The old MTV European Top 20 chart, which had been broadcast on MTV Europe for more than 20 years, ended in 2012. However, it looks like since January 4, 2014 some European "chart" has started being broadcast again on MTV Europe. The chart is broadcast on Fridays from 8:30 to 9:45 CET; on Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:45 CET; and on Sundays from 6:00 to 7:15 CET. At first the chart seemed to be a Top 40 but in later years MTV Europe sometimes showed positions between number 50 and number 41, indicating a Top 50. However, not all the positions were shown - some of them were skipped each week. It was also notable that the upper part of this chart was basically the same as the "Euro Top 20" chart broadcast on MTV Italy. However, in February 2021 there was a change in the way the chart was being made. Soon after, MTV Europe started showing just a Top 20. And since May 2022 the chart's name has changed to "MTV Top 20".

As far as I understand, it's not based on how well the songs did in the chart during the year but on the personal preferences of the chart-makers? In addition, I'd like to ask you whether you have any data from previous years - before 1991?

For the chart of January 4, 2025, MTV Europe didn't play a new edition of the chart. Instead, they repeated the chart of December 28, 2024!

Just like last year, in 2024 there were only 2 songs which spent a second (nonconsecutive) week at number 1 - "Lovin' On Me" by Jack Harlow and "Espresso" by Sabrina Carpenter. However, the first week of "Lovin' On Me" at the top happened in 2023. So this year there was only ONE song - "Espresso" - which managed to be at the top for 2 weeks. Yes, EVERY SINGLE other chart-topper in 2024 enjoyed merely one week at number 1!
