Classic Albums - Personal Review
Brilliant album. My favourite is probably Seconds - about the assassination of JFK. I Am The Law was surely a reference to Judge Dredd. Also not to be forgotten was the remix album Love And Dancing and a remix of Do Or Die which appeared on a compilation album Methods Of Dance. Also brilliant was the 12" of Love Action which added an instrumental Hard Times.

My Album of......... 1970!
Now that's a CD I'd buy (well, if it had a few more tracks on it!) What is it with Bananrama murdering tracks from 1970? Although, to be pedantic, the Steam single was released in October 1969, and Shocking Blue in December 1969! Singles were aloud to find their own way into the charts in those days without massive hype; so neither made until January 1970.

My album of..... Before I Was Born
Good list but I was born in May 59 so my own list would be really retro! Perhaps I'll give it a go because I don't agree with Rob that music before then was "really bad".

RETROHEADS ALBUM OF........ current indie!
You can count me as one of the "old buggers" who likes some of the new indie precisely because it doesn't turn its nose up at pop music. There's nothing wrong with a good tune. Indie is always at its worst when it is being surly towards the rest of the world and popularity in particular. All indie has its roots in 60s beat/psych - it's a style of music that hasn't really changed it's blueprint for 40 years - and, at the time, the groups were trying to sell records and get in the charts, not turn their back on it. Indie today has become a catch-all term for anything with guitars in it that isn't specifically rock - in other words with a pop element in it. I like some of Rob's selections and dislike others - but it's the same with thisispop's list. Each is a list of indie records - neither is more indie than the other. My own list will follow!

Bands that eventually shortened their name
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark didn't shorten their name. People who couldn't spell manoeuvres did!

my album of...... punk.
Aah… punk. This is where I came in. I'd already started collecting records when punk happened and changed everything. Suddenly Yes and Mike Oldfield seemed unlistenable. If you couldn't say it in three minutes you were definitely out of date. OK, I've mellowed a bit since then! Here's my album… The Stranglers - (Get A) Grip (On Yourself) This was their first single, and still my favourite. Saw them at Guildford Civic Hall in May 1977 (my first punk gig). Guildford was their home town (they started off as the Guildford Stranglers). They challenged the audience to get rid of the chairs which had been laid out in front of the stage - they ended up in a huge pile at the back of the hall. Punk gigs were banned at the venue for nearly a year! Buzzcocks - I Don't Mind My favourite Buzzcocks single. Love the key change towards the end. Swoon! Saw them at Guildford Civic Hall as well, in 1978. The Undertones - You've Got My Number (Why Don't You Use It?) Their other great single - and, to continue on a theme, I saw them at Guildford Civiv Hall as well, in 1979! The Sex Pistols - Anarchy In The UK The one, the only, the snarling, roaring Anarchy In The UK. After this everything was different. 999 - Nasty Nasty Recklessly over the top pop-punk on green vinyl! Their finest three minutes. X-Ray Spex - The Day The World Turned Day-Glo Poly Styrene was a true original. Saw them live at Croydon Greyhound in 1978. The venue was upstairs above some shops. Pogoing was banned because the plaster was coming off the ceilings in the stores below! The Heartbreakers - One Track Mind Johnny Thunders carried on with this punk band after the New York Dolls broke up - they even toured with the Sex Pistols. The Vibrators - Automatic Lover Cartoon punk from this lot, who's first two albums are definitely worth a listen. The Clash - Complete Control My favourite of their early singles - produced by Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Saw them at the Anti-Nazi Rally in Victoria Park in 1978. The Ramones - Swallow My Pride Yet another great single from Da Brudders. Get their first four albums. The Damned - New Rose The first single by a UK punk band. Bought it when it came out in 1976 and I've loved it ever since. Saw them in London at the Marquee in summer 1977. It was their first anniversary gig and they gave away a free single; Sick Of Being Sick / Stretcher Case Baby - wish I still had my copy. Generation X - Wild Youth Billy and the boys with three minutes of stompalong action. Bonus track The Saints - (I'm) Stranded All the way from the other side of the world, Australia's Saints may not have looked very punk but they sure sounded it.

My album of ..... (Post Disco) Dance Tracks
Some great choices so far - plus some I haven't heard - which is always good. New Order - Blue Monday A seminal track that virtually kick-started indie-dance crossover all by itself. The Secret - Starkissed Totally over-the-top and totally obscure trance record - all 11.30 minutes of it! Breakdown after breakdown and garish yellow vinyl - what more could you want? Daft Punk - Digital Love Love this track - such a great song. Fluke - Tosh (Gosh) They rather lost out to Underworld - sounds similar but they started it! Chemical Brothers - The Golden Path More of a song than a dance track maybe, but still my favourite of theirs. Features vocals by Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips. Goldfrapp - Train Thundering great dance track from a great act. Mory Kanté - Ye Ke Ye Ke (The Afro-Acid Remix) Afro-house that made the Top 30 in the late 80s. The Shamen - Pro>Gen A hit a year later as Move Any Mountain, the first version was my favourite. Underworld - Dark And Long (Dark Train) Loads of classics to choose from - so I've chosen this! Legend B - Lost In Love (Red Jerry Remix) I have a feeling I picked this for another compilation on here - well here it is again! Marmion - Schoneberg (Marmion Remix) Totally classic trance track. The Clash - Rock The Casbah Let's end on another seminal dance/rock crossover track.

MY ALBUM OF......60's MOTOWN and black music.
There's just too much to choose from, so here's a random selection. Ray Pollard - The Drifter Awesome soul ballad that just gets bigger and bigger as it goes on. Wilson Pickett - Land Of 1000 Dances The best version of this song - and a great party track. The Temptations - Get ready Great uptempo track that tends to get forgotten in favour of their later 'social conscience' stuff. The Four Tops - I'm In A Different World I never tire of Levi Stubbs' voice. One of their lesser hits, but still a classic. The Contours - Do You Love Me? Another great party track. A hit in an inferior version by Brian Poole and the Tremeloes! Judy Street - What? Northern Soul classic covered by Soft Cell. Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay Obvious maybe, but still a haunting, soulful track. Bobby Hebb - Love, Love, Love Best known for 'Sunny', this is a good Northern dancer. Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come Quite possibly the most moving song ever committed to vinyl. Monumental. The Drifters - I'll Take You Where The Music's Playing Forget their 70s naffness, their 60s stuff is great. Archie Bell and the Drells - Tighten Up Thought by some as the first disco record - and it's from 1968! The Four Tops - Baby I Need Your Loving Levi Stubbs again - what a voice! This, of course, should be a four CD box set! Great music.
