The Andrew Neil interview Liz Kendall did to kick off the leadership election was about how government should ensure people aren't left behind as a result of globalisation, something which she specified as one of New Labour's biggest failings. Not exactly 'let it collapse and let them eat cake'. For that matter, I don't think many MPs would avoid retweeting an article praising their constituency's football team's success as an example to all! In a parallel universe where one of the moderates was leader, I don't think they'd have taken the view that disability cuts are fine (unless you think their position would have been that literally no cut to welfare would have been opposed...though I actually wouldn't be surprised if you did).
  2. MORE NUCLEAR POWER NOW
  3. I wouldn't mind a referendum on nuclear deterrence at all. It might finally get it through to the anti-nuclear left that it's here to stay, particularly given Scotland would be in favour of keeping it and all.

Do you really think he was the driving force behind the disability benefit cuts being reversed?! As with the tax credits, it wasn't that Labour were opposing (pretty inadequately, given the lack of any coordinated media strategy on it) that was driving the issue, but that even Tory backbenchers were uneasy with the principle. I'd also add that Community Union (the steelmakers union which has a lot of moderate MP affiliates) gets pretty regularly accused of being a load of Blairite stooges. They and the affiliated MPs are taking anything but an 'oh just let it fail' position.
  6. That's what taxation is for, idiot. If you can't see how dangerous the principle of 'let people who believe in certain areas of government spending be the ones to pay for it' is, I despair. Uh, pretty commonly acknowledged as a key limitation of Soviet aggression in Europe throughout the Cold War, which says a lot given proving a negative is infamously quite difficult. To say nothing of the separate influence it's given us through getting a seat at the top table.
  7. I am sure he believes there ought to be no nukes in the world. For some strange reason that point is not his first priority when it comes to nations such as Iran having them.
  8. Exactly.
  9. This mischaracterisation (which has been very common on the left for the last few months) fucks me off so much. Nobody in favour of nukes ever wishes to see them used, just as nobody with a guard dog ever wishes to need it. It is a deterrent which wards off aggression that is both unlikely but very dangerous if it is ever to occur. And that we are unlikely to ever need to use it is no more an argument against it than it is an argument against buying house insurance.
  10. The least popular leader ever documented in polling is not going to win a general election, particularly when he is mostly unpopular as a result of verbatim statements or actions on his part. When given the choice between someone who believes in the death penalty and someone who believes Britain shouldn't have nukes but that Iran should, the UK (and essentially every developed nation) will opt for the former, media bias or not.
  11. That story really won't end the way you want it to.
  12. I used to quite like her by Tory standards, but every public appearance has made her come off a right ditz.
  13. IT WAS NOT (the main reason)
  14. Oh let's be honest, Himmel för två was great live but on record it's little more than cheap fun filler. You can really tell the Kempe pedigree to Bada nakna, even though it took me a while to really EMBRACE it

  16. Which just goes to show how shallow an ideology nationalism is. If you're spending your whole time arguing the problem for everything is that 'a different government' is in control...well, what does it say when you don't use any of the levers at your disposal?
  17. I think she's got an outside chance. There might be enough hang em and flog em MPs to get her to the final two.
  18. Is exactly what the Conservatives argued in 2012 to defend putting it down to 45p. Fair enough if the Nats genuinely believe the case - it's not the hill I'd die on in their position either. But they and their supporters can fucking shut up about 'red Tories!!!' if they're going to argue it with a straight face, because that's the *exact* kind of decision that got Labour accused of being traitors.

Wonderful that he's decided to finally try. Would be nice to see him do it for an issue which isn't restricted to about five constituencies.
  20. In her own head. She has the gravitas of a toad.

Well it wasn't so much news as an active lie - Labour isn't ahead in all polls!

Said commentators are utter morons. He hasn't overtaken nationally at all - Hillary has an average lead of about ten points in polls in the last couple of weeks. 65 percent of the remaining voted delegates are in New York, California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Even a 60/40 delegate split from here on out would not be enough for Sanders to win. Hillary is ahead - a lot of the time by quite some way - in all of those states. These are the results that Sanders would need to win. It isn't happening.
