth team and has always wondered: what if? What if there had been better funding, better sports rehab, better resources for girls like her playing in thick northern mud? “What I love about this England team is that they’re so aware and conscious and thankful to the women who have come before,” she says. “I can’t play for them, but I can sing for them now. I feel almost a part of that story.” Just as the Lionesses’ progression to the World Cup’s knockout stages isn’t guaranteed, Call Me a Lioness also faces a struggle. For a song to become an anthem it relies on repetition, and at a time when people listen to music in a fragmentary way across radio and personalised streaming services, there’s a real chance that it won’t reach enough ears, often enough, to become part of the cultural soundtrack. Think of Olé by rappers Krept & Konan, the official England song for the 2020 Euros, which went more or less ignored. But the artists and songwriters of Hope FC still hope to hear fans singing the chorus line – “Call me a Lioness, I wear it on my chest” – or even just the la-la-las. If it succeeds, it will be organic, like a grassroots local team come good. As Potts says, “it was just a bunch of mates coming together to make a song about football.” “It’s about time that we have a song of our own,” Shura adds. “Especially since we actually won something.” theguardian.com
