  1. I see the top five contains 2 TV and 1 film related releases, plus a compilation - Talib Kweli is the only artist album not relying on other media to get there. It could never happen here!
  2. Robbie Williams is the only one likely to lose out from that lot - although Dido will do better in the album chart than the singles chart. I think we're going to have a lot of brief number ones as they all jockey for position. Missing from this list are Westlife, Celine Dion, Black Eyed Peas, David Gray, Doves, Paolo Nutini, Usher, Russell Watson, Led Zeppelin and Radiohead - all of whom will have an impact on the albums or singles chart.

Actually, you can. If you are oppressed you don't sit around counting the dead and then say "Right lads, that's a million, we can start blowing stuff up now". As usual, Vic, your arguments are straight-jacketed into absurdity. I don't usually join in on threads you're involved in because they seem to descend into extremist banality, so don't expect an answer to your answer to this post!

The Stables Market is one of four in Camden, plus all the small shops in the main street. The Council could probably get away with closing one market without it affecting trade - tourists won't know for years that it's not as good as it once was and will keep coming. Whatever the level of trade the Council still get their business rates.

New-Labour Camden Council know exactly why they're doing it - for the money. All those lovely chainstores mean increased rents, and business rates are based on the value of the rent. So you push out all the small businesses who can't afford the higher rents and ta-da - more money for Camden Council's coffers. Sorted!

Daft post of the week? You cannot possibly be that paranoid! Come off it Vic - sign! It won't be the bravest thing you've ever done in your life. You won't be "disappeared" - promise! Stand up and be counted - then we're all Spartacus.

I think you'll find that the Government already know your address!
  17. Read the book "Freakonomics" by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner to see why Giuliani's "zero tolerance" policy was complete bullsh!t and had nothing to do with crime reduction. A right wing paper like the Sunday Telegraph is always gonna try to sell you the line that a more restrictive society is "good" for you. Don't fall for it.

    Done!
  19. Stand by me was a hit in 1961, not 1967. I've just changed the date in Wikipedia. Just goes to show you can't trust it!

Thanks for the votes everybody! My fave was Ashley's Remi Nicole cover. Simple, evocative and brilliant!
  22. In America he did, but inevitably on a UK forum we're talking about the UK charts where, sadly, Curtis Mayfield didn't get all the hits he deserved (and neither did the Impressions, his previous group, in the 60s - they scored no UK hits).

Better to ask what makes self-destructive people so talented. Surely it's pretty well established that troublesome backgrounds can sometimes lead to finding a way out via creativity. If you delve into the backgrounds of quite a lot of creative people over the centuries, whether painters, musicians, novelists, dancers or whatever, you will find a troubled past. I think Freud said something about art being a way of changing the world by people who are disatisfied with it, or with their own experience of it. Sadly, alcohol and drugs are another way of dealing with unhappiness, so it should come as no surprise that often creative people resort to them. Of course some of them are going to crash and burn in front of our eyes (or rather the prying eyes of the media). I find it more remarkable that so many stay so sane!
  25. The original poster has defined the terms of this thread - not Guiness or the OCC! So we're being unofficial - but that's the kind of rebels we are! :naughty: :arrr: :teresa: Here are some more artists with one major hit to their name - all classics. Thunderclap Newman - Something in the air (#1 in 1969 - Produced by Pete Townshend. Bob Lind - Elusive butterfy (#5 in 1966) - Follow-up spent 1 week at #46. John Fred and his Playboy Band - Judy in disguise (with glasses) (#3 in 1968) - terrific American pop. Tommy James and the Shondells - Mony mony (#1 in 1968) - 1 minor hit in 1966, but much more successful in the USA. The Merseys - Sorrow (#4 in 1966) - two ex-members of the Merseybeats cover a McCoys B-side, and Bowie does it again later. Love Sculpture - Sabre dance (#5 in 68) - manic cover of a classical piece courtesy of Dave Edmunds.
