UEFA Champions League Thread 2008/2009
If it was some sort of conspiracy why would he send off a player (defender at that) when the team 'set up' to go through were 1-0 down, there were 25 minutes left on the clock and Barca were making no good of the posession they had? Especially over something as innocuous as a tangle of legs between defender and attacker? It was an awful refereeing performance, just as the performance was awful the night before, and just as there will be many more awful performances in the future of the Champions League.

Barca will have Abidal & Alves missing for a start. Based on tonights performance I have full confidence United will win, Barca were incredibly sloppy at the back and Ronaldo will tear any of their back four to part, whether he is starting on the left, right or centre. Mr Messi can't seem to perform against the English teams either. It's actually baffling me that Barca are favourites to win this!

Well in relation to dodgy penalty decisions anyway, obvs not if he's referring to conceding penalties that shouldn't have been penalties.

What? Nah I think we knew that feeling precisely 6 days before the Spurs match when Danny Welbeck didn't get a penalty that would've arguably took us into the FA Cup Final..

Relegation predictor
Words cannot describe how much I'd love to see Newcastle go down. But I still think they'll escape. 18 Hull 19 Boro 20 WBA ...would be my pick. The Villa goal was a mile offside against Hull on Monday though so if they go down by 1 point or less then they've definitely had their stroke of bad luck at the wrong end of the season..

Nah the penalty decision was an absolutely awful one. From the referee's angle he could see the ball clearly moving directly in front of Fabregas and then it jolted out to his right. Heck it even bounced once in the outwardly direction before Fabs went to ground. All in all the ref had a bad game tonight. There was one spell after the penalty when we must've had roughly 6-8 passages of play whereby we'd have ball being kicked down the field > 'foul' on defender > freekick launched up to the other end of field > repeat. No ref should intervene that much. Apart from that minor note though I can't complain with the performance of United tonight. Rooney on the left is really impressing more than anyone in that side right now. And if we're 'peaking' in the Champions League atm then the final looks promising indeed.

You misunderstand what I was trying to say. I personally believe Folan was stupid to lash out and I'm far from condoning the behaviour (thuggish kicking like that shouldn't be allowed in any form of the game, esp in the sense that Pepe did for Real Madrid midweek) nor am I saying that he shouldn't have been given his marching orders. Just highlighting how the rub of the green didn't entirely favour United in the title race this weekend. Imo Liverpool got far more decisions in their favour that could've gone against them than United did. Mascherano again, not saying the freekick shouldn't have been given but it could easily HAVE gone in the opposite direction which sunsequently wouldn't have led to a goal. In relation to the point about Liverpool's backline, again I'm not disputing you've been solid at the back all season but right now you are weak at the back. I can't see how that can even be denied tbh. Reina was at schoolboy level yesterday, throwing the ball directly to the retreating Hull players, kicking the ball straight out of play or straight back to Hull players. He certainly wasn't commanding his back four either which any good goalkeeper should. Skrtel, like you say, has no confidence since Downing turned him over (wtf was he doing at right back that game anyway? =/ ) and there seems like there's little communication between any of the defense (difficult I know when you have an Argentine, 2 Spaniards, a Slovakian and a scouser but still..).

  I wonder if anybody actually watched the Liverpool match? It's a phrase that gets tossed about all over the show in this forum, but 'swings and roundabouts' is once again ringing true. Just as United got the penalty decision in their favour, so did Liverpool on the Skrtel-Folan tangle (a tangle which was almost mirrored later on in the match and given to the opposite team), Lucas' possible handball that was right in the thick of the action when Kuyt scored his second, the Mascherano freekick that led to Xabi Alonso's goal questioned as Mascherano was deemed to be on his way down before being tripped. In essence Liverpool could've had two of their three goals disallowed and a penalty given against them, as far as I'm aware United scored four clear cut goals that aren't really questionable at all (the Rooney goal that 'didn't cross the line' maybe the only doubt but surely anybody with eyes could see it crossed). Anybody trying to insinuate that Manchester United will win the title purely based on that penalty decision is, well, a bit dim. A season is played over 38 games. After watching both performances aswell it must be said that imo the 3-1 Liverpool result is much more flattering to them than 5-2 was to United. Liverpool were bloody terrible at the back, Skrtel is still in a dreamworld seemingly, Reina can't seem to kick straight thesedays and Arbeloa isn't up to the job clearly. 8 goals conceeded in 2 games prior to yesterday and a very shaky defensive performance against a team who've collected a grand total of 7 points from the last 17 games, very worrying indeed..

Are You Watching Merseyside??!
LOL WTF? We were poor? Yes the penalties were poor (as were the penalty choices, Gibson was the best striker of the ball on the field today, experience or no experience..) but for people who actually watched the FULL 120 minutes you would've seen how even and matched the two teams were. Fielding a starting XI that consisted of only two regular first team starters and yet going on to match Everton (a team that's set to cement it's fourth top six finish in five seasons, and knocked out a full-strength Liverpool team early in the comp as many of you LFC fans seem to have conveniently forgotten about  ). Yeah really poor.. Personally I'm more than happy with the performance of United's youngesters today and was impressed by many of them yet again. Anderson and Gibson were safe as houses in the centre of midfield, Rafael (and his twin Fabio prior to the injury) looked threatening from deep positions and Macheda showed more good touches despite not really having opportunities to finish. Oh well, onwards and upwards, back to concentrating on the Prem and the Champions League aye. Would like to wish Everton the best of luck against Chelsea too. I would much rather see another team away from the 'big four' win it for a second year running, it can only be good for the competitive nature of the cup and belief in the smaller clubs that they can actually go on to win the whole thing.

UEFA Champions League Thread 2008/2009
Good display from United tonight. Credit must go to Fergie as his team selection was spot on tonight. Just goes to show how solid our whole defensive backline is when Rio plays. John O'Shea (prone to the silliest of mistakes) had Hulk in his back pocket all night, Vidic was showing the world class form again that proves he's certainly one of, if not THE, best centre back in the world and Evra didn't do too much wrong despite the odd wild challenge. Rooney was sensational on the wing, Anderson did everything expected of him and the Ronaldo strike speaks for itself. We may not have put out the most exciting of performances but every man (minus maybe Berbatov) put everything into the match tonight and got the job done when it mattered, something extremely difficult against Porto esp at home. I'm more than happy with tonights performance but Arsenal can't be counted out for the semi's. Another good win and team performance from them tonight by all accounts. Nice to see we're guaranteed an English team in the ECL final for the fifth year running though, excellent advertisement for English football.

However credit where it's due, Liverpool played extremely well today. Didn't catch the last goal but Torres' goal was absolutely sublime and Agger's was a bit of a screamer too. Looking ahead now, here's hoping Stoke can hammer Newcastle in the late kick-off today and keep the black and whites firmly lodged in the bottom three.

Whilst I agree with some of your points (Ronaldo being absolutely useless, giving away 2 vital goals in 2 big matches, shouldn't have bought Berbatov in the first place) there are some seriously bizarre aspects of this post. Firstly SAF responded to Rafa's baffling rant at both SAF and MUFC as far as I could see. It was in no way unprovoked and Sir Alex certainly was not the one who rekindled this war of words. A rant that took place in preparation for Liverpool's calamitous performance aganist Chelsea that will no doubt end in them exiting the Champions League this year. A rant in which he talked about United being 'scared' of Liverpool. A rant in which he referenced them being within touching distance of United. Correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't Rafa be preparing for his CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (not premier league) tie that wasn't even against Manchester United but instead against Chelsea? And again as far as I could see this SAF 'rant' that you talk about was basically him saying pretty much the same as me. Why is Rafa so insistent on concentrating on Manchester United so close to a key fixture? "He's got a European tie (against Chelsea) and he's talking about Alex Ferguson. Fantastic! I didn't know I was that important!" He then went on to talk about Chelsea for the rest of the piece. That's a rant? LOL oh dear. Again the idea of United being obsessed with Liverpool shows its true colours. Secondly in regards to beating Villa, why would we not celebrate? Many saw it as the turning point that would boost our confidence for the remainder of the season (the Porto match says maybe that idea was flawed..), but to be losing 2-1 and then to come back to win it within the last ten minutes in such a crucial match, I think it would be something if Utd fans didn't celebrate like maniacs. Similarly, to celebrate in the same way Liverpool fans celebrated when they beat Utd. And proceeded in referencing the event weeks after the match had taken place. Both crucial events in the title race. To say that United fans are loosing it after celebrating such a big win is a bit

Only watched the second half but Chelsea played very well. Probably the best I've seen them since the start of the season, definitely the best I've seen them in 2009. I didn't see Cech challenged once prior to the Alonso shot right at the end, nor did I see Torres get a look in. Gonna be a very steep hill for Liverpool to climb now, 3 or more (presumably) at Stamford? Can't see it happening..

Bringing Kiko Macheda on for Nani will go down as one of Fergie's greatest tactical manoeuvres I reckon. I don't believe he was as instrumental as the pundits made out (I only saw him touch the ball about 3-4 times) prior to the goal but he pulled it out of the bag when it counted. Sublime turn & finish and a sublime ending to the match. That goal alone will give us so much confidence for Porto/Sunderland.
