Now that Rihanna has got so high on downloads alone, I wonder if the record company will cancel the physical release.

It's not bad but not that memorable. Surely it's chart placing will depend on whether Radio 1 get behind it? They may not because she's not "young" enough - and we know how obsessed Radio 1 is with "young"! Maybe Top 20.

This just isn't true. The singles chart was reflective of what the record companies decided to release as singles and how long they were available for. Now a popular tune can continue to be bought until everyone who wants that tune has bought it. That is much more "reflective of tastes". I think the chart is more interesting now. Look at the way tunes used on TV can re-chart without the record companies choosing to re-release them as a single. The public decide to chart it by buying it - not the record company by deigning to release it. Remember the chart isn't a game - it's a marketing tool for the record companies. I think people forget that on these boards. The record companies (who pay to have the chart compiled) are not concerned about how "interesting" it is. They want to know what's selling; what the public are interested in. As chart watchers we should be too. Why be interested in a popularity contest if you're not interested in what's popular? But the upside is that, as many have already said, the charts aren't going to disappear so long as the record companies are prepared to pay to have them compiled. I think it's a possibility that the BBC will stop doing the chart show one day (like they did TOTP) - but that doesn't mean the chart will stop being made. It's not compiled for Radio 1; it's compiled for the record companies; Radio 1 just chose to use it - but they're not obliged to.

I am as against this as I am against chopping off thieves' hands. And it won't surprise you to learn that I'm against the death penalty as well! However monstrous the crime I don't want monstrous things done on my behalf in the name of "law". End of.

The big Balearic club hit Thrashing Doves had was "Jesus On The Payroll (Street Groove)". This was a promo remix that wasn't made commercially available (big mistake on the part of the record company). The version you see on the regular release was not the club version. Bizarrely a couple of Balearic DJs also picked up on their live version of "Sympathy For The Devil", which was a B-side on one of their 12" singles.

I couldn't believe how bad Juke Box Jury was by today's standards. A programme where basically you watch people listening to music! I don't think the BBC had quite got this television concept worked out in their heads yet. I remember those artists on TOTP though. Great stuff.

I'm puzzled as to why so many of you think that only big hits should be on the playlist. Surely that would just make Radio 1 like every commercial radio station - same records for months, no new stuff, etc. Also remember that it's not just the singles chart that is important. They have to take the album chart into consideration, so even if the 4th single from an album doesn't chart very high, the fact is it's still a popular album and, therefore, a popular track. Bands that are popular on the live music scene must also be taken into consideration. The world doesn't just revolve around the top twenty singles, you know!
