Anyone remember a song called "Shannon"? It was by a beardy American called Henry Gross. It reached #32 in August 1976. Got lots of radio play. Another death disc about a dog, who swam out to sea and didn't return.

Apart from the other two I mentioned on the other thread (Leader Of The Pack, Johnny Remember Me) the one that immediately springs to mind is "Endless Sleep" by Jody Reynolds except, of course, she doesn't drown in the end. The impression, because the lyrics are in the past tense, is that she's gone into the sea and drowned herself but, rather disappointingly, our narrator rescues her in the last verse! Then there's Elvis's classic "Old Shep". Do dogs count?
  4. Speak for yourself. The only BBC I listened to at the time was John Peel and Radio 4! Now the only BBC I listen to is Radio 4. My memories of the charts are as much about the unusual records that made the lower reaches as the bland nonsense at the top end! So my favourites from the "proper" chart were these… 02. The Pet Shop Boys And Dusty Springfield - What Have I Done To Deserve This 07. New Order - True Faith 13. Prince - U Got The Look 16. The Smiths - Girlfriend In A Coma 23. Then Jerico - The Motive 33. The Jesus And Mary Chain - Happy When It Rains 42. Beastie Boys - She's On It 43. Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin 47. Public Image Limited - Seattle 54. Yello And Shirley Bassey - The Rhythm Divine 85. The Primitives - Thru The Flowers 96. Crazyhead - Baby Turpentine It was certainly slim pickings in the chart by the late eighties when all the daytime DJs were Smashy and Niceys. No-one played much indie, rap or that new-fangled house music during the day, so not much of it charted.

  6. I heard "Terry" by Twinkle last night. She only had one other minor hit with "Golden Lights". "Terry" is a classic death disc (like "Leader of the pack" and "Johnny remember me")
  7. So if you're in not in either list does that make you middle of the road? Not quite mainstream, not quite independent - the story of my life (or my musical tastes at least). :music:
  8. I've been voting steadily for Robyn, but I've voted for Natalie this time - great song!
  9. I see the top five contains 2 TV and 1 film related releases, plus a compilation - Talib Kweli is the only artist album not relying on other media to get there. It could never happen here!
  10. Robbie Williams is the only one likely to lose out from that lot - although Dido will do better in the album chart than the singles chart. I think we're going to have a lot of brief number ones as they all jockey for position. Missing from this list are Westlife, Celine Dion, Black Eyed Peas, David Gray, Doves, Paolo Nutini, Usher, Russell Watson, Led Zeppelin and Radiohead - all of whom will have an impact on the albums or singles chart.

Actually, you can. If you are oppressed you don't sit around counting the dead and then say "Right lads, that's a million, we can start blowing stuff up now". As usual, Vic, your arguments are straight-jacketed into absurdity. I don't usually join in on threads you're involved in because they seem to descend into extremist banality, so don't expect an answer to your answer to this post!

  19. Okay here's three more - which takes the total to 97. Can someone come up with three more so we can finish it? The Stables Market is one of four in Camden, plus all the small shops in the main street. The Council could probably get away with closing one market without it affecting trade - tourists won't know for years that it's not as good as it once was and will keep coming. Whatever the level of trade the Council still get their business rates.

New-Labour Camden Council know exactly why they're doing it - for the money. All those lovely chainstores mean increased rents, and business rates are based on the value of the rent. So you push out all the small businesses who can't afford the higher rents and ta-da - more money for Camden Council's coffers. Sorted!

Daft post of the week? You cannot possibly be that paranoid! Come off it Vic - sign! It won't be the bravest thing you've ever done in your life. You won't be "disappeared" - promise! Stand up and be counted - then we're all Spartacus.

I think you'll find that the Government already know your address!
  25. Read the book "Freakonomics" by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner to see why Giuliani's "zero tolerance" policy was complete bullsh!t and had nothing to do with crime reduction. A right wing paper like the Sunday Telegraph is always gonna try to sell you the line that a more restrictive society is "good" for you. Don't fall for it.
