Retro moaners thread
How come Blondie gets three songs on the list whereas Simple Minds, The Beat, Paul McCartney, The Vapors, Stacy Lattislaw, Roxy Music, Ultravox, The Cramps, The Gap Band, U2, The Rolling Stones, The Skids, XTC, Devo, Dr Hook, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Clash, The Electric Light Orchestra, Fleetwood Mac, The Whispers, Elvis Costello, Iron Maiden etc, etc, etc… don't get any? And how come a total non-hit by an MOR artist (The rose by Bette Midler) is on your list instead of any of the above? I bet if you stopped 1000 people on the street and asked them what music best represented 1980 not one of them would come up with that! Is it a personal favourite? I like the retro board for it's individualism and diversity, something not represented by this list. This "game" would be so much improved by letting people list their individual top 20s for each year - rather like the "Albums of the decade" threads we've been doing for the last few weeks. So far not one LP has been ascribed to the wrong decade, so you can probably trust us not to do anything silly like put a record that was released in November 1980 in the 1981 list (Fade to grey by Visage). This list feels artificially "packed" with records that aren't particularly relevant to the year in question - which means the results will be unrepresentative of the tastes of the people on this board - something that will be even more true in the later stages. Ultimately, despite your protestations, this list represents your opinions, not ours. Count me out.

100 Great Albums of the 70s
Excellent list - very light on prog rock (thankfully)! This is probably a far less snobby list than you'd get from Mojo, Uncut or The Word. Onwards to the 80s…

‘Great Songs Missing from iTunes’
There are loads of obscure (and some not so obscure) tracks that I like that aren't on iTunes… The Millennium - Begin An entire album from the sixties (recently put on our 100 best albums of the sixties thread), brilliant sunshine pop. The Dylans - Planet love Indie tune from the early 90s. Nothing at all by this group on iTunes. Paul Haig - Heaven help you now (12" mix) They've got the 7" version and a horrible remix but not the full glory of the 12". Jason and the Scorchers - Absolutely Sweet Marie Blazing version of the Bob Dylan song, but nothing from the first two LPs on iTunes. The Slickee Boys - This party sucks or When I go to the beach 80s US garage band. 2 tracks on iTunes but not their greatest. Power Of Dreams - There I go again Irish group from late 80s/90s. Another group with the same name on iTunes. Madder Rose - Beautiful John Later stuff available but not this early classic, or the LP it's from. Sugar Ray - Mean machine Lots available but not this single. The Muffs - Guilty Ditto. Mega City Four - Wallflower Only 13 tracks available from their extensive catalogue. Xymox - Imagination Older and newer stuff available but not the late 80s/early 90s tracks. Bailter Space - Shine One later LP available form these New Zealand shoegazers, but not the early classics. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes - Little girl so fine Lots available but not this early classic penned by Bruce Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt. Basement 5 - Silicon chip An LP is available, but not this single. Banbara - Shack up Total funk classic - but you can get A Certain Ratio's cover version! The Valentine Brothers - Money's too tight (to mention) The original, as destroyed by Simply Red. Bunny Wailer - Love fire The original, as destroyed by Simply Red. Yellow Magic Orchestra - Computer game UK top twenty hit. Nothing at all by this seminal Japanese electronic group. Freeez - IOU UK number 2 electro hit. Nothing at all by The Belltower, The Secret (trance act), The Lime Spiders, Fingerprintz, Bag O'Shells, Blessed Ethel, Birdland, The Crystal Set, The Misanthropes, Two People (UK 80s pop duo), The Three O'Clock, Gaspar Lawal, Nova Mob (Grant Hart group after he left Hüsker Dü), The Pollen, Gretschen Hofner, The Scratch Band, Girls At Our Best!, Tiger (the UK indie group), The Daytonas, Viciuos Pink/Vicious Pink Phenomena, Symposium, The Moffs, The Fallout Club (Thomas Dolby and Trevor Herion), Vice Versa (who became ABC) and The Ting Tings. I could go on. However much music there is on iTunes there will always be more recorded music that isn't on iTunes.

scotlands smoking ban....
You say "I don't understand how this can take effect so quickly and how they can measure it" and then you say "it can't be measured in 18 months". Which is it? You don't understand how they can measure it, or you difinitively know that they can't measure it? Scotland and that town in Colorado would suggest that they can measure it - even if you don't understand how. When I say "live with it" I mean live with the fact that the improvement is quick and dramatic, even if this goes against your suspicion of statistics and governments, not live with the fact that smoking is bad for you. I think we all know that by now. My argument on this thread is with the knee jerk need to believe in bad news, even when it's good news. It's why the Australians call us whinging Poms! I think as a nation it is one of our least attractive traits. There is plenty of genuinely bad news around without trying to turn good news in to bad news as well! Which I guess for a Brit makes me pretty weird!

Should the internet be policed?
Surely the internet is already policed. Many agencies track terrorism on the internet. Sting operations are carried out by the police against paedophiles. How can it be policed any further? About the only thing that may need improving is that sites like eBay and YouTube need to be more accountable for what appears on their sites. But I think this is slowly happening anyway. Sooner or later one of the businesses or individuals who are sueing these websites is going to have their day in court and cause a change in the "hands-off" way they operate.

Brown: I want Lady Thatcher portrait to hang in No 10
This is surely entirely political. Brown believes that he can pull a fast one on Cameron by siding with Thatcher. There are many disillusioned Tories who don't like Cameron's policies. Brown wants them to vote for him at the next General Election, and he doesn't care how far to the right he has to go to stay in power. The political parties used to be arranged from left to right: Labour > Liberal > Conservative Now it seems to be: Liberal Democrat > Conservative > New Labour Bizarre!

witchcraft.....
This "group" you were in. Were they scientists? Or people who already believed in "forces" and "auras"? If you were blindfolded how do you know they weren't just moving out of your way? Hardly scientific! You should have set up a video camera to record the results. Or had independent observers (scientists or otherwise) to note the results. We humans have huge psychological effects on each other. Some of which are nigh on miraculous - as anyone who's watched Derren Brown at work will know. We are all open to suggestion and manipulation whether we think we are or not. The recent programmes by Richard Dawkins that you enthused about in another thread did a similar thing with water diviners. As soon as you apply the scientific method all of their powers seem to evaporate! Believe in "auras" and "forces" if you want to. As I said in my first post in this thread, "As with religion, either you believe or you don't. I don't." I tend to side with Derren Brown and Richard Dawkins, rather than Derek Acora and Obi Wan Kenobi!

scotlands smoking ban....
I guess this is a statistic too. So you won't believe this one either. Were the statistics government ones? Scottish Health Service ones? You don't know because the original post doesn't say. But you've decided they're govt. ones so it's easier to disbelieve them. (I am no truster of statistics or politicians either - believe me!) I think the chief point you are all struggling with is actually just how bad smoking is for you. Health improves immeasurably and immediately someone stops smoking. So you shouldn't be surprised that a smoking ban leads to good news - because it has happened everywhere a smoking ban has been applied. A smoking ban is always good news for the population it is applied to regardless of how manipulative the government who introduces it might be! As I said before - live with it!

scotlands smoking ban....
In my earlier post I wondered about the small number of replies this thread had had. I assumed it was because people prefer to whinge about bad news than even see any good news. I was right. So desperate are they for bad news that Bry and ICR choose not to believe it. It must be Scottish joggers. Ha! Or the figures must have been manipulated. Just enjoy some good news for once! Smoking is catastrophically bad for our bodies in so many ways. Any reduction in smoking is going to lead to improved health figures. Live with it!
