Yeah I think I too was thinking of One For Sorrow, and maybe even 5678 as a bit of a left field choice? To the general public this is probably one of, if not their most recognisable hit so you could maybe understand why they’d think it was a big #1… especially as it’s usually accompanied by several #1s (Cha Cha Slide, Saturday Night) at every disco / club night! Macarena being a #2 also feels like a massive #1 for the same reason!

If people love an act but the song sent in a certain round is generally considered a bit of a dud, do people actually bump them up their rankings to try and save them? I guess it works the other way round too, by bombing acts to try and get rid?! I’m not saying I do this btw, I’m just genuinely curious 😂

I think Steps lost approx. 1500 sales that week. I’m not sure whether it was that close between them and Rui Da Silva though. But steps fans seem to just blame the retail error regardless 😂

On This Day… In 2001! Steps released Chain Reaction on 24th September 2001, making it a quarter of a century since its release! The song debuted at its peak of #2, losing out to Kylie’s Can’t Get You Out Of My Head (which was on its second week at the top!) I must say I did love this song and the video was pretty fun too! Definitely one of their better covers in my opinion!

Years & Years was the clear winner but I did discover a few new pleasant surprises in the form of Ultravox and Fontaines!

Yeah the sales were much higher than I thought too! But I guess first week sales in that period were always quite high, compared to the “highs” we see these days! As for their #1s, I too of course would’ve liked them to have had a few more (especially after the It’s The Way You Make Me Feel drama) but tbh, I’m just happy they got one at all!
