Hi everyone
Seeing as Azerbaijan can qualify to enter Eurovision I want Australia to participate too. Eurovision is very popular in Australia here but it is very frustrating having to always sneak in by the back door
eg
- Johnny Logan (2 time winner) was born here in Melbourne
- Olivia Newton John represented the UK in 1974
- Jane Comerford representing Germany in 2006
- Gina G representing the Uk in 1996
The only problem is the rules around what constitutes Europe ie the European Broadcasting area.
from wikipedia...
The European Broadcasting Area is defined by the International Telecommunication Union as such:
The "European Broadcasting Area" is bounded on the west by the western boundary of Region 1, on the east by the meridian 40° East of Greenwich and on the south by the parallel 30° North so as to include the western part of the USSR, the northern part of Saudi Arabia and that part of those countries bordering the Mediterranean within these limits. In addition, Iraq, Jordan and that part of the territory of Turkey lying outside the above limits are included in the European Broadcasting Area.
The western boundary of "Region 1" is a line drawn west of Iceland down the centre of the Atlantic Ocean.
The boundaries of the European Broadcasting Area have their origin in the regions served and linked by telegraphy cables in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The European Broadcasting Area plays a part in the definition of eligibility for participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Seeing as Australia abuts France and Norway in Antarctica and New Caledonia (part of France) is one of our nearest neighbours (closer to France than Azerbaijan) I think the boundaries need to be redrawn to include Australia.
We want in!!!
cheers Peter
