I hope people vote for what they think is the best design - not their favourite artist!

It was by both but, you're right insofar as it was Ruby who had a hit with it - something I wasn't aware of, I've only ever known the Cochran version.
  5. The original version of "Hound dog" was by Big Mama Thornton, not Willie Mae Thornton.
  6. Strangely the three examples you chose have at least still got music careers. They can usually get someone to release the music they make, and they can fill out decent sized venues when they choose to. Real obscurity would have to be someone like Billy Fury, who had a string of hits but ended up working in a factory in the 70s!
  7. Ah what memories. I was 13 at the time and Top Of The Pops and The Sunday Chart Countdown were regular fixtures in my life, as they probably were for all my friends at the time. 8. I couldn't abide the fad for medley records - horrible!
  9. The answer to the original poster's question is yes. We can probably all think of music that we loved at a certain time but can't for the life of us understand why we did now. The chart is always simultaneously full of transient tracks and future classics, and often it takes time for this to become apparent. So Capital Gold will play Elton John but not the Bay City Rollers, Mojo will write about the Sex Pistols but not Boney M. Elton John is constantly repackaged and these collections usually chart. The Bay City Rollers are available on budget compilations and don't chart. The Sex Pistols' "Never mind the Bollocks" is being repackaged on its 30th anniversary, Boney M will get no such treatment. In a way this is quite reassuring. Significant music endures, transient music is there to be enjoyed by us all at the time, but won't endure. Mushymanrob's comment that he tires of old tunes doesn't apply to me - I still get a kick out of hearing Elvis, The Beatles, The Clash, New Order, Pulp. On the other hand I still love new music. Have you heard how brilliant Richard Hawley's "Tonight the streets are ours" is? And Hard-fi, Sugababes, Tiny Dancers, Caribou, Robyn, Timbaland, etc, etc, etc… I wonder which of those we'll be celebrating in 30 years' time.

The death disc thread got me to thinking about tribute records to dead pop stars. "Three stars" by Eddie Cochran was about Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. Strangely it wan't released as a single in the UK until 1966, long after Eddie himself was dead. A dead person singing about dead people! "Tribute to a king" by William Bell was about Otis Redding. It reached #31 in 1968. "I remember Elvis Presley" by Danny Mirror. A dreadfull cash-in which charted less than a month after Elvis died and reached number 4. And he was Dutch! Any more tribute records to dead pop stars?

Anyone remember a song called "Shannon"? It was by a beardy American called Henry Gross. It reached #32 in August 1976. Got lots of radio play. Another death disc about a dog, who swam out to sea and didn't return.
  19. We're well over a hundred now. I think we should make it 200. I can think of many more favourites. The same will be true of the eighties. Apart from the other two I mentioned on the other thread (Leader Of The Pack, Johnny Remember Me) the one that immediately springs to mind is "Endless Sleep" by Jody Reynolds except, of course, she doesn't drown in the end. The impression, because the lyrics are in the past tense, is that she's gone into the sea and drowned herself but, rather disappointingly, our narrator rescues her in the last verse! Then there's Elvis's classic "Old Shep". Do dogs count?
  21. Speak for yourself. The only BBC I listened to at the time was John Peel and Radio 4! Now the only BBC I listen to is Radio 4. My memories of the charts are as much about the unusual records that made the lower reaches as the bland nonsense at the top end! So my favourites from the "proper" chart were these… 02. The Pet Shop Boys And Dusty Springfield - What Have I Done To Deserve This 07. New Order - True Faith 13. Prince - U Got The Look 16. The Smiths - Girlfriend In A Coma 23. Then Jerico - The Motive 33. The Jesus And Mary Chain - Happy When It Rains 42. Beastie Boys - She's On It 43. Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin 47. Public Image Limited - Seattle 54. Yello And Shirley Bassey - The Rhythm Divine 85. The Primitives - Thru The Flowers 96. Crazyhead - Baby Turpentine It was certainly slim pickings in the chart by the late eighties when all the daytime DJs were Smashy and Niceys. No-one played much indie, rap or that new-fangled house music during the day, so not much of it charted.

  23. I heard "Terry" by Twinkle last night. She only had one other minor hit with "Golden Lights". "Terry" is a classic death disc (like "Leader of the pack" and "Johnny remember me")
  24. So if you're in not in either list does that make you middle of the road? Not quite mainstream, not quite independent - the story of my life (or my musical tastes at least). :music:
  25. I've been voting steadily for Robyn, but I've voted for Natalie this time - great song!
