  1. They've been running paramilitary training camps. This wouldn't even be a question if they weren't white.
  2. For all the astounding work he did - the Cuban health service has saved *millions* of lives across the developing world and has made breakthroughs that constitute actual medical miracles, almost solely thanks to the overwhelming support he gave it - it's quite difficult to get away from the uncountable human rights abuses he oversaw.
  3. RED ALERT RED ALERT THIS IS NOT A DRILL CHARLOTTE PERRELLI IS IN! http://www.aftonbladet.se/nojesbladet/article23988379.ab OMG THIS IS GOING TO BE AWFUL / INCREDIBLE / HEARTBREAKING / OMG I'M DEAD
  4. Yes, this is definitely the most worrying thing happening right now.

Of course, Thatcher and Merkel did benefit from not having an opposition party and media dedicated to trying to allege criminality at every opportunity for 20 years, to the extent where a baseless rumour could be reported with the caveat "there is as yet no solid evidence that x claim is true, but such stories will only add to the sense of untrustworthiness around Hillary Clinton". After all, you only have to look at how the FBI thing hit her lead and probably cost her the election despite being totally baseless. As with almost every single accusation levelled at her.

I'm tempted to get a quote on international election observers declaring the 2020 election to not reach internationally accepted democratic norms. Chillingly likely, I think.

    And therein lies the rub.

?! He's pledged to deport three million people and has said he will end the acceptance of Syrian refugees. He's going way past 'let's have a referendum on not accepting immigrants' on day one alone.

Corbyn doesn't exactly cover himself in glory on not consorting with anti-Semites, but at least he hasn't appointed an open anti-Semite as his Chief Strategist. Unlike Trump.

It's still *just* about fine. Scalia (the justice who died) was pretty hard right, so in practice another hard right judge just keeps things as they've been for the last few years - which has a slightly right of centre judge in Kennedy as the swing vote, but who was nonetheless enough to see the Supreme Court uphold gay marriage and Obamacare. Also enough when he went the wrong way for the Supreme Court to unpick key provisions of the Voter Rights Act and approve Citizens United, but we'll take what we can get for now. However, the really terrifying bit is that the Supreme Court not being weighted to the right for generations now depends on 83 year old cancer survivor Ruth Bader Ginsburg and 78 year old Stephen Breyer making it to 2020. Scalia died at 79.

I imagine the ACLU will be taking legal action against that on day one of his presidency.

I don't know, 3 million immigrants gone and a wall built feels like a pretty solid opener for your legion of racists that you can actually get stuff done. If he uses the massive infrastructure projects he has planned as an employment booster...well, that's a few things to point to for an audience already well disposed to him.

I can tell this is going to be a recurring pattern over the next four years, but please stop looking for silver linings.

The counting won't be finished for weeks, but it's looking likely to be a lead of around 2 million after the remaining 7 million ballots are counted. The cost is only unrealistic in the sense that any ordinary politician would look at it and judge the cost - both economic and moral - to be too high.

Trump to deport three million as his first action. The initial signs of Trump's presidency are horrifying, to say the least.

Ditto. The Dave Chappelle opening sketch was superb as well.

Anyone who thinks Bernie would've done better needs to have a really good answer for how he'd have sold across the board tax rises of 10 cents in the dollar to an America where two thirds of the population already thinks it is taxed too much. Also, Bernie vs. Trump would've meant Bloomberg would have run and had Trump win anyway.

Larger land area has nothing to do with democratic representation whatsoever. We kind of got over that affectation when we got rid of rotten borough some time in the 1830s.
