2 weeks at the top for JACK JOHNSON. Love songs all over the place, sure to plummet next week, with Valentine`s Day out of the way! MICHAEL JACKSON having the highest new entry, with the 25th Anniversary, of Thriller...the first number one single from that (originally) I believe was BILLIE JEAN.

Let`s go back to 1980. What happened then? Well Sunday nights were awash, with Cenral Europe`s most listened too, chart show, on Radio one, with the Sensational Mr TONY BLACKBURN (who had swap places with SIMON BATES 6 months earlier). Tony also introduced JUNIOR CHOICE now that ED STEWART had moved to the ED STEWART REQUEST SHOW on Radio two`s weekday afternoon schedule.

Valentine`s Day reflected even in 1980, with the LAST DANCE topping the chart (featuring hits from DIANA ROSS, JIMMY RUFFIN etc. Most of the albums had singles taken from them, and JACKO`s latest pre-Thriller, "OFF THE WALL". The unstoppable DES O, CONNER with the biggest climber (again Valentine`s Day). Imagine going out today, and buying your loved one a DES O, CONNER album! You would be hit over the head with it! This particular Album featured songs such as JUST FOR YOU (the ALAN PRICE song), and Des having an attempt at CHANSON D` AMOUR (ART and DOTTY TODD 1958, MANHATTEN TRANSFER 1977).

What can we say about 1980, well KENNY ROGERS had the surprise number 1. The SPECIALS hit was an EP actually called THE SPECIAL AKA LIVE EP...BLONDIE was about to score another charttopper...NOEL EDMONDS had been playing KEITH MICHELL on his Sunday show (KEITH had recorded the song in 1977), with NOEL spinning it constantly, it became a top 5 hit 3 years on! ELVIS COSTELLO, RAMONES, SHADOWS, MATCHBOX, FERN KINNEY all covered old songs (most noteably the RAMONES virtually, with PHIL SPECTOR totally copied the original of BABY I LOVE YOU from 1964 by the RONETTES, and FERN KINNEY covered a 1979 flop for RICHARD ALLEN all the way to the top, a few weeks later...JON AND VANGELIS (JON ANDERSON from YES), (VANGLELIS ex-APHRODITES CHILD) collaborated for the album SHORT STORIES, and achieved a few singles too....JEFFERSON STARSHIP were originally JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, later of course they became just STARSHIP....My fav of the day, was NEW MUSIK who could just not break the top 10, with any of their brilliant releases....on the bubble at 32 was JOHN FOXX and UNDERPASS (John, an original front man with ULTRAVOX)...ALSO on the bubble were SINGING THE BLUES (a re-make by MR RE-MAKE, DAVE EDMUNDS) and STIFF LITTLE FINGERS had a slow climb into the top 40, with the classic AT THE EDGE.

    01 NE MERCY - DUFFY *

    * Denotes download only

DUFFY scratches in passed NICKLEBACK and BASSHUNTER. If I am correct this is the first time, that a download only track, has made it to the top, with 2 weeks still left until the physical release? It`s probably a fact that the physicals of ROCKSTAR could not push it to stay at the top long enough, to withhold DUFFY who came from nowhere this week. Outside the top 45, are the CORAL the rest of the top 50, have been about for a while...with AMY MACDONALD slipping to 47 with them. The top 60, has entries from REM, CRAIG DAVID, has been taken over by GNARLS BARKLEY (climbed over that is)!!!!

What`s going to happen next week? I think DUFFY will remain a-top until/including the physical release...some think H TWO 0, but I don`t think H TWO 0, will go any higher than number 2...where will KYLIE be physically added next week? I got an inkling, she might miss the top 5.

Don`t forget we will get together for NEXT WEEK`S CHART on Monday from 4.30, and have a preview into the future!

  2. Another old happy new year hit

04/03/2000 Toploader Dancing In The Moonlight {19}-26-29-34-43-62-71-

5/11/2000 re entry Toploader Dancing In The Moonlight 11-16-21-26-22-20-23-21-21-21-17-13-8-{7}-12-14-21-22-28-42-48-54-58-70-71->25

Do you remember that the song was originally released by HI BREED in 1970, and KING HARVEST in 1973? KING HARVEST did another great song called A LITTLE BIT LIKE MAGIC in 73 too...Both HI BREED and KING HARVEST were total flops, a bit of a shame really.

Quite a few people, think that DANCING IN THE MOONLIGHT when performed by TOPLOADER was a new song, but it was already 30 years old!!!!!!

Just thinking about "White Lines", by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel. It entered the top 75, in Feb 1984, and took 25 weeks or so to get to a high of number 7...now according to Richard Skinner, on the top 40, in 1984, the record spent most of the year, in the top 100.

Infact it entered te top 100, on tues 8th Nov 1983!

    The full run: 85 - 60 - 63 - 75 - re - re - re - re - re - 93 - 93 - 77 - 84 - 74 - 59 - 52 - 53 - 52 - 49 - 57 - 55 - 56 - 58 - 55 - 52 - 56 - 52 - 48 - 51 - 52 - 46 - 36 - 21 - 12 - 10 - 9 - 8 - 7 - 7 - 10 - 9 - 10 - 13 - 18 - 20 - 23 - 31 - 39 - 41 - 52 - 55 - re - re - 77 - 75 - 77 - 99 - 88 - 96 - 83 - 73 - re - 83 - 85

I don`t think we could beat that run! 38 weeks to get to number 7! It has to be said, it was obviously still in the top 200, when it dropped out of the top 100, and re-entered just like Sinitta!

Can we beat it? I can`t think of anyone, that has????

We all know it`s taken 17 weeks, for Nickelback, to get to number 2. But back in the mid-eighties, when I first got involved in Radio, Sinitta, took a lifetime to get to the number 2 spot.

Every week, I collected Record Mirror, back then. SO MACHO was a double A sided single with CRUISING on the other side. At this period, I was doing a hospital radio thing. SO MACHO was always being requested by the teenagers, who were in at the time. It was released in the February of 1986 and took no less than, 23 weeks to get to number 2, on Tuesday 5th Aug 1986.

Here is the chart run, where it did fall out of the top 100, a couple of times, in the full run.

    Entered chart Tuesday 4th March 1986: 59 - 50 - 49 - 49 - 48 - 47 - 49 - 51 - 64 - 59 - 68 - re - 85 - 81 - re - re - 73 - 52 - 46 - 33 - 16 - 5 - 2 - 3 - 3 - 2 - 7 - 9 - 14 - 21 - 32 - 36 - 53

The final week of chart was Tuesday 18th Oct 86, when the following week, it disappeared because Sinitta`s new hit "Feel`s Like The First Time", scraped into the top 50.

Will that run of 23 weeks, to get as high as number 2 ever be beaten? Can anyone think of any other hits, that failed to make number one, that took a long time, to get to their chart zenith?

    (Sourced from Record Mirror 1986)

  5. What`s the Romeo and Juliet theme on the Valentine chart?

Well if you know Simon Bates` "Our Tune", you would recognise it as the piece of music that Simon, talks over when he does it! For that music is, the Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet, and was a U.S. number one single in 1969.

40 NE MOIRA JANE`S CAFE - DEFINITION OF SOUND

What a lot of forgotten pieces, in the bottom 9, of the 40! Probably not even heard since 92. The PASADENAS only made the top, on the MRIB chart and of course, was a re-make of the 1973 top 20 hit, for NEW YORK CITY. WET WET WET had a bit of a surprise charttopper with GOODNIGHT GIRL. SHAKESPEARS SISTER seemed to be there forever with STAY (an apt title). MICHAEL JACKSON scoring with another hit from the DANGEROUS album. KYLIE covering a CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD top 5 hit from 1970 (when Kylie herself, was just 2 years old). "You`re Not on the list, you`re not coming in", was the taunt by THE BOUNCER at 8. E.Ps everywhere with PRODIGY, PRIMAL SCREAM and the WONDER STUFF. Lots of album material, being released as singles, for SIMPLY RED, MICHAEL BOLTON, and CE CE PENNISTON. The WEDDING PRESENT were on there second monthly hit with GO-GO DANCER (they released a single every month, for the whole of 1992). In 92, the MANIC STREET PREACHERS singles used to stay around longer, than just one week! MY GIRL failed to sell well, in the 1965 period (being covered by OTIS REDDING at the time). Here the song all over a tv ad, finally hit the top 3, in 92. GOD GAVE ROCK N` ROLL TO YOU, originally hit the top 30, in 1973 for ARGENT. CURTIS STIGERS was all over radio 2, with the likes of BRIAN HAYES, KEN BRUCE, ED STEWART and JOHN DUNN playing him constantly. Also in 1992 on Radio 2, ED STEWART launched the short lived easy listening album chart, on a Monday afternoon.

Right, back up to date, here are this week`s top films...

No surprise, for much talked about CLOVERFIELD. Never a fan of films like ALIEN VS PREDATOR, utter nonsense, for my money. Down an 8 place fall to number 10!

5 weeks, for BASSHUNTER. Can it possibly make 6? Will GOLDFRAPP or THE FEELING knock it off next week? Well done to WET WET WET, not equaling the 1992 number one! But a top 10 entry for something with virtually no downloads, must be something. Outside the top 45, mainly songs that have been around forever, but in the top 60, there is DUFFY, FLO RIDA, VAMPIRE WEEKEND, CRAIG DAVID and the dowloads keep BLOOD RED SHOES out, of the top 50! Look out for future new hits from, ONE REPUBLIC, SUGABABES, and ADDICTIVE with T2.

Notice we missed out VALENTINO by CONNIE FRANCIS, VALENTINE by T`PAU and not forgetting the ST. VALENTINES DAY MASSACRE E.P. by MOTORHEAD (that featured the song, "PLEASE DON`T TOUCH", which was a cover of the 1959 top 20 hit, for JOHNNY KIDD!!

Don`t forget Next Week`s Chart, Monday at 4pm, and we will discover why Michael Jackson, did not make it in the national chart top 30, this week!

  7. I thought something was afoot when Chartbreakers did not feature, on Sun. I read that Lucio bloke, on Capital say the Hit40 has twice as many listeners now. Probably coz they play 43 songs in 3 hours, and have cut the chat. Although that chart is nonsensical  When did you reckon there could be a major change, Trevs or anyone?

I would say that when the gruesome twosome, were employed as hosts, it would have been on a yearly contract. So, that would take it to next October. Most of the time these days, when a presenter/s are employed they take up a 12 month contract. It used to be a minimum of 2 years, but it doesn`t happen much today. Going back to 1979, when Simon Bates was doing the show (he took over, from Tom Browne in April 78), obviously, Simon already had a Radio one contract, as he did the morning show anyway. Simon was taken off when Radio one bosses needed to give Tony Blackburn another job, (meaning Simon only did it for 18 months). Reggie and Fearne newcomers/new contract....probably minimum of 1 year. The bosses at Radio one, may of known Fearne would move on, hence 2 presenters!

Of course Mikey and co, are exactly correct. You only need one presenter. I am informed that Lucio, has had a big wave of extra listeners, since these 2 were put on Radio one. Hence Hit40uk, playing all the songs, and featuring a couple of new releases, the number one album, and rundown of the top ten album chart at 6pm. After which Lucio plays the top ten, non stop and commercial free, until 7.00. Just imagine the number of complaints, that go to Radio one, every Sunday, when Amy MacDonald`s, "This is the Life", has been in the top 40, for something like 10 weeks, and these 2 nutters, have only played it about 4 times, at the most (even missing it out, when it went up 12 places, a few weeks back....even though all 3 of Rihanna`s songs were played, week after week! The total number of complaints to the producer must be astronomical! Most of all, the programme is the worst, it`s ever been...since the top 40 began in 1978!

  8. Apparently she's moving to the US and already quit the X-Factor Xtra show.

Fingers crossed she'll quit the chart show soon...leaving Reggie all on his

    lonesome.

Insider info tells us that both will be on their bikes, very soon!

  9. Only 500 copies behind Basshunter!

I`ll tell you, when we did the weekly run of shops yesterday for next week`s chart, the closeness, was very apparent. The Physical version of Rockstar, had diminished, but now the shops, are well stocked, with the single again. 2weeks ago, on MRIB`s physical chart, Rockstar shot up, from 22 to number 6. Number 4 physically last week, and growing. When we added airplay it pushes, passed Basshunter, very easily....so it`s possible, it could do it, by Sunday.

I must add, Ultravox were really gutted by missing out on a #1 that week,Vienna is one of my favourite 80's hits all time, Joe Dolce has a lot to answer to for ruining Ultravox's chances.

Absolutely. Joe Dolce, wasn`t even Italian. He was Australian, and a good friend of Jasper Carrott...Whats a matter you, Hey, gotta no respect, whata d`you think you do, why you looking so sad, it`s a nicer place...ahh Shuddup o` ya face!!

Funny thing was Ultravox, sold more copies, and became the 5th best seller of 81, so it sold better than some number ones did, in 81!

  11. 34 years! :D :cheer:

Here is another fact on Tony Christie...round about 1973, his pop career took a nose-dive. Neil Sedaka offered Tony, a song called Solitaire. Tony and his management turned it down.

Surprise Surprise, Andy Williams snapped it up at the end of 73, and he took the same song into the top 5, in Jan 1974. Poor Tony, bet he felt bad!

  12. Well sure if Basshunter drop another 6k this week to 32k and Nickelback gain another 5k to 35k then they could be well placed for this weeks No1!

Yes Celine Dion shares the honours with Jennifer Rush taking 15 weeks to climb to No1!

    Think Twice 53-42-52-30-28-22-20-9-8-5-6-4-2-2-2-1-

    The Power Of Love 65-49-51-45-44-47-46-44-43-47-49-42-36-15-2-1-

Yep, I forgot Jennifer! How about the longest time taken to get to number 2? I think it must be Sinitta and "So Macho"..it hit the top 200, in Feb 86, I think...but didn`t get to number 2, until August 86.

Back in the day, when I was young  I remember Charlene in 1982, with "I`ve Never Been too Me", that (at that point) was the longest time to make it to the top, from May to June. It took 7 weeks! But it is definately Celine Dion who wins the prize! Ever growing airplay on Think Twice, meant it was first played in October, by the Pepsi Chart, on Independant Radio, in 94!

But if you are very good, you would remember that Space Oddity, by David Bowie (originally released in 1969), took 6 years to make it to number one in Oct 1975! Unchained Melody - the Righteous Brothers, took 25 years 1965 - 1990!

  14. I be surprised if Nickelback do go to #1, personally I hate the track, but chart statistically it be great having a track at #1 after 17 weeks in the chart, I can't remember any other track that spend more than 17 weeks and suddenly it peaked at No.1

Actually it be great to see, if there was any other acts that spend so many weeks in the chart and than peaking at #1, but of the top of my head I can't think of anyone at the moment apart from James Blunt.

Well THINK TWICE by CELINE DION took a long time to go to number one, how many weeks did that take, Mikey?

It`s Monday, so the preview of what`s been selling around the shops, and what`s being download since yesterday. We went around town with our spies, took sales info, and national stores chart info, from the likes of HMV, WOOLWORTHS, and 2 other smaller shops, added in 4 download sites info...took in radio/tv airplay (which works 40/40/20%), added it all together, to come up with these charts.

Last week, when compared to last night`s official chart we had 18 records correctly in the album top 20 (though not exactly all in the right order), but the top 10 was nearly right!

I heard on the grapevine, that Great DJ by the Tings Tings was disqualified from the chart because, there were a lot of free downloads given away. Can anyone confirm this?

I haven`t been able to confirm this at all. I have spoken to Dave Taylor, but he doesn`t know either, but tells me that there was a printing error on yesterdays mrib chart. It should be that URBNRI record at 36, not The Ting Tings, he thinks. As Great DJs is at 26, at the moment on iTunes, I would expect it to be in the top 75 singles chart. Looking round the web, it doesn`t say anything, about the song being disqualified. The physical release is on the 3rd March. So, we will have to wait, and see what happens, in the meantime. The download has 2 tracks on it, and is declared an e.p.

  17. Trevs you were on about the Reynolds Girls. I remembet that song when I started school. When was it released in 89 coz I am sure it came out in 88?

It may have been played in 1988, it certainly hung around the bottom of the chart, for a few weeks, before it hit the top 40. I reckon it was released around the first, or second week of Feb 1989 possibly the 6th or 13th. An anti-oldies song, with lines such as, "Rock n`Roll Radio, Music From the Past, We Don`t Want Them Back, I`d Rather Jack". The British female duo, took the song to number 8, on both MRIB and GALLUP charts in March 89. I first heard it on the ED STEWART show, on Radio Mercury in Sussex. ED wasn`t listening to the lyrics, because he stated that they sang, "I`d Rather Jack, WITH Fleetwood Mac!" At the time, oldies started being played, more frequently, when the Gold stations, such as CAPITAL GOLD (London), FIRST GOLD RADIO (Guildford) began. Even Radio one, were playing older hits on shows such as, SIMON BATES playing songs, as far back as 1958. Like I said, Radio 2, were playing 40s records, back in 89, and hardly any chart singles, at all.

  18. The album I was thinking was Electronic by Electronic which features "Getting Away With It", which was Bernard Sumner collabotating with Johnny Marr

Oh yeah, remember now. The track of "Getting Away With It", featured guest vocals by Neil Tennant (of the Pet Shop Boys)!!

  19. I haven't played that album in yonkers, its awesome, but was it under Etectronic not New Order, unless I'm thinking of the wrong album.

Forgive me, I just looked it up, it was New Order, I was thinking of the wrong album

What album were you thinking of Mikey? You confused me, I was thinking Electronic was a Pet Shop Boys thing, as in "Getting Away With It", later in 1989???

In 89, MARC ALMOND had a solo version of SOMETHINGS GOTTEN HOLD OF MY HEART on an album. This was created exactly like the 1967 original number 5 hit for GENE PITNEY. Marc, and his record company (Parlophone), persuaded GENE PITNEY to add his vocals, for the single release. HOLLY JOHNSON spun away from FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD for his first solo outing...MIKE RUTHERFORD teamed up, with PAUL CARRICK, for the LIVING YEARS, dedicated to his own father. How many other people had PAUL CARRICK sung with? Well, he had sung on many other records, and his first group, as such, was ACE (who had a top 20 hit in 74, with HOW LONG), later covered by ROD STEWART in 1982. MORRISEY scored another top 10 hit, away from the SMITHS (next week we expect MORRISEY back in the top 10, with the new single). There was BOBBY BROWN pre-marriage to who?...WHITNEY HOUSTON of course! MICHAEL BALL sang LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING from ASPECTS OF LOVE (the latest ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER production), helped by Radio 2 airplay (this about the only song in the singles chart, to be played by the station, at that time) along with presenters DEREK JAMESON, KEN BRUCE, JIMMY YOUNG, GLORIA HUNNIFORD, the late ADRIAN LOVE, and the late JOHN DUNN...SAMANTHA FOX sung DUSTY SPRINGFIELD...I ONLY WANNA BE WITH YOU also got to number 4 for BAY CITY ROLLERS, and the TOURISTS, unfortunately SAM FOX stalled at number 16! MILLI VANILLI had a BONEY M connection, same production team etc, and also we discovered MILLI VANILLI didnt sing on their records! Finally on 89, WILL TO POWER scored with the medley BABY I LOVE YOUR WAY and FREEBIRD....BABY I LOVE YOUR WAY (a PETER FRAMPTON song circa 76, from the live album, and FREEBIRD twice a hit for LYNYRD SKYNYRD in 76 and 83.

    * Denotes download only. There are 16 download only tracks, in this week`s top 75.

Looks like DAVID JORDAN is about to smash the top 3 next week. We tipped it for number one, on next week`s chart, last Monday! Can BASSHUNTER hold on for 5 weeks? This week NICKELBACK finally entered the physical top 15, expect them to go down next week, when MARK BROWN, MORRISEY, MICHAEL JACKSON will hit the top 10, and expect the FEELING to enter the top 10, on downloads alone. What about BJORK can she make the top 20, with EARTH INTRUDERS? Outside this week`s 40 we have PLAIN WHITE T`s (HEY THERE DELILAH, could be back in the 40, tomorrow) LEON JACKSON is 42, alongside ROBYN 43 (WITH EVERY HEARTBEAT), STRONGER - KANYE 44, GIMME MORE - BRITNEY 45, HTILY - RIHANNA, TIMBALAND, 50CENT, BLOC PARTY, DUFFY *and MICHAEL JACKSON*...in the top 60, its entries for URBNRI*, CRAIG DAVID*, BIFFY CLYRO*. CHASING CARS and SNOW PATROL goes to 51, and ROBYN and HANDLE ME is 52. ATOMIC KITTEN*, THE FEELING*, JAY Z/LINKIN PARK* and ISRAEL KAMIKAWAWOO`LE* are other entries in the full chart.

Won`t add a download chart, there wasn`t one on Smash Hits tv today, so can`t put that up either, but we have seen the iTunes thread anyway. Looking around other download charts, we see RIHANNA is number one in Woolworths downloads, MICHAEL JACKSON is in the top 30, on Tesco`s chart at 26, meanwhile DAVID JORDAN is number 4, in Tesco, but only 27 on Woolworths! NICKELBACK slip on HMV`s, and Tesco, and KELLY ROWLAND is at 3 in one, and 4 on another.

Look out in coming weeks for new releases from CASCADA, ALICIA KEYS, and DELINQUENT. Don`t forget Next Week`s Chart, on Monday from 4ish, where there will be battles in the albums with JACK JOHNSON, MARY J. BLIGE, HOT CHIP, ADELE (going for 2nd week at the top), and PAVOROTTI. Will RIHANNA`s physical release of DON`T STOP THE MUSIC head the singles? I shouldn`t think so, but ADELE could take a big tumble.

I believe downloads would make the chart, more exciting if the download was available only from the same day, as the physical release. I don`t like the chart being cluttered by old material. So, if an "old" recording becomes popular years later...such as Mariah Carey last December, then it should also be made available, as a physical single.

It is very apparent that many titles in the chart, lose there physical availability...such as at the moment, try to find a physical version of any of these, in single form...Rockstar - Nickelback, Relax-Take it Easy - Mika, She`s So Lovely - SFG, Goodbye Mr A - Hoosiers, Hey There Delilah - PWT`s, Umbrella - Rihanna, Dream Catch Me - Newton Faulkner, Gimme More - Britney Spears, With Every Heartbeat - Robyn, Hate That I Love You - Rihanna...these are all still in the top 40, but it is increasingly difficult, (why would you want to anyway, because they are months old) to get physical copies today. So, they should either be topped up by more supplys, or thrown out of the chart, to make way for newer hits, that may appear further down the top 200. As those titles are from albums (in the album chart anyway), then they have lost the appeal of the original single (when it was available). At the rate of this moment the download chart, will soon be exactly the same as the combined singles chart.

  22. Totally off-topic, but did MRIB ever compile an airplay chart in the '80s? I'm curious as to how the airplay charts looked pre-October 1990!

Not directly. But of course during the 1984 - 93 period Airplay was included in the weekly chart, on Independant Radio, abeit 5% of airplay. To which, at the time was stated, "by using airplay in the main chart, it means our chart, is nearly 2 weeks ahead, of the rest". It is possible to work out some airplay, by looking at the Network Chart, from those days. Certainly, Wham`s "I`m Your Man" was an airplay number one, well in front of Feargal Sharkey`s "A Good Heart" in November 1985. Which put Wham as a new entry at number one, the week of release (ahead of Radio one`s top 40).
