The internet has destroyed the Top 40???
The thing is though Mikey, Capital, and Radio 2, are no better. Radio 2 is full of egos, and so called stars. Capital have their heads, in the clouds..Johnny Vaughn, the dreaded Lucio etc. You are right about over downloading the same tracks...I thoroughly believe, the same people download the same track every week, to keep it up there, it`s a farce all right. The truth about radio today is, you will struggle to find a decent station. I slipped into local radio in the early 90s, it began to slide shortly after (hopefully not my thought)!!! But then Local stations used to be virtually able, to play what the people wanted...Then these playlists, of overplayed material turned up...producers saying we want you to plug this, radio bosses, telling you what to say, even scripting shows. I got out of Local radio in 2004. All I do now is a bit of Hospital radio, now and then...where the people are always first, because they only can be.

The internet has destroyed the Top 40???
Only the people that listen or buy the trash, in the first place are to blame. Radio one returned to be the top chart show in 2004, not because it was the best one..but because various radio groups, started their own shows..the Smash Hits Chart ran on Emap stations, the A list turned up elswhere, and Hit40uk launched. Airplay, is to blame for a lot, biased stations Radio One, Capital etc...ageist stations (the lot of them)..won`t play Status Quo, Cliff, or whoever! Every song in the top 200, should be on all stations playlists, then the biased c**p, that appears week after week, would not happen, at all! The chart would reflect a vast amount of age groups different tastes...there`s the problem! If Radio one`s audience fell to an all time low, something might be done!

The internet has destroyed the Top 40???
The Internet has not destroyed the top 40, Radio One have done that on their own, since 2003! All radio one, have done since 1984, is copy ideas brought in by Independant Radio. They copied Kid Jensen, in 1984, by running down the last ten songs, before the top 30, top 20, and top 10...Independant Radio`s idea. The Network Chart played the chart on a Sunday as new by MRIB. Radio One, then entered into talks to get the Gallup chart, new on Sundays. The Network Chart, played the whole top 30 every week, with 3 bubblers/new releases featured. Radio One launched Chartbusters to play guess what...new releases! Then in 1991, like the Network Chart, they decided to play the full top 40! Independant Radio, introduced Neil Fox, and the Pepsi Chart in Aug 1993, with competitions etc...surprise, surprise Radio One started having competitions. The Pepsi Chart have guests talking about their hits...Radio One copied again! Then the Pepsi Chart became Hit40uk, interactive with the listener...Radio One copied again! The Pepsi Chart filled up with even more chart chat...Radio One copied again, by missing out half the chart!! The Pepsi Chart was the first chart show to have 2 presenters together...Radio One copied yet again! Maybe they might catch on, that Hit40uk, has now stopped chatting so much, not running many comps, and playing the chart (yes) in full!!

Woolies singles chart
Well on the name badge thing...If I remember from my manager days, while stocking the shelfs etc, you end up with lots of waste cardboard/paper/plastic etc...now the store where I worked was large, when it was known as F.W. Woolworth (the original, man who founded the company). We used to have to take the waste etc, to the loading areas, where we had to operate compactors, and cutters for card, and stuff...it was deemed dangerous to wear Jewellery, loose fitting clothes (i.e. ties) and name badges (that may come undone) and get stuck in moving parts of various apparatus. Which certainly has its points. There was a case (not Woolies) where a chap got his arm stuck in a compactor because his badge, fell off, and got stuck between the mechanism, of a machine that was in operation! Very ghastly, that was. Name badges, have a lot to answer for...take another example, in a shop like Sainsburys, they have Bakeries/restaurants...now they tell you you are not allowed to wear any jwellery...but they tell you, that you must always wear a name badge. Correct me, but isn`t a name badge, similar to jewellery? Is that stupid or what! I know what you mean about not being allowed to play certainn songs in the shop...Take PINK and GET THE PARTY STARTED, we had a complaint (again not Woolies) where a woman was apparently offended when Pink, sings "Kissing My Arse"....Strange enough, no one complained when we played "JET`AIME MOI NON PLUS by JUDGE DREAD!! How about that!!

Woolies singles chart
Sounds about right. Be careful though! I was a manager once in Woolies..in those days, it was deemed not safe, to wear name badges, because some "strange" person, might get your full name, and find you, in the phone book, and even stalk you....it was dodgy! Always make sure your name badge only has your first name, on it. And do not operate machinery with it on either. I still reckon name badges should be put in the waste bin, actually. I would never had my staff wear them, for loads of reasons, even health and safety. What are your rules these days?

You must have better Woolies, in Scotland then! Most in England are absolutely limited/small...and the staff, are they okay?

Next Week`s Chart
Yeah, it was the airplay we included that pushed the both Hoosiers and Mika in. Maybe should not have used airplay too, but it was the Luxembourg way, so it is true to the originals!!! I remember an instance on Luxembourg, on the 25th Jan 1983, their top 20, had LARGARJITA NICK by BAUHAUS at number 17...on the official chart, it got no higher than number 44!! So, the Hoosiers position, ain`t nothing! Actually, I think the top 5 is doing rather well, if nothing else. Maybe Mika, will remain inside the OCC top 20, on Sunday, who knows? :)
-
Worst Case Scenario - the hoosiers?
Yep, and on Smash Hits tv, and Chart show tv...and in the Radio airplay top 10. Not being stocked physically by some shops, such as Woolworths. But on the racks on HMV...What`s happened? Maybe not a stronger enough song.

Ultimate chart of 2007 countdown
Thanks for all that so far Terry. You`ve worked hard there! All that adding up etc, must have taken ages. A great job! Look forward to the rest in the 249...

Woolies singles chart
I was thinking, "the older generation" i.e. the over 50s etc...obviously I wouldn`t expect them, to buy singles, but what does the "older" person listen too? I was brought up in a family, that were all much older than me (being a child, to a mother and father, in their 40s, even then). So, obviously I was basically brought up on easy listening, on the original sound of Radio 2, in the early days. Certainly in the early - mid 70s, they were bashing out Sinatra, Bill Haley etc, but what do people over 50 listen too, today? There isn`t really any national stations, around to cater for them. Certainly not todays Radio 2!! I suppose Smooth Radio, is on the edge of "easy listening", but they don`t stick to that type of music at all, playing Springsteen, and other rockier people. So what does the average 50plus or older person actually listen too, in 2008? Do they even buy albums, currently in the charts? The single track is most certainly becoming a younger persons game, via downloads etc. So, an age gap is rapidily appearing in the music genre.

Woolies singles chart
It makes you laugh, when they stick their own singles chart on the wall...and then don`t bother stocking singles, anyway, which is just plain stupid. The physical should be iven more exposure. The download chart, is heading for a takeover bid. It`s a sad day, and no mistake.

Fearne and Reggie?!?
He indeed did. But I was elsewhere then

Hit40uk 6th Jan 2008
I suppose it could be described as almost equivalent, but the top 10, on Hit40uk, will always be the same as the Official chart, because airplay is only counted in the 40 - 11 segment, of the chart, it is basically 50/50 on sales/airplay in that sector. No pre-released track, can be featured if it is not on any independant radio stations playlist. Unfortunately, it is just the story of Independant radio`s airplay...the number 11, is usually the most played track on Independant radio, that week. On the whole, the MRIB charts (when used, on air) were much better. With only a 5% of airplay added. Hit40uk, is compiled by music control/Milward Brown (OCC).

Next Week`s Chart
Do you want to see it, every week then Jonny? I will have to see what we can do! Monday is quite an empty day, really for chart news, so its a good thing to do on Mondays.
-
Next Week`s Chart
Hey Jonny, the programme itself, (the KCFM, one) went out on many local stations networks, previously. But many dropped it, there was a bit of 'over dramatised' news on Sean Tilley`s personal life, in the press...that may have been why some took, it off. Sean, himself broadcasted on BigL (Radio London) on A.M. and Satellite, until October 07. But he doesn`t turn up, there these days (which is a shame, because Sean, is a great presenter). He currently does a breakfast show, in Gloucester. The Hull show (KCFM) is still on, and indeed still taken by OASIS FM, in Tenerife...it is only vintage countdowns, that are broadcasted though, from 1966 - 1991.

Next Week`s Chart
Thank you Mr Fishlock, I must have the same "producer" as Fearne and Reggie! :D That`s what happens after listening to Katie Melua albums!
-
Fearne and Reggie?!?
Absolutely agree. I have worked for a few radio stations, and the producer can sometimes "hold" the cards up for the presentation of the show. On a chart show, all the positions, "this" and "last" week are in front of them, together with number of weeks in the chart.. There is no reason, for a presenter to slip up, on that info. Going right back the likes of TOM BROWNE, TONY BLACKBURN, SIMON BATES etc, did not make that many mistakes! It has to be said that only MARK GOODIER ever played the top 40, in its entirety. Unfortunately Radio one, don`t want to do a slick, less chat, more chart type programme, anymore...they think it is old hat. Totatally rubbish!!! Bring back the "slick" countdowns of yesterday, at once! The radio one chart, would have a good host with someone like Sean Tilley, or Neil Winfield. Too Radio one...it is not a contest to play the number one before the other side!!!!!
-
Next Week`s Chart
The only problem on the Luxembourg chart, was the fact that some obscure smaller hit, could appear on the top 20, due to airplay..i.e. Steely Dan or Eric Clapton, would frequently make their top 20, but not even make the national top 40! The station re-running Radio Luxembourg top 20s, is KCFM 99.9, in Hull...Sundays 5 - 7pm, with Sean Tilley, and an older presenter, from the passed like PAUL BURNETT, TOM BROWNE, PETE MURRAY, ADRIAN JUSTE, DAVID HAMILTON, TONY PRINCE, BENNY BROWN, JIMMY SAVILE, and MIKE READ, the programme is also available, on the KCFM website, listen live facilty. It is also broadcasted, on OASIS FM, in Tenerife, in the wee small hours of 6am, Saturdays and Sundays, and again there is a listen live facilty.

Next Week`s Chart
Did you have a Redifussion TV rental telly, Mikey? They were all cable tv, and Luxembourg was broadcasted, on there from 7pm, and even then the fading was there! Redifussion used to team it up on the same channel as Radio one. R1 would be broadcast from 7am - 3pm, then Capital Radio, took over from 3 - 7, followed by Luxy!
-
Next Week`s Chart
Absolutely Chris, I did exactly the same! The reception used to fade out on 208AM, all of a sudden...some foreign speaking station, would start to slide up, over the top! I also noticed, that all the latest "new" local stations, used to be given frequencies, near 208 metres, certainly in the South-easr...210, sprung up in Reading, County Sound, on 203, BBC Radio London was on 206...what a battle it was too listen!
-
Next Week`s Chart
Maybe! It is the added airplay, that is pushing Hoosiers, Mika and Scouting for Girls up...when we did the quick research for this, it is very prevailant that ADELE and CHASING PAVEMENTS should be in the top 14, on airplay alone. We came to the agreement, not too include it, because the physical isn`t released just yet.

Next Week`s Chart
If you were around, in the late 60s, 70s, 80s, and early 90s...you may remember the Radio Luxembourg iin-house produced top 20 (also known as Next Weeks Chart). It was introduced in the 60s, on a Tuesday night, bringing the following week`s chart before, it ever happened! Presented by people like TONY PRINCE, BENNY BROWN, and even DAVID JENSEN. It ceased in 1991, along with Radio Luxembourg. The last presenter was SEAN TILLEY, when the show went out at 9pm, on Sundays. Largely it was based, on the station`s airplay/powerplay hits, and the following week`s new releases, with a touch of advanced sales info. All though, some would say, it was "made up", it still had some very well worked out correctness, for the following week! Hey I thought, why don`t we ressurect it for Buzzjack? But we have to do some proper research. So, I got together with a couple of buddies, 2 of which, work in record stores. I went out with another friend, and we noted various stores, "own" produced Monday singles charts. Covering 4 different stores, HMV, WOOLWORTHS, and 2 other lesser known stores. We noted their individual chart positions, had a look at 4 download top 20s, from other on-line stores, took a look at the Radio/TV airplay chart, added all the info together, and so came up with the following.... How will this look, on next Sunday`s official countdown? And indeed, tomorrow`s mids? 20 11 GOODBYE MR A - HOOSIERS 19 16 CHANGE - SUGABABES 18 15 WHAT HURT`S THE MOST - CASCADA 17 13 ABOUT YOU NOW - SUGABABES 16 NE WORSE CASE SCENARIO - HOOSIERS 15 17 ELVIS AIN`T DEAD - SCOUTING FOR GIRLS 14 20 RELAX TAKE IT EASY - MIKA 13 12 DON`T STOP THE MUSIC - RIHANNA 12 10 NO ONE - ALICIA KEYS 11 08 ROCKSTAR - NICKELBACK 10 06 VALERIE - RONSON/WINEHOUSE 09 09 HEARTBROKEN - T2 08 07 CALL THE SHOTS - GIRLS ALOUD 07 04 APOLOGISE - TIMBALAND 06 05 RULE THE WORLD - TAKE THAT 05 19 PIECE OF ME - BRITNEY SPEARS 04 03 BLEEDING LOVE - LEONA LEWIS 03 02 CRANK THAT - SOULJA BOY 02 14 NOW YOU`RE GONE - BASSHUNTER 01 01 WHEN YOU BELIEVE - LEON JACKSON That all looks very convincing! BASSHUNTER, looking like they could well be heading to number one. In one particular shop, SOULJA BOY had been apparently out-selling LEON. We will might do this again next week, if time prevails. Here is an added average album top 10... 01 CLUBBERS GUIDE TO 2008 - VARIOUS ARTISTS 02 IN RAINBOWS - RADIOHEAD 03 BEAUTIFUL WORLD - TAKE THAT 04 LIFE IN CARTOON MOTION - MIKA 05 NOW 68 - VARIOUS ARTISTS 06 SPIRIT - LEONA LEWIS 07 CALL ME IRRESPONSIBLE - MICHAEL BUBLE 08 MINISTRY OF SOUND ANTHEMS 91 - 08 - VARIOUS ARTISTS 09 TRICK TO LIFE - HOOSIERS 10 SCOUTING FOR GIRLS - SCOUTING FOR GIRLS Just for interest, here is an old "Next Week`s Chart", from Radio Luxembourg`s archive... This chart was announced on Radio Luxembourg, on 9th Jan 1979, supposibly the chart for w/k ending Jan 20th 1979... 01 YMCA - VILLAGE PEOPLE 02 HIT ME WITH YOUR RYTHYM STICK - IAN DURY 03 LAY YOUR LOVE ON ME - RACEY 04 SEPTEMBER - EARTH WIND AND FIRE 05 SONG FOR GUY - ELTON JOHN 06 HELLO THIS IS JOANIE - PAUL EVANS 07 LE FREAK - CHIC 08 I LOST MY HEART TO A STARSHIP TROOPER - SARA BRIGHMAN/HOT GOSSIP 09 ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE - FUNKADELIC 10 I`M EVERY WOMAN - CHAKA KHAN 11 CAR 67 - DRIVER 67 12 A TASTE OF AGGRO - BARRON KNIGHTS 13 YOU DON`T BRING ME FLOWERS - BARBRA STRIESAND/NEIL DIAMOND 14 TOO MUCH HEAVEN - BEE GEES 15 A LITTLE MORE LOVE - OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN 16 I`LL PUT YOU TOGETHER AGAIN - HOT CHOCOLATE 17 IN THE BUSH - MUSIQUE 18 ALWAYS AND FOREVER - HEATWAVE 19 RAMA LAMA DING DONG - ROCKY SHARPE AND THE REPLAYS 20 MARY`S BOY CHILD - BONEY M Well, they did well in 1979, with just missing top 20 entries, from the THREE DEGREES, and BARRY WHITE. They also slipped up, with OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN, who went up into the national top 10, but Luxembourg, had her stuck at 15. But 8 out of the top 20 positions, were correct, with number 10 and 11 just reversed (nearly half, of the chart correct)...well done to Luxembourg 29 years ago! Let`s have some comments then...what do the other folks think? It may be nice to have a completely averaged Monday chart, every week, or not??

But, this year, now Capital Radio, are producing it in-house, it can improve. Lucio, tells us that this year, the full top 40, will be played every week. He will also run down the top 10 albums, at 6pm, then the top 10 official singles, will be played non-stop without ads, or hardly any chat. There will be a couple of pre-release songs played, each week, mingled with the chart. Does anyone remember NATASHA ENGLAND? In 1982, she had a top ten hit, with a re-make of IKO IKO (which, was also covered by the BELLE STARS, at the same time). This month, NATASHA, has re-recorded 9 different mixes of this, and hopes to take it back up the charts. Why has she re-recorded it, you may ask? Well, up to this point, it was the only top ten, hit of the 80s, unavailable digitally. That has now been rectified, and included with the Budapest mix, and the other 7 mixes, is the original mix, from the summer of 1982. Originally, meant to be released in Feb 1982, it was kept back for June 82. Will the 2008 mixes sell? Time will tell!

mrib etc charts for w/k ending 11/01
Hate that I Love You, is the only physical that is still about the top 40. I would think trying to find a physical version of Umbrella, might be difficult. I have not seen it in any shop, this side of last October! The amount of downloads, would out shine, physicals even more, at the bottom end of the combined Physical/downloads chart. If you took a purely physical top 75...the amount of copies the number 75 sold, would be just a handful of copies!

mrib etc charts for w/k ending 11/01
It`s a good one, and it even popped up, on a Sky music channel, last week! Quite a lot of females in that 92, chart, Mikey...
