A text competition via Kylie, spot the repeated note. The new release played was the next single by T2. In all, a pretty good show mainly non-stop, and not that many ads, or chat. Which was good. From what I hear Reggie, was not so good! Played 3 Rihanna`s, and missed This is the Life, with Amy McDonald...which of course was played by Lucio. Noticed on Hit40uk, the Hoosiers, obviously did not get enough combined airplay, to get in with flop Worse Case Scenario...even though airplay had it at number 5, in the national Radio/TV airplay chart.

Chart show tv...a week behind then! Maybe they can`t get a company to do a chart for them. OCC don`t like people even giving away, midweek positions. So they wouldn`t let them have one. Although the OCC, was originally known as CIN (Chart information network). They don`t actually compile the chart, the chart is researched by MILWARD BROWN (a research company) who do the adding up etc. The OCC (Official charts company) just support it, and distribute it etc. You may get stopped in the street, to do a survey, about products like hairsprays, make-up, fizzy drinks, or something...the survey, might be carried out by MILWARD BROWN who do the chart. Alternately, you might do a survey, for GALLUP, or the BRITISH MARKET RESEARCH BUREAU...all previous pop chart compilers! There are plenty of other market research companies...one day MILWARD BROWN could lose the contract, for the chart, and it could go to another. They have compiled the official chart since 1993. GALLUP did it between 1983 - 1993, and BRITISH MARKET RESEARCH BUREAU did it between Feb 1969 - Jan 1983. Before that no official chart existed, at all! The Chart Show started on Channel 4, in 1986 on Friday evenings. First of all it used MRIB`s chart, then when the Chart Show moved to ITV, on Saturdays, they used an in-house compiler. Meanwhile, on a Tuesday at 7pm, ITV launched the ROXY with DAVID JENSEN, which was ITV`s answer to TOP OF THE POPS (it lasted a couple of years, and disappeared) that was a TV version, of Independant radio`s the NETWORK CHART. The NEWS OF THE WORLD used to print the NETWORK (MRIB) Top 30, on a Sunday morning. Then later, they stopped doing so. The Sunday People, took up publishing the chart, shortly after (previously the People, printed the MELODY MAKER chart). Then, last November 25th, was the last time, a chart was featured in there. I don`t know, the set up, that Chart Show TV had, when downloads appeared, in the chart, Chart Show TV, seemed to go down the pan, with the Singles chart. The SMASH HITS CHART on EMAP stations, ran a combined download/sales/airplay chart, compiled by MRIB. When the programme finished in Sept 2006, the Sunday People MRIB chart, seemed to switch to physical sales, only...don`t know why. Most stations that took, the SMASH HITS CHART, now take HIT40UK (compiled by MILWARD BROWN and MUSIC CONTROL) with a total sales/download official top ten...and a combined airplay/sales/downloads 40 - 11 part of the chart. Other stations feature the A LIST, which is the best selling artists, of the week...not singles only, but albums, and other music related stuff. I do not know, anyone, who actually listens, to that one...never even see a chart, for it. I must find their website, sometime.

Yeah, I don`t get that album chart, at all. I noticed the Sunday People do not print charts, anymore. So, we can`t check the albums with that. Someone told me that the People didn`t renew a contract. I contacted the People, but got no reply. Maybe the albums, are only MSN sales too? Can`t comment on 3, Soulja Boy missing. Nickelback, not on MSN, can`t be right...I understand MSN, being different to the national download mids, because obviously MSN, is only a small percentage in the full/whole download sites etc...seems downloading Nickelback on MSN, ain`t happening! Got to be wrong, one asumes...

Its a combination of msn/mrib, up to Weds evening apparently based on msn sales only...I see what you mean about Nickelback, wonder if a mistake has been made? The albums definately have been messed up, to say the least, breaking off Tues. Singles obviously up to close of play, nationally yesterday.

Another week goes, and more charts. MSN/MRIB on an alliance it seems. This week, we have film charts, dvd charts, album charts, download charts, singles chart/or song chart, and a physical chart too. Teamed up with 1980, when the chart was much more likeable, and radio one, even played the Nolan Sisters, really!! Thanks to Dave Taylor (davericktaylor@yahoo.co.uk) for supplying this lot. Dave gave me this album chart, but either something is wrong with it, or it is out of date. Don`t forget to look out for NEXT WEEK`S CHART on Monday around 4pm, a weekly salute to Radio Luxembourg....where we visit 4 different well known stores, take 4 up to date download charts, take the airplay chart...add the lot together, and come up with the most up to minute singles chart...based on 40% physicals, 40% downloads, and 20% airplay. See how it looks on Monday, Basshunter were number 2, last Monday, and Britney at 5, so see how it ends up, this Monday at 4pm, alright!!

I think that downloads should still have only be included, when there was also a physical release available, to buy as well, like the 2006 ruling. It was slightly better. If people want to download old songs, then they should be disqualified, if there is no physical single version available, and that goes for album tracks, as well.

The thing is though Mikey, Capital, and Radio 2, are no better. Radio 2 is full of egos, and so called stars. Capital have their heads, in the clouds..Johnny Vaughn, the dreaded Lucio etc. You are right about over downloading the same tracks...I thoroughly believe, the same people download the same track every week, to keep it up there, it`s a farce all right. The truth about radio today is, you will struggle to find a decent station. I slipped into local radio in the early 90s, it began to slide shortly after (hopefully not my thought)!!! But then Local stations used to be virtually able, to play what the people wanted...Then these playlists, of overplayed material turned up...producers saying we want you to plug this, radio bosses, telling you what to say, even scripting shows. I got out of Local radio in 2004. All I do now is a bit of Hospital radio, now and then...where the people are always first, because they only can be.

Only the people that listen or buy the trash, in the first place are to blame. Radio one returned to be the top chart show in 2004, not because it was the best one..but because various radio groups, started their own shows..the Smash Hits Chart ran on Emap stations, the A list turned up elswhere, and Hit40uk launched. Airplay, is to blame for a lot, biased stations Radio One, Capital etc...ageist stations (the lot of them)..won`t play Status Quo, Cliff, or whoever! Every song in the top 200, should be on all stations playlists, then the biased c**p, that appears week after week, would not happen, at all! The chart would reflect a vast amount of age groups different tastes...there`s the problem! If Radio one`s audience fell to an all time low, something might be done!

The Internet has not destroyed the top 40, Radio One have done that on their own, since 2003! All radio one, have done since 1984, is copy ideas brought in by Independant Radio. They copied Kid Jensen, in 1984, by running down the last ten songs, before the top 30, top 20, and top 10...Independant Radio`s idea. The Network Chart played the chart on a Sunday as new by MRIB. Radio One, then entered into talks to get the Gallup chart, new on Sundays. The Network Chart, played the whole top 30 every week, with 3 bubblers/new releases featured. Radio One launched Chartbusters to play guess what...new releases! Then in 1991, like the Network Chart, they decided to play the full top 40! Independant Radio, introduced Neil Fox, and the Pepsi Chart in Aug 1993, with competitions etc...surprise, surprise Radio One started having competitions. The Pepsi Chart have guests talking about their hits...Radio One copied again! Then the Pepsi Chart became Hit40uk, interactive with the listener...Radio One copied again! The Pepsi Chart filled up with even more chart chat...Radio One copied again, by missing out half the chart!! The Pepsi Chart was the first chart show to have 2 presenters together...Radio One copied yet again! Maybe they might catch on, that Hit40uk, has now stopped chatting so much, not running many comps, and playing the chart (yes) in full!!

Good Afternoon Mikey, twas a busy week with my birthday yesterday, and a plumbers bill to boot! How much down/up from Sun, on Valerie - Ronson/Winehouse, T2, Alicia Keys, and Shes So Lovely - SFG? Thankyou for all your great work...

Well on the name badge thing...If I remember from my manager days, while stocking the shelfs etc, you end up with lots of waste cardboard/paper/plastic etc...now the store where I worked was large, when it was known as F.W. Woolworth (the original, man who founded the company). We used to have to take the waste etc, to the loading areas, where we had to operate compactors, and cutters for card, and stuff...it was deemed dangerous to wear Jewellery, loose fitting clothes (i.e. ties) and name badges (that may come undone) and get stuck in moving parts of various apparatus. Which certainly has its points. There was a case (not Woolies) where a chap got his arm stuck in a compactor because his badge, fell off, and got stuck between the mechanism, of a machine that was in operation! Very ghastly, that was. Name badges, have a lot to answer for...take another example, in a shop like Sainsburys, they have Bakeries/restaurants...now they tell you you are not allowed to wear any jwellery...but they tell you, that you must always wear a name badge. Correct me, but isn`t a name badge, similar to jewellery? Is that stupid or what! I know what you mean about not being allowed to play certainn songs in the shop...Take PINK and GET THE PARTY STARTED, we had a complaint (again not Woolies) where a woman was apparently offended when Pink, sings "Kissing My Arse"....Strange enough, no one complained when we played "JET`AIME MOI NON PLUS by JUDGE DREAD!! How about that!!

Sounds about right. Be careful though! I was a manager once in Woolies..in those days, it was deemed not safe, to wear name badges, because some "strange" person, might get your full name, and find you, in the phone book, and even stalk you....it was dodgy! Always make sure your name badge only has your first name, on it. And do not operate machinery with it on either. I still reckon name badges should be put in the waste bin, actually. I would never had my staff wear them, for loads of reasons, even health and safety. What are your rules these days?

You must have better Woolies, in Scotland then! Most in England are absolutely limited/small...and the staff, are they okay?

Might be a while before you get another "Guiness Book". Contracts etc, have run out, and there definately won`t be a book this year. I am currently co-producing a book on the "original" charts of the 50s and 60s, that will cover the 56 - 69 period. As been said before Guiness` idea of using Record Retailer 60 - 69, was a bad one, because no one followed Record Retailer charts then because the poll of shops was too small...we will be concentrating on Melody Maker, NME, Disc, and the original BBC charts, hopefully copyright will pass through.

Yeah, it was the airplay we included that pushed the both Hoosiers and Mika in. Maybe should not have used airplay too, but it was the Luxembourg way, so it is true to the originals!!! I remember an instance on Luxembourg, on the 25th Jan 1983, their top 20, had LARGARJITA NICK by BAUHAUS at number 17...on the official chart, it got no higher than number 44!! So, the Hoosiers position, ain`t nothing! Actually, I think the top 5 is doing rather well, if nothing else. Maybe Mika, will remain inside the OCC top 20, on Sunday, who knows? :)

Yep, and on Smash Hits tv, and Chart show tv...and in the Radio airplay top 10. Not being stocked physically by some shops, such as Woolworths. But on the racks on HMV...What`s happened? Maybe not a stronger enough song.

I was thinking, "the older generation" i.e. the over 50s etc...obviously I wouldn`t expect them, to buy singles, but what does the "older" person listen too? I was brought up in a family, that were all much older than me (being a child, to a mother and father, in their 40s, even then). So, obviously I was basically brought up on easy listening, on the original sound of Radio 2, in the early days. Certainly in the early - mid 70s, they were bashing out Sinatra, Bill Haley etc, but what do people over 50 listen too, today? There isn`t really any national stations, around to cater for them. Certainly not todays Radio 2!! I suppose Smooth Radio, is on the edge of "easy listening", but they don`t stick to that type of music at all, playing Springsteen, and other rockier people. So what does the average 50plus or older person actually listen too, in 2008? Do they even buy albums, currently in the charts? The single track is most certainly becoming a younger persons game, via downloads etc. So, an age gap is rapidily appearing in the music genre.

It makes you laugh, when they stick their own singles chart on the wall...and then don`t bother stocking singles, anyway, which is just plain stupid. The physical should be iven more exposure. The download chart, is heading for a takeover bid. It`s a sad day, and no mistake.

I suppose it could be described as almost equivalent, but the top 10, on Hit40uk, will always be the same as the Official chart, because airplay is only counted in the 40 - 11 segment, of the chart, it is basically 50/50 on sales/airplay in that sector. No pre-released track, can be featured if it is not on any independant radio stations playlist. Unfortunately, it is just the story of Independant radio`s airplay...the number 11, is usually the most played track on Independant radio, that week. On the whole, the MRIB charts (when used, on air) were much better. With only a 5% of airplay added. Hit40uk, is compiled by music control/Milward Brown (OCC).

Hey Jonny, the programme itself, (the KCFM, one) went out on many local stations networks, previously. But many dropped it, there was a bit of 'over dramatised' news on Sean Tilley`s personal life, in the press...that may have been why some took, it off. Sean, himself broadcasted on BigL (Radio London) on A.M. and Satellite, until October 07. But he doesn`t turn up, there these days (which is a shame, because Sean, is a great presenter). He currently does a breakfast show, in Gloucester. The Hull show (KCFM) is still on, and indeed still taken by OASIS FM, in Tenerife...it is only vintage countdowns, that are broadcasted though, from 1966 - 1991.
