witchcraft.....
My money's on The Daily Mail.

witchcraft.....
Scientific tests have been done on the human brain that prove that we use most of it all the time. The "80% unused" is a very old myth long discredited. In 1935 a scientist called Karl Spencer Lashley had been experimenting on rats and concluded that up to half of their brain could be destroyed without changing their ability to learn. Assumptions were made about all brains based on this. In the 40s in America a place called The Pelman Institute ran ads for self-improvement courses which said "What's holding you back? Just one fact - one scientific fact. That is all. Because, as science says, you are using only one-tenth of your real brain power!" And so the myth grew. Nowadays we have CAT, PET and MRI scans which prove that there are NO inactive regions of the brain - even when we're asleep! See what I mean about not believing what you don't want to believe whether it's been scientifically proved or not? Sorry, I'm starting to sound like Stephen Fry or Richard Dawkins!

T-Rex
Thanks for the heads-up on this. Didn't know it was on! Worth seeing for all the old footage.

Cover Voting Thread
I thought maybe this was true when I first joined, but I'm fairly convinced now that it isn't he case. Covers like russt68's recent Manics and Editors examples were neither by artists popular on these boards (glossy babes) nor even featured pictures of the groups and yet they won (quite rightly too - they were great graphic design). Anyway here are my votes: 1. N (10 points) 2. A 3. M 4. K 5. Q 6. P 7. E 8. H 9. C 10. B

witchcraft.....
As with religion, either you believe or you don't. I don't. Scientific proof rarely changes beliefs so why bother? I'd rather see the money spent on something more important.

Actor guilty of child porn charges
Yes, upthread people were saying he would off lightly because he's a celebrity, but he's finished. It's precisely because he's a celebrity that the media aren't going to let him retire in ignominy, they are going to pursue him. He'll probably have to leave the country.

Wow! Now that is a great cover russt68!

Teen abortion epidemic
Nevertheless backstreet abortionists will be visited and pregnancies will be terminated if abortion is made illegal. "Reason" doesn't always come in to it. Yeah, dump it on the grandparents. What if there aren't any alive, or to be found? My sister had a baby at the age if sixteen. It was put up for adoption. I didn't realise at the time how much it affected her until years later when she phoned me one evening in floods of tears about it. She said that the baby girl had haunted her her whole life, even though she had subsequently got married and had other children. Thankfully the first thing that my unseen neice did when she was allowed to at the age of 18 was contact her mother (my sister), so some kind of closure was reached. The trouble is with your "reasoning" is that it never takes account of the ebb and flow of real life. It's all so reasonable but never very realistic.

24TH SEPTEMBER : predict
Er, you did a thread like this for 3rd of September. Is 3 weeks ages? Sugababes seem like the best bet for No. 1, unless Sean Kingston or 50 Cent prevent it. Iglesias, Melua and Penate have a chance at top 10. Can't see any of the others making the top 10.

Teen abortion epidemic
Strange title for a thread. Epidemic? Is abortion catching, like flu? Surely it's a teen pregnancy epidemic (except you can't catch pregnancy either). Teen pregnancy increase? Not really, teenage pregnancy has been the norm through most of human history. It's amazing to me that there aren't more teenage pregnancies (it's currently only 26 per 1,000 births). One might almost say it's not natural…

Learning the hard way we can’t teach yobs a lesson any more
Although the case is, of course, ridiculous, the nastiness of the article rather destroys the journalist's point "Reading that, you half wish the copper had dispensed with the bin and just thrown him headfirst into one of those giant metal-crushing machines that you see on the dilapidated outskirts of our cities, or into one of those enormous furnaces for toxic medical waste that may or may not lead to cancer clusters." So witty, so charming. "Just as we know that the scales of justice are tilted unfairly in favour of the asylum seeker who commits a crime and against his or her British-born victim." Rabble-rousing xenophobic, racist c**p "Later we wonder how come our young people seem intent on shooting one another" What, all of them? Stupid generalisation. This bigot sound like Richard Littlejohn or someone of that ilk. Pity really because the basic point is sound. I just find myself unwilling to ally myself with this obnoxious guff. If I were his child, throwing conkers at people would be the least of my antisocial problems!

obesity epidemic in the uk
Bizarrely you are the second person to proclaim their weight on this thread - and the second person to be slightly overweight! Your Body Mass Index is 25.23. It should be below 25 - so, to be fair, you're only just over! Anyone else want to criticize the overweight while being overweight themselves? Perhaps you should try the NHS's Body Mass Index Calculator here before you do! Oh, and in case you were wondering, my weight is 12 stone 2 pounds and I'm 5'11". My BMI is 23.71. :P

2. The Sultans Of Ping FC
I'm not sure if I like the sound of a "90s revival circuit" - it makes me feel so old!

scotlands smoking ban....
I'm assuming this thread hasn't had many replies because it's some good news for a change. We prefer bad news to whinge about - which is, of course, what the sensationalist tabloids provide.

Come on chaps - fingers out! There must be something you can do, even if you don't like the artist or song.

the shadows
Always liked 'Apache' - an early musical memory for me too as my parents owned a copy. Most of their stuff was just so insipid though - and they just seemed to get worse through the years..

1. The Beloved
The only one of theirs that really does it for me is 'The sun rising'. An absolute fave of mine from that era.

obesity epidemic in the uk
NHS services should always be free at the point of delivery - that's the whole point of having a National Health Service. We already pay for dental treatment and glasses. Let's not add more things to pay for. Education is the answer. It doesn't always work effectively but I don't think we should be victimising people for being overweight. (I'd have made this post earlier but I've just been for a 26 mile cycle run!)

obesity epidemic in the uk
I thought this myth had been exploded so many times now that nobody still believed it. Metabolism has nothing to do with it. If you eat more than you burn you'll get fat - simple as that. I assume that if you are fourteen and a half stone that you are several inches over six feet tall, otherwise your Body Mass Index is likely to prove you slightly overweight!
