The old MTV European Top 20 chart, which had been broadcast on MTV Europe for more than 20 years, ended in 2012. However, it looks like since January 4, 2014 some European "chart" has started being broadcast again on MTV Europe. The chart is broadcast on Fridays from 9:00 to 10:15 CET; on Saturdays from 10:00 to 11:15 CET; and on Sundays from 6:00 to 7:15 CET. At first the chart seemed to be a Top 40 but in later years MTV Europe sometimes showed positions between number 50 and number 41, indicating a Top 50. However, not all the positions were shown - some of them were skipped each week. It was also notable that the upper part of this chart was basically the same as the "Euro Top 20" chart broadcast on MTV Italy. However, in February 2021 there was a change in the way the chart was being made. Soon after, MTV Europe started showing just a Top 20. And since May 2022 the chart's name has changed to "MTV Top 20".

For the chart of December 31, 2022, MTV Europe didn't play a new edition of the chart. Instead, they repeated the chart of December 24, 2022!

A similar peculiar situation arose in 2012 when for a week 2 different versions of "Payphone" - by Maroon 5 and by Precision Tunes - were in the chart simultaneously. Rihanna occupies the throne once again, this time with "Lift Me Up"! It's her first chart-topper since "Wild Thoughts", her collaboration with DJ Khaled. Whenever Rihanna reaches the top, I must mention that she's the artist with the most number ones in the history of MTV Europe's European chart! If I'm counting correctly, she has a total of 19 number ones... and they would have been 20 if there had been a European chart broadcast on MTV Europe between August 2012 and the end of 2013 ("Diamonds" would have reigned during that time)...

The song that denies "Anti-Hero" the number 1 spot is "Hide & Seek" by Stormzy. It's his first chart-topper; until now his peak position was number 5, achieved by "Own It" (with Ed Sheeran).
