In America he did, but inevitably on a UK forum we're talking about the UK charts where, sadly, Curtis Mayfield didn't get all the hits he deserved (and neither did the Impressions, his previous group, in the 60s - they scored no UK hits).

Better to ask what makes self-destructive people so talented. Surely it's pretty well established that troublesome backgrounds can sometimes lead to finding a way out via creativity. If you delve into the backgrounds of quite a lot of creative people over the centuries, whether painters, musicians, novelists, dancers or whatever, you will find a troubled past. I think Freud said something about art being a way of changing the world by people who are disatisfied with it, or with their own experience of it. Sadly, alcohol and drugs are another way of dealing with unhappiness, so it should come as no surprise that often creative people resort to them. Of course some of them are going to crash and burn in front of our eyes (or rather the prying eyes of the media). I find it more remarkable that so many stay so sane!

Doesn't Scotland also come out as one of the worst diets in Europe? There is more and more evidence to suggest a direct link with cancer and poor diet. 'The Velvet Underground and Nico' was their first LP in October 1967. 'The Velvet Underground' was their third LP (after 'White Light, White Heat - June 1968) in April 1969.

I bought my first CD player in 1988. I bought two albums - ABC's 'The lexicon of love' and Big Audio Dynamite's 'This is Big Audio Dynamite' the same day.

This censorship is happening because these events took place abroad. If it had happened over here the parents would be getting far more criticism, but the media would far rather blindly defend British people abroad and criticise foreigners than get at the truth. Xenophobia pure and simple.

The title track had reached number 6 in April. Fortuitously for RCA they had reissued 16 singles in picture sleeves in June - no less than eight of them would re-chart at once at the beginning of September. The chart is also notable for the number of punk and new wave hits in the summer of punk. Some would establish themselves with a string of hits, for others this was their peak. The Rods (alias Eddie and the Hot Rods), Mink De Ville, The Adverts were having their finest hour while The Boomtown Rats, The Stranglers, The Jam and The Sex Pistols would go on to greater things. Interesting that at the same time as punk the first stirrings of electro-pop were evident with Moroder's "I feel love", Space and Jean-Michel Jarre all charting.

I rate Elvis, me. There may be others on this thread pulling him down, but it ain't me! That doesn't mean the record company aren't doing what I say they're doing. Uh-huh-huh! I've never understood this slagging off of artists on the chart forum. After all, if you're not interested in other people's musical tastes why belong to a chart forum? Charts are all about everybody's tastes not just yours.
