  2. Here we go with another end of week, look at the charts. Taking a look at the latest top films, dvds, albums, and singles/tracks. Dave will, of course complete the thread with the top singles (courtesy of Chart Show TV, and today`s added sales info. All this, and also a look back to May 1980. Let`s start with the top films, this week... w/k ending 30th May 08 01 01 IRON MAN 02 02 WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS 03 03 FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL 04 05 MIM`S ISLAND 05 04 SPEED RACER 06 07 MADE OF HONOR 07 06 DOOMSDAY 08 08 IN BRUGES 09 NE SUKKAR BANAT 10 09 21 3 weeks at number one, for IRON MAN netting £12,996,686 in those 3 weeks. Wouldn`t it be great to earn that in 3 weeks?! (The top films are compiled by Screen International, for UK Box office). Here are the top dvds, this week... w/k ending 30th May 08 01 NE P.S. I LOVE YOU 02 NE ALIEN VS PREDATOR 2-REQUIEM 03 01 I AM LEGEND 04 03 GOLDEN COMPASS 05 02 CHARLIE WILSON`S WAR 06 NE IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH 07 07 RUN FAT BOY RUN 08 NE MR MAGORIUM`S WONDER EMPORIUM 09 04 ST TRINIANS 10 06 STARDUST P.S. I LOVE YOU, had 72,239 takers this week. Which was a total combined with buyers and rentals. (The top dvds, are compiled by a combination of mrib/Blockbuster rentals) On we go, with the top 20 albums, this week... w/k ending 30th May 08 01 NE WE STARTED NOTHING - TING TINGS 02 01 HOME BEFORE DARK - NEIL DIAMOND 03 05 ROCKFERRY - DUFFY 04 03 JUMPING ALL OVER THE WORLD - SCOOTER 05 NE MINISTRY OF SOUND PRESENTS: CHILLED - VARIOUS 06 NE R + B COLLECTION - VARIOUS 07 02 IN SILICO - PENDULUM 08 NE LITTLE DREAMER - BETH ROWLEY 09 04 HARD CANDY - MADONNA 10 06 CLUBLAND CLASSIX - VARIOUS 11 07 NOW 69 - VARIOUS 12 NE CHANT - CISTERCIAN MONKS 13 11 SCOUTING FOR GIRLS - SCOUTING FOR GIRLS 14 09 CREAM 15 YEARS - VARIOUS 15 08 MY OWN WAY - JAY SEAN 16 NE BEST OF - NEIL DIAMOND 17 13 DAVE PEARCE DANCE ANTHEMS - VARIOUS 18 14 LESSONS TO BE LEARNED - GABRIELLA CILMI 19 17 BACK TO BLACK - AMY WINEHOUSE 20 NE TRIBUTE TO BOBBY - MICK HUCKNALL TING TINGS, easily beat NEIL DIAMOND this week, but Neil has two albums in the top 20. (The album chart, is compiled from stores/download sites up to, and including Wednesday night). Meanwhile, let`s look at May 1980... Starting with the albums then w/k ending 31st May 1980 01 01 THE MAGIC OF - BONEY M 02 02 SKY 2 - SKY 03 03 GREATEST HITS - ROSE ROYCE 04 09 OFF THE WALL - MICHAEL JACKSON 05 NE JUST ONE NIGHT - ERIC CLAPTON 06 22 ME MYSELF I - JOAN ARMATRADING 07 06 DUKE - GENESIS 08 NE MCCARTNEY 2 - PAUL MCCARTNEY 09 NE SPORTS CAR - JUDY TZUKE 10 07 12 GOLD BARS - STATUS QUO 11 NE I JUST CAN`T STOP - THE BEAT 12 11 HEAVEN AND HELL - BLACK SABBATH 13 14 ONE STEP BEYOND - MADNESS 14 08 GREATEST HITS - SUZI QUATRO 15 NE FLESH AND BLOOD - ROXY MUSIC 16 13 REGATTA DE BLANC - POLICE 17 NE MAGIC REGGAE - VARIOUS 18 NE CHAMPAGNE AND ROSES - VARIOUS 19 12 HYPNOTISED - UNDERTONES 20 20 SNAKES AND LADDERS - GERRY RAFFERTY Imagine seeing BONEY ME, at number one, 28 years on...damn near impossibility! By 1980 though, BONEY M`s singles were drying up. "MY FRIEND JACK", just graced the top 60, for them in May 1980. The proper singer of the group (LIZ MITCHELL) lives not far away, from me. SKY hit the big time, as a turn on Classical Rock. Again, ROSE ROYCE were beginning to dry up, on the singles front...but the Greatest Hits album, kept them in the top three. MICHAEL JACKSON`s fore-runner to "THRILLER", (OFF THE WALL), was bouncing up and down most of the year. ERIC CLAPTON was proving himself, a more album man...than a singles one. Both JUDY TZUKE, and JOAN ARMATRADING dabbled with a few singles, but the albums always did better for them too. Compilations were not doing so good...MAGIC REGGAE was just like it said,,,a Reggae oldie album. CHAMPAGNE AND ROSES was a 1950s compilation, featuring ballads, like AL MARTINO, PEREZ PRADO, and MEL TORME. Outside the top 20 was, "TELL ME ON A SUNDAY", by MARTI WEBB (but it was chiefly a soundtrack, to the Lloyd Webber musical). GOOD MORNING AMERICA was another VA comp, at 21 and BOBBY VEE (in the album charts, currently) was down 15 places to 25, with his Singles Collection. Do we remember 1980`s singles chart? w/k ending 31st May 1980 01 02 NO DOUBT ABOUT IT - HOT CHOCOLATE 02 01 WHAT`S ANOTHER YEAR - JOHNNY LOGAN 03 10 THEME FROM MASH - THE MASH 04 03 SHE`S OUT OF MY LIFE - MICHAEL JACKSON 05 05 MIRROR IN THE BATHROOM - THE BEAT 06 07 OVER YOU - ROXY MUSIC 07 20 WE ARE GLASS - GARY NUMAN 08 25 RAT RACE/RUDE BOYS OUTA JAIL - SPECIALS 09 06 HOLD ON TO MY LOVE - JIMMY RUFFIN 10 04 GENO - DEXY`S MIDNIGHT RUNNER 11 19 FOOL FOR YOUR LOVING - WHITESNAKE 12 14 LET`S GO ROUND AGAIN - AVERAGE WHITE BAND 13 21 YOU GAVE ME LOVE - CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR 14 11 DON`T MAKE WAVES - THE NOLANS 15 30 FUNKY TOWN - LIPPS INC. 16 29 CRYING - DON MCLEAN 17 08 I SHOULD`VE LOVED YA - NARADA MICHAEL WALDEN 18 09 COMING UP - PAUL MCCARTNEY 19 26 LET`S GET SERIOUS - JERMAINE JACKSON 20 23 YOU`LL ALWAYS FIND ME IN THE KITCHEN AT PARTIES - JONA LEWIE 21 28 BACK TOGETHER AGAIN - ROBERTA FLACK/DONNY HATHAWAY 22 18 JUST CAN`T GIVE YOU UP - MYSTIC MERLIN 23 49 I`M ALIVE - ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA 24 NE D-A-A-NCE - LAMBRETTAS 25 31 MIDNIGHT DYNAMOS - MATCHBOX 26 15 BREATHING - KATE BUSH 27 37 POLICE AND THIEVES - JUNIOR MERVIN 28 13 THE GROOVE - RODNEY FRANKLIN 29 12 SILVER DREAM MACHINE - DAVID ESSEX 30 41 MESSAGES - ORCHESTRAL MANOUEVRES IN THE DARK Now, HOT CHOCOLATE failed to have an official number one...but did make it two charttoppers elsewhere. Here they were with a RECORD BUSINESS number one. "NO DOUBT ABOUT IT", was based on a UFO sighting that lead singer ERROL BROWN saw, while he drove home through a woodland area, one night. MASH was the theme from the best ever US tv series...JOHNNY LOGAN won Eurovision the first time for Ireland (he won the second time, in 1987). Of course Ireland, had won 10 years earlier with the lovely DANA. GARY NUMAN, was still doing good...and absoloutely was addicted to (guess what?)....Toast!! He always had bread delivered to his hotel rooms! The ska revival continued, with the likes of THE SPECIALS and the BEAT. DON MCLEAN returned to the top, eight years after his first number one in 1972 (Crying was a re-make of a 1961 ROY ORBISON minor hit). JIMMY RUFFIN returned to top ten success, after 10 years...WHITESNAKE rocked, and the AVERAGE WHITE BAND scored their first hit in 4 years, sounding very American (but coming from Scotland). THE NOLANS were not making waves...CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR had probably the best ever disco song, I think. MATCHBOX and LAMBRETTAS brought back Rock-a-billy. JONA LEWIE had been the vocalist (as Terry Dactyl) on "SEASIDE SHUFFLE" in 1972, and loved being in the kitchen! JERMAINE JACKSON joined STEVIE WONDER for "LET`S GET SERIOUS". ROBERTA FLACK returned with the late DONNY HATHAWAY (again Roberta had her first uk hit in 1972). PAUL MCCARTNEY was not coming up...he was going down! OMD scored their first hit, and outside the top 30, was my favourite MANHATTEN TRANSFER hit..."TWILIGHT ZONE-TWILIGHT ZONE" at 33, UK SUBS were 32 with "TEENAGE", PETER GABRIEL had "NO SELF CONTROL" at 34, and the COCKNEY REJECTS were "FOREVER BLOWING BUBBLES", at 35. Stick around, for Mr Dave Taylor`s round-up of the big 50 this week in 2008. And also, thanks for everyone who continues to read, the thread every week...the number that reads it...grows every week! Dave will be here, shortly...

I know Dave, already mentioned about Evelyn "Champayne" King in 1978, but as she entered the chart on Tues 9th May 78...look at this chart run: 72-54-63-51-55-57-59-50-42-50-39-49-43-44-60-59-56-53-49-53-48-57-60 = 23 weeks! "Shame", only had one week in the top 40 (11 weeks after it entered the top 75) and hung around from May - October 78. So it has to be the longest chart run, not to make the top 30. What an amazing feat, this really was. Chart run courtesy of Record Mirror 1978.

Best hit not too make the top 40, in 78/79 Gerard Kenny and "New York New York (So Good They Named it Twice)". 8 weeks in the top 75, only got to 42...thrown out of Melody Maker`s chart because of chart hype allegations, when it smashed in at number 30 on the week of release!

I totally agree. To be honest I think Rihanna, is rather over-rated and as an all-round singer, not exactly that great. Even though good to look at. Though I always struggle to find a decent female singer anyway. I do prefer British girl singers.

There was some closeness between Rihanna and Ting Tings today, on the singles front. However downloads for Rihanna, are at a big high for her. With the physical out too, she must take the crown come Sunday.

Monday, and the boys have been busy checking what could happen next Sunday by adding pre-orders, Sun/Mon Sales locally in the South-East to come up with some idea. We checked out the likes of HMV, Woolworths, Smiths, Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Play.com, Amazon.co.uk. Starting with the albums (last week, we had 27 in the 30, 18 in the 20 and 9 in the 10). So today, we found this preview... 01 NE WE STARTED NOTHING - TING TINGS 02 01 HOME BEFORE DARK - NEIL DIAMOND 03 03 ROCKFERRY - DUFFY 04 06 JUMPING ALL OVER THE WORLD - SCOOTER 05 04 IN SILICO - PENDULUM 06 05 HARD CANDY - MADONNA 07 NE BETH ROWLEY - LITTLE DREAMER 08 NE TRIBUTE TO BOBBY - MICK HUCKNALL 09 NE DEFINITIVE OSMONDS COLLECTION - OSMONDS 10 07 CLUBLAND CLASSIX - VARIOUS 11 NE MINISTRY OF SOUND PRESENTS CHILLED - VARIOUS 12 13 SCOUTING FOR GIRLS - SCOUTING FOR GIRLS 13 08 NOW 69 - VARIOUS 14 09 CREAM 15 YEARS - VARIOUS 15 26 LESSONS TO BE LEARNED - GABRIELLA CILMI 16 NE R + B COLLECTION - VARIOUS 17 11 DAVE PEARCE TRANCE ANTHEMS - VARIOUS 18 12 SAM SPARRO - SAM SPARRO 19 NE CHANT - CISTERCIAN MONKS 20 14 MY OWN WAY - JAY SEAN 21 NE VERY BEST OF - JOHNNY RAY 22 22 BACK TO BLACK - AMY WINEHOUSE 23 NE STOP DROP AND ROLL - FOXBORO HOTTUBS 24 NE BEST OF - NEIL DIAMOND 25 18 SMASH HITS 80s - VARIOUS 26 23 VERY BEST OF - PLATTERS 27 33 RAISING SAND - PLANT/KRAUSS 28 25 19 - ADELE 29 19 NOTHING BUT THE BEST - FRANK SINATRA 30 17 VERY BEST OF - THE SEARCHERS New outside the 30 are THEA GILMORE in the top 40, and ANDY ABRAHAM and SCARLET JOHANSSON both grace the lower part of a top 75. The OSMONDS proving popular with up and coming dates. Also good to see the late JOHNNY RAY, a greatest hits collection was long in happening. Johnny passed away some years ago. The deaf singer shared his birthday with both Rod Stewart and me. I can not sing though! What do you mean, neither can Rod?!!! Actually, on the trivia front JOHNNY RAY`s last hit "I`LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN" spent over 2 months in the chart in 1959/60, and only ever got to number 26! (Bearing in mind there was only a top 30, this is some feat, to be beaten. On the singles front, last week we had 10 in the 10, 18 in the 20, 27 in the 30, and 36 in the 40...again 4 downloads alone surprised us! So, today the preview thus... 01 10 TAKE A BOW - RIHANNA 02 03 THAT`S NOT MY NAME - TING TINGS 03 01 4 MINUTES - MADONNA 04 06 HEARTBREAKER - WILL I. Definately not! Outside the top 40, in the 50 there are a lot of downloads alone, with ALPHABEAT, INDINA MENZEL, FRATELLIS, and ZUTONS. The FUTUREHEADS, JUSTICE and AMY MACDONALD look like flopping in the top 75. Top tip for FRATELLIS "MISTRESS MABEL", on pre-orders alone already would be number 9! Let us finish with a look back to Radio Luxembourg`s Next Week`s Top 30, in 1974. As I see an OSMOND tribute, a-foot... Weds 22nd May 1974 01 01 SUGAR BABY LOVE - RUBETTES 02 06 THIS TOWN AIN`T BIGGER ENOUGH FOR THE BOTH OF US - SPARKS 03 04 SHANG-A-LANG - BAY CITY ROLLERS 04 05 NIGHT CHICAGO DIED - PAPER LACE 05 02 DON`T STAY AWAY TOO LONG - PETERS AND LEE 06 16 THERE`S A GHOST IN MY HOUSE - R. PETERS AND LEE (the late LENNY PETERS, DIANE still singing today) won OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS in 73, SHOWADDYWADDY won NEW FACES. Now I`m thinking did the RUBETTES originally appear on a talent show, or did I imagine they did? PAUL DA VINCI did the singing on "SUGAR BABY LOVE", but did not sing it on TOP OF THE POPS. ABBA, MOUTH AND MCNEIL, GIGLIOLA CINQUETTI and indeed our entry by OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN (LONG LIVE LOVE, out of this chart) were all the Eurovision smashes, of 74. THE OSMONDS tv series was on BBC1 Tuesdays at 7pm. I CAN`T STOP is a lesser heard hit. BRYAN FERRY (of ROXY MUSIC) covered a DOBIE GRAY 1965 hit. ALVIN STARDUST was married to actress LIZA GODDARD (who started her career in SKIPPY-THE BUSH KANGAROO). Want a THREE DEGREES joke? No, well hear goes anyway...At the latest THREE DEGREES concert, only SHEILA FERGUSON turned up...In the audience, everyone put on their coats and jackets...Well, It was minus 2 Degrees!!!! In May 74, Radio Luxembourg got 8 in the top 10, 18 in the 20, and 25 in the 30. Missing the ARROWS (who did the original of "I LOVE ROCK N` ROLL, the JOAN JETT hit in 1975), ISLEY BROTHERS, ELTON JOHN. CHARLIE RICH and LIMMIE AND THE FAMILY COOKIN` had already dropped from Luxy`s top 30.
  8. Recorded by Hi-Breed in 1970, and a hit in the States for King Harvest in 1973.
  9. Absolutely Robbie. Dave was saying the other day that he thinks, physicals should be released on Fridays. Like they were between the 50s and mid 80s. He could have an idea, there. What do you think?
  10. I think if the physical versions, were released at the same time as the downloads, then the chart would be more speedier. So, would include more new entries. In which case Paramore and Cassie would then, I believe be in the top 40.
  11. trevs posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
And next week they will hold the number one album, without a doubt.
  12. Here is a quick Saturday Lunchtime update from Dave. Ashlee Simpson is heading down at the moment, from last night`s number 26 position, and Fall Out Boy have switched places with Utah Saints at 40 and 39 respectively. Nelly and Alphabeat have also switched places, at 19 and 18. Other than that, not much change at the top half of the top 50.
  13. Another Friday evening, with some more charts. We have the top films, dvds, albums, and Dave will complete with the singles. All that, and a look back to May 1992 as well. CURIOSITY dropped the KILLED THE CAT, and sang a 1974 JOHNNY BRISTOL top ten hit. MARC ALMOND sang DAVID MCWILLIAMS (a missed hit from 68). RICHARD MARX seemed to be forever on the Radio 2 playlist. We all loved 2UNLIMITED, didn`t we?! MICHAEL BALL was ONE STEP OUT of the EUROVISION SONG CONTEST, and lost. Dodgy titles around for LIONEL RICHIE and also the DEGREES OF MOTION hit. SIMPLY RED must have released most of the album, "STARS", on Single! The WEDDING PRESENT were still releasing a new single every month, for the whole of 1992. SHAKESPEAR`s SISTER had problems following up, "STAY", but the album HORMONALLY YOURS kept them going. My fav SISTERS OF MERCY crashed out of the top 40, down 36 places...but I was laughing at the time (because I can`t stand Michael Jackson, and he smashed down 22 places)!! Hang on for Mr Dave Taylor, who will put up his added sales, up to the minute singles chart shortly and a quick tribute to the anniversary of the Radio One top 40. So, hang around....

Don`t under estimate the team then Ben! ;) Tell you what, I think James definately did not think Scooter would hit even the top 3, last week...and of course it started the mids at no` 2, and took until Sunday to get to the top! Good Here, ain`t it!

Personally (having seen Neil "live" a couple of times) I would say that I, prefer him as a studio recording man. The "live" concerts, do not quite do the same thing for me. I am trying to think when Neil, was at his best...and I think that (for me) was his 1979 recording of "Forever In Blue Jeans" (money talks, but it don`t sing and dance and it don`t walk etc)!

Further down download only entries too for, TAIO CRUZ, VAMPIRE WEEKEND and WILL SMITH. Last week we got 37 in the 40, 29 in the 30, 16 in the 20, and 8 in the top 10...Not bad! In the albums 9 in the combined top 10, 16 in the 20, and 27 in the 30. We end today with a look back to 1978. Radio Luxembourg gave us this preview, on Tues 16th May 1978... 01 01 RIVERS OF BABYLON - BONEY M. 02 02 NIGHT FEVER - BEE GEES 03 03 TOO MUCH TOO LITTLE TOO LATE - JOHNNY MATHIS/DENIECE WILLIAMS 04 05 AUTOMATIC LOVER - DEE DEE JACKSON 05 07 BECAUSE THE NIGHT - PATTI SMITH GROUP 06 13 BOY FROM NEW YORK CITY - DARTS 07 04 NEVER LET HER SLIP AWAY - ANDREW GOLD 08 06 LET`S ALL CHANT - MICHAEL ZAGER BAND 09 NE LOVE IS IN THE AIR - JOHN PAUL YOUNG 10 NE IF I CAN`T HAVE YOU - YVONNE ELLIMAN 11 15 SHE`S SO MODERN - BOOMTOWN RATS 12 14 EVERYBODY DANCE - CHIC 13 10 JACK AND JILL - RAYDIO 14 19 DO IT DO IT AGAIN - RAFFAELLA CARRA 15 20 I`M ALWAYS TOUCHED BY YOUR PRESENCE DEAR - BLONDIE 16 NE MORE THAN A WOMAN - TAVARES 17 09 IF YOU CAN`T GIVE ME LOVE - SUZI QUATRO 18 NE NICE AND SLEAZY - STRANGLERS 19 NE HI TENSION - HI TENSION 20 16 BAD OLD DAYS - COCO Now in 1978, Luxembourg got 17 in the 20...missing with ROSE ROYCE and RUBY WINTERS. I remember 78, a lot because like Dave said yesterday, it was the first time Radio One followed the top 40 (increased from the top 30). It was also the first time we had a May Day Bank Holiday. The World Cup (in Argentina) with a theme provided by ROD ARGENT, "ARGENTINE MELODY" under the guise of SAN HOSE, for Rod. The Eurovision Song Contest was won by Israel, and IZHAR COHEN. Our entry came about 12th for COCO, featuring CHERYL BAKER (later of BUCK`s FIZZ fame). BECAUSE THE NIGHT and PATTI SMITH was a BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN penned song, RAYDIO was RAY PARKER JNR`s first outing. My favourite female singer YVONNE ELLIMAN struck another top tenner (the Hawaiian singer, who appeared in Jesus Christ Superstar) and sung I DON`T KNOW HOW TO LOVE HIM. Strange but true, my favourite British female singer PETULA CLARK also sang the very same song, in another production, 2 absolutely brilliant female acts with absoloute class, in my humble opinion. Don`t miss Yvonne singing "I CAN`T GET YOU OUT OF MY MIND", on Youtube...and Petula, with, "THE OTHER MAN`s GRASS. Great stuff! Here is some useless info to end with...The MICHAEL ZAGER BAND were number 8, in 78 with "Let`s All Chant", later done by PAT and MICK for charity, but ZAGER is a slang word for "watch", as in wrist watch! Bet you never knew that!
  17. The weekly look at what has been selling this week up to now. In tribute to the days of the now defunct MRIB Singles and Album Charts. Dave takes a look at charts, that will appear on Chart Show TV, and brings them up to date with sales, up to now. So, this week we have the top films and dvds, the latest singles and album charts, and slip back to May 1989, to see what was happening back then. Firstly, let`s take a look at the top films this week... 01 NE IRON MAN 02 01 FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL 03 NE NIM`S ISLAND 04 NE MADE OF HONOR 05 02 THE EVE 06 03 21 07 05 IN BRUGES 08 04 FOOLS GOLD 09 10 HAPPY GO LUCKY 10 NE PERSEPOLIS IRON MAN draws in £5,465,105 in a week! In a normal week the money made by the number 2 film, would have been enough to keep it at the top. (The top uk films are from the uk box office, curtesy of Screen International). Here are the top dvds this week... 01 NE GOLDEN COMPASS 02 01 I AM LEGEND 03 02 ST TRINIANS 04 NE HALLOWEEN 2008 05 03 ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 06 04 STARDUST 07 09 RATATOUILLE 08 05 RUN FAT BOY RUN 09 06 BALLS OF ARMS 10 07 THE INVASION A big fall in dvd rentals and sales this week (well we had some decent weather)!! 70,000 people either rented, or bought GOLDEN COMPASS. (The top uk dvds are compiled by a division of MRIB/Blockbuster). Here are the top albums... w/k ending 16th May 08 01 01 HARD CANDY - MADONNA 02 NE JUMPING ALL OVER THE WORLD - SCOOTER 03 07 ROCKFERRY - DUFFY 04 04 CLUBLAND CLASSIX - VARIOUS 05 06 NOW 69 - VARIOUS 06 08 CREAM 15 YEARS 07 NE SONGS FROM THE SPARKLE LOUNGE - DEF LEPPARD 08 02 THIRD - PORTISHEAD 09 05 SAM SPARRO - SAM SPARRO 10 11 DAVE PEARCE TRANCE ANTHEMS - VARIOUS 11 NE SMASH HITS 80S - VARIOUS 12 NE MUSIC FOR THE ACCELERATED CULTURE - HADOUKEN 13 03 AGE OF UNDERSTATEMENT - LAST SHADOW PUPPETS 14 09 KONK - KOOKS 15 13 SCOUTING FOR GIRLS - SCOUTING FOR GIRLS 16 15 19 - ADELE 17 10 SPIRIT - LEONA 18 12 ADDICTED TO BASSLINE - VARIOUS 19 14 LESSONS TO BE LEARNED - GABRIELLA CILMI 20 20 BACK TO BLACK - AMY WINEHOUSE This chart is compiled by stores, and downloads up to, and included Wednesday night. Scooter, were the surprise (to some) this week, and edge ever closer to take the number one! Def Leppard will slip, by Sunday...and all those compilation albums (4 in a row) are all close, in sales. From Monday 12th May, look out for albums that will chart next week for NEIL DIAMOND, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS, MARTHA WAINWRIGHT, ISOBEL CAMPBELL, EUROVISION 08 (VARIOUS), PENDULUM, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, and DAN LE SAC. Let`s head back, and look at the albums in May 1989... w/k ending 13th May 1989 01 NE STREET FIGHTING YEARS - SIMPLE MINDS 02 NE TEN GOOD REASONS - JASON DONOVAN 03 NE DISINTEGRATION - THE CURE 04 02 A NEW FLAME - SIMPLY RED 05 01 BLAST - HOLLY JOHNSON 06 03 ANYTHING FOR YOU - GLORIA ESTEFAN 07 05 RAW AND THE COOKED - FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS 08 09 EVERYTHING - BANGLES 09 06 LIKE A PRAYER - MADONNA 10 04 WHEN THE WORLD KNOWS YOUR NAME - DEACON BLUE 11 07 CLUB CLASSICS VOL II - SOUL II SOUL 12 15 DEEP HEAT-THE SECOND BURN - VARIOUS 13 30 PASTPRESENT - CLANNAD 14 08 KICK - INXS 15 13 POP ART - TRANSVISION VAMP 16 16 DON`T BE CRUEL - BOBBY BROWN 17 12 APPETITE FOR DESTUCTION - GUNS N` ROSES 18 11 NOW 14 - VARIOUS 19 25 KYLIE - KYLIE MINOGUE 20 18 FOREVER YOUR GIRL - PAULA ABDUL HOLLY JOHNSON dethroned by SIMPLE MINDS in 1989, after just the one sneaky week! JASON DONOVAN was still growing in success, following hottily from KYLIE (88, had seen the wedding in Neighbours). Althouh Jason`s album was 10 GOOD REASONS, it actually had 11 tracks (which puzzled many), then after listening we found that the title was actually from the single, "TOO MANY BROKEN HEARTS". After 2 weeks, Jason knocked out SIMPLE MINDS, from the top. TEN GOOD REASONS spent the rest of 1989, in the top 20 albums. THE CURE (are back for 2008, single released Tuesday). GUNS N` ROSES became worldwide superstars in the 90s, but it was still rather early days here. BOBBY BROWN (later Mr Whitney Houston) originally sung with 80s pop black kid sensation, "NEW EDITION". CLANNAD smashed into the chart, with a collection of new and old hits (and the unmistakeable sound of ENYA). KYLIE headed back up the chart...did she have a single this week in 1989? Let`s find out... The top singles, May 89... w/k ending 13th May 1989 01 02 HAND ON YOUR HEART - KYLIE MINOGUE 02 13 MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY - NATALIE COLE 03 01 ETERNAL FLAME - BANGLES 04 07 REQUIEM - LONDON BOYS 05 NE I WANT IT ALL - QUEEN 06 04 BABY I DON`T CARE - TRANSVISION VAMP 07 05 WHO`S IN THE HOUSE - BEATMASTERS/MERLIN 08 10 BEDS ARE BURNING - MIDNIGHT OIL 09 03 IF YOU DON`T KNOW ME BY NOW - SIMPLY RED 10 16 BRING ME EDELWEISS - EDELWEISS 11 15 WHERE HAS ALL THE LOVE GONE - YAZZ 12 36 I`M EVERY WOMAN 89 - CHAKA KHAN 13 18 YOUR MAMA DON`T DANCE - POISON 14 09 AMERICANOS - HOLLY JOHNSON 15 22 I`LL BE THERE FOR YOU - BON JOVI 16 23 ELECTRIC YOUTH - DEBBIE GIBSON 17 06 GOOD THING - FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS 18 30 THE LOOK - ROXETTE 19 08 LULLABY - THE CURE 20 11 AIN`T NOBODY BETTER - INNER CITY 21 17 ONE - METALLICA 22 14 I BEG YOUR PARDON - KON KAN 23 12 INTERESTING DRUG - MORRISEY 24 NE DON`T IT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - STEFAN DENNIS 25 20 ME MYSELF I - DE LA SOUL 26 49 ROOMS ON FIRE - STEVIE NICKS 27 25 YOU ON MY MIND - SWING OUT SISTER 28 47 THROUGH THE STORM - ARETHA FRANKLIN/ELTON JOHN 29 24 STRAIGHT UP - PAULA ABDUL 30 NE VIOLENTLY - HUE AND CRY 31 27 GOT TO KEEP ON - COOKIE CREW 32 34 MOVE CLOSER - TOM JONES 33 32 REAL LOVE - JODY WATLEY 34 NE HELYOM HALIB - CAPELLA 35 41 THRILL HAS GONE - TEXAS 36 37 HEAVEN HELP ME - DEON ESTUS 37 NE DISAPPOINTED - PUBLIC IMAGE LTD 38 NE MY LOVE IS SO RAW - ALYSON WILLIAMS/NIKKI-D 39 28 LIKE APRAYER - MADONNA 40 31 TOO MANY BROKEN HEARTS - JASON DONOVAN 41 19 THIS IS YOUR LAND - SIMPLE MINDS 42 NE WORKIN` OVERTIME - DIANA ROSS 43 NE THAT`S WHEN I THINK OF YOU - 1927 44 21 WHEN LOVE COME`S TO TOWN - U2/B.B. BEATMASTERS were rather annoyingly shouting "Who`s In The House"....I remember my dad mis-hearing this as "Balls in the House", maybe he was right!! MIDNIGHT OIL took a slow climb to top 10 status (they were Australian)....EDELWEISS from an Alpine region gave us BRING ME EDELWEISS, and ripped off the melody of ABBA`s "S.O.S.", and I believe were taken to court for it. There was the do you like DEBBIE GIBSON or TIFFANY debate (but by now TIFFANY had practically disappeared from the scene). CHAKA KHAN re-mixed a 1978 classic, and beat the peak position. KON KAN nicked a sample from LYNN ANDERSON`s 1971 top 5 hit, "ROSE GARDEN". MORRISEY managed to hang in the chart for a second week, unusual for him! STEFAN DENNIS was also in NEIGHBOURS...SWING OUT SISTER were on their last legs...I don`t remember the ARETHA/ELTON song at all! TOM JONES sang PHYLLIS NELSON`s 1985 hit...TEXAS found it hard to follow up their first hit...Was JOHN LYDON "DISAPPOINTED" with such a small hit?! Who remembers the group "1927?" JOHNNY NASH`s 1972 hit was re-mixed for a coffee advert (and was not a patch on the original). Taliking of coffee, NESCAFE were the sponsers of the NETWORK CHART (alongside David "Kid" Jensen....and here 19 years on, NESCAFE celebrate their 70th Anniversary! Hang around...Dave will put up the up to date singles, shortly....when he comes in!
  18. I`m sorry to say they do, as well. It`s all very well going on about Hit40uk, but that chart is ridiculously compiled with 50/50 percent, of both Sales/Airplay...then the top 10 is just the official sales top 10, which makes it even dafter. Yes, they have more listeners than the BBC (but that is mainly because, the listeners of that, have their radio permanently tuned to their Local Independant Station). As more Independant Stations, take Hit40uk, it`s going to have more listeners anyway. Then, there is Lucio (the presenter), he is not that good, and makes lots of mistakes, with info...very much like the gruesome twosome of Radio One! Given the edge, I prefer to listen to Hit40uk, but it ain`t that good because of the way the chart is compiled and the presentation is pretty bad too. Repetibly saying "What`s Gonna Be Number One?"....Oh Janet of Stoke says, it will be....(some song, that hasn`t a chance)!

Now 30 entered on the combined chart on Sunday 16th Apr 95 at number one, in front of Wet Wet Wet keeping them off the top. Now 30 was a combined no` 1 for 3 weeks. Dummy and Portishead did not show in the year`s top ten albums though. I don`t have any sales info, other than that.

Quite right James, they did have Jonathan at number one, and I believe it was the 2nd week of chart entry for him. Maybe a lot of German fans will pick up the Scooter album! ;) But they do have a quite big following, taken into account, rather like the people who will dash out, to get Iron Maiden soon.

Thanks Robbie. It may have been, a re-surge in interest for I Saw The Light. I can`t remember at all. We used to play the chart, on Student Radio. I think I must have been away then, because the hand written chart, was definately not my writing. Maybe the inmates, at the Uni found new popularity in the record!

Remember though Ben, in the combined artists/comps yesterday, Mariah was already down to 19, from number 9.

The weekly preview of what, might happen on next Sunday`s charts. I must thank the incredibly dashing John McManus (no relation to Jack) for his help today. On last week`s thread we had 35 in the top 40 singles (shame about Hadouken, and Ben`s Brother, they did better physically than downloads). We did better in the top 30, apart from those 2 mentioned already, with 28 in the 30, and 18 in the top 20. On the album front, we had 10 in the combined top 10 :yahoo: 18 in the 20, and 28 in the 30 (re-entries let us down). (Some think we make it up, but we don`t. There are mathematical equations, Sunday/Monday sales, pre-orders, and downloads taken into consideration).
