Depends what you were into. If you were into American indie they were great years (Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü, The Pixies, Nirvana etc). If you were into dance music this was a very important period (Detroit techno, New York house etc). If you were into UK indie there was a lot going on (post-C86 bands, The Stone Roses, The Jesus And Mary Chain etc). The late eighties were a formative period for what was to come in the nineties (grunge, rave, Britpop etc). I've never understood people who didn't "get" the late eighties. I guess you were too busy listening to the garbage being played on Radio 1 by "Smashy and Nicey" ageing DJs!

Everything on Motown? Phil Spector's productions? Most soul music? Although I thought SAW were terrible it doesn't follow that all music not written by the performer was terrible. Some of the greatest performers hardly wrote at all (Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Elvis Presley etc). SAW were poor because their songs were mind-numbingly over-simple. Quick hits with no lasting power. Who plays 'em now?

With a name like Grimly Fiendish, playing Devils' advocate seems only right! I think companies prefer to make their own decisions. In high-flying jobs (the City, creative sector, etc) I expect a go-anywhere internet connection is just another perk of the job.

Completely impractical and highly unlikely! This is a matter for companies and their employees. The government wants to portray itself as sympathetic to business so it's not going to introduce legislation that takes the decision-making out of the hands of employers - get real!

Going after benefit cheats is a great idea. Using discredited technology to do so isn't.

All the replies to the first post have been about positive discrimination. And yet there was nothing about positive discrimination in the first post, nor any hint in the BBC's reply that they were going to introduce it! Lighten up people!

I think it makes sense to bring the age you can start smoking into line with the age you can start drinking. Sure, anyone determined enough to smoke under age will still find ways to do so, but I don't think we should stop making laws just because some people are still going to break them. Might as well have no laws at all in that case! Smoking kills. Those it doesn't kill it makes unhealthy. That's just the way it is.
