The Story of the BBC Charts
Just for clarification, we have already explained that the Official Chart started, when DEREK CHINNERY etc, formed an alliance with the BRITISH MARKET RESEARCH BUREAU, in 1969 (when Record Retailer, also put some money in) to begin a more accurate chart on 11th Feb 69. There is no point of talking about official charts before 1969, when there wasn`t one (it just happened to be that the GUINESS Team, JO RICE, TIM RICE and PAUL GAMBACCINI just decided to use Record Retailer from 1960, because it`s chart used a top 50, when all the others at the time, were only using a top 20, or 30. So, I am not going to enter, into an argument, about non-existent official charts. It`s surposed to be a thread on BBC Charts, after all.

The Story of the BBC Charts
As I noticed our very good friend Mykka, has updated the number 2s recently, I thought, why don`t I list the number 2s from the original BBC charts? The new mrib chart w/k ending 16/11
Its whats called Contempory...in the early 80s, SOUNDS (a music paper, similar to NME) featured the charts in the same way also from MRIB. SOUNDS itself broke away from the usual charts until April 84, when it began to print the pop charts from MRIB itself. It should be noted though that the actual albums and singles charts, in SOUNDS did not match with independant radio`s NETWORK CHART because there wasn`t any airplay data used in the SOUNDS chart.

Top 75 Singles and Albums
I had some info, on this yesterday, but I forgot to put it on the MRIB info...KEANE should have been 23, on that chart, but we try to stay most upto date as possible, so we took it out. It seems a fore-gone conclusion, that it should be somewhere between 19 and 27, in the Official chart...thats what we have come up with, anyway!!

The New MRIB charts w/k ending 9/11/07
Remember in the Official chart last weekend, the LIVE LOUNGE sold over 64,000, more than the HOOSIERS, who were on 55,000+. So, the LIVE LOUNGE sales a little less than half that in MRIB`s albums. We obviously won`t find out if it beats Britney, on the official chart, until we get details of the compilations, from Mikey and co, on Monday. Personally, I curse the day that compilations were excluded from the main chart, (these days they are virtually ignored by MUSIC WEEK and RADIO ONE

Extra Vintage (This week in 1956)
Being 12 years younger than you Rob, old boy!! I know all but 2, I`m vague on AUTUMN CONCERTO,(which was a instrumental I believe) and I seem to have forgotten the Donegan double A side! Did you regularly listen to JIMMY SAVILE circa 1973 - 84 (all the charts between 56 - 59, were featured), so we must have heard them, even being to young/not born the first time around!

ITV Sitcoms of the ‘70s’ and ‘80s’
I agree with everything you say, Naomi. I think writers/tv bosses, are too way scared, incase (the non-existent pc brigade) complain. Its nice too know, they are still laughing down under. UK comedies, certainly did well in Australia, Many versions, of uk comedies...were remade there such as, DOCTOR DOWN UNDER, FATHER DEAR FATHER, LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR in the late 70s, even THE TWO RONNIES, DAVE ALLEN, PETER COOK and DUDLEY MOORE, BENNY HILL did their own new series there, when dumped by BBC/ITV. I believe JOHN INMAN did a different series based around ARE YOU BEING SERVED (the story being he transferred to an Aussie store)...and scripts for BLESS THIS HOUSE, were reworked for HOME SWEET HOME. Long live the greats! Did you get ITV shows like KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY and FULL HOUSE over there? Both were JOHNNIE MORTIMER/BRIAN COOKE comedies 1980 - 84.

New MRIB CHARTS W/K ending 2/11/07
Thanks Jonny, the two charts were very close, this week (well the top 25, anyway, apart from N`DUBZ, who`s sales slipped through the week. The Courteeners, also suffered a sales slip, through the week, starting out in the top 30, on Mikey`s midweek info. Will lookout for Young Knifes, next week. Got the retro chart to double up with too, thanks to an email that came quickly through. What year were you born Jonny? We might slip it in, one week! Is it 1994? If so, what month?

ITV Sitcoms of the ‘70s’ and ‘80s’
I believe that ANTON RODGERS was actually living in France, in 1989, when this spin off began..thats why it was re-named etc. Thames tv, joined forces, with French tv, to write it. Personally, I think the French show, was dire! Not a patch on Fresh Fields. Mainly, because the main characters of Sonia, Guy, and Hester`s mother were not in it. Really, they made the programme, what it was. Of course FRESH FIELDS was originally taken off, because stupid tv bosses, put it on a Thursday evening, up against Eastenders...what a stupid move!!! So, it lost viewers, from a peak of 10million down to just 1.5million. I suddenly thought of LORRAINE CHASE (Emmerdale, these days). Remember the LWT sit-com, THE OTHER `ARF (1979 - 82), and again 1987? That was pretty lame...then of course she did LAME DUCKS in 1984, on BBC2...a sitcom that involved a group of social outcasts, who all lived in one house! There was a bloke, who was planning to travel around Britain, on this giant ball, and lots of other strange people!

RADIO LUXEMBOURG, didn`t start to play the record charts, until January 1960, when they played NME`s top 20. RADIO CAROLINE played the top 50 MELODY MAKER chart from April 64 onwards. No stations even bothered with the RECORD RETAILER chart (with the lowest number of shops, polled). DIANA by PAUL ANKA was the first million seller of the 50s. Only two records in the 40s surpassed 900,000 copie, these were WHITE CHRISTMAS - BING CROSBY, in 1942 and THE HARRY LIME THEME - ANTON KARAS, in 1949. Since 1942, BING CROSBY has sold around 1.2million copies of WHITE CHRISTMAS, but the exact number of sales is hard to assertain. YOURS by VERA LYNN would have been the second biggest seller of 1942, behind BING. Previous to the 40s, these recordings, are said to have sold just under 900,000 copies... OH FOR THE WINGS OF A DOVE - ERNEST LOUGH (in 1927) COHEN ON THE TELEPHONE - JOE HAYMAN (in 1914) LAUGHING SONG - BERT SHEPARD (in 1910) Biggest selling albums before 1956, are all provided by MANTOVANI, with four million selling L.P`s in 3 years!!!

The Story of the BBC Charts
It is possible to list an averaged list of number ones from 1955 onwards. Which I will do, as the BRITISH FORCES BROADCASTING NETWORK did from the Spring of 1956, beating the BBC by 18 months!! So, hang around!! Why didn`t GUINESS put the BBC chart in the books? No idea!! Actually, they should do a book, that includes the positions of records, for all the published charts between 1952 - 1969...and even delve back to the sheet music charts, that were around in Britain, even before the war!!
-
NME to cease publication?
DISC folded in 1975, and was bought out by RECORD MIRROR. So many have folded over the past 20 years. The first to go was SOUNDS which originally featured the Radio 1 chart, but later used MRIB`s data without the airplay data (used by independant radio)...after that RECORD MIRROR went, incorporated into MUSIC WEEK...MELODY MAKER went, now owned by NME!! In the 60s, POP WEEKLY closed in the Spring of 1966 (that used the EMI chart, which also finished in April 66...At that point, suddenly an album chart appeared in DISC AND MUSIC ECHO (the last music paper to feature an album chart, following MELODY MAKER in 58, RECORD MIRROR in 56, and NME in 62.

ITV Sitcoms of the ‘70s’ and ‘80s’
FRESH FIELDS was ITV`s answer to TERRY AND JUNE...ANTON RODGERS and JULIA MCKENZIE as husband and wife, kids have moved out. Hester (JULIA MCKENZIE) lets her granny flat in the garden to her mother. The mothers ex husband turns up quite a bit (played by BALLARD BERKLEY(the major from FAWLTY TOWERS)..There next door neighbour is always popping round and sayiny "its only Sonia"...some of the storyline was nicked for BBC`s 2P0OINT 4 CHILDREN..because the neighbour and Hester, do a catering thing. There was a Christmas special, that was absolutely hilarious...but so similar to a Christmas edition of TERRY AND JUNE!
