Decent set of qualifiers, great to see Arctics and A-ha qualify. Titanium topping the list just looks plain wrong but I'm not surprised. I was disappointed with the quality of the first two lists but they looked great compared to the general mediocracy of this 3rd list. Very difficult after the first half dozen. Dreading even more the one list which may be top heavy with quality to choose from. +30 David Bowie "Space Oddity" +25 Phillip Bailey and Phil Collins "Easy Lover" +22 Coldplay "Paradise" +20 Bros "I Owe You Nothing" +18 The Moody Blues "Go Now" +16 Cilla Black "Anyone Who Had a Heart" +14 LMFAO feat. Better selection than the first list, but still alot of dross (there really has been alot of crap No.1's). Fairly predictable set of results from List 1, glad to see the new Cheryl song which will be forgotten in 12 months just fail to qualify, although beating all three Beatles songs is criminal. Slightly bemused to see Titanium scoring heavily though not shocked, but pleasantly surprised to see the Arctic Monkeys also scoring very well. Fingers crossed it continues. I know we've had a hell of alot of bad No.1's over the years, this list seems to be heavily weighted in bad ones. Hoping that other lists are not heavily weighted in great No.1's (only my top 2 I would class as great) as despite this horrific list it was still blooming difficult to choose the 20. The artists with multiple No.1's seem to have the worst ones in this list (Madonna, Elvis, Oasis, Spice Girls....). Disappointed but not surprised to see 'Wannabe' scoring well, ghastly song IMO, but still far from being the worst in this 100. +30 The Beatles "Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby" - Just for the sublime "Eleanor Rigby" +25 Eminem feat. Wish I could give you the answer to this. It would have been around the period when there was genuine concerns that the singles chart was dying, not just due to the abysmal sales of the time but of the dwindling interest in the singles chart and the ridiculous weekly turnaround on the chart. Probably around the early to mid noughties. It would have very likely been within a Music Week article about the chart as it would have been before I was a member of any chart fan forum etc., and definitely before the download era commenced. Whether it was just an idea by the writer of the article or a record company exec or the chart compilers (which I agree is unlikely) I do not recall but it always stuck in my head as I thought it would definitely be interesting to see how that would pan out. If I had hours and hours to spare I would try and hunt it out as I have all my old Music Weeks in boxes in the attic but unfortunately I don't, maybe one day. The idea appealed to me as I loved the way the chart moved in the 70's and 80's so I was never a fan of the new number 1 each week and the dozens of new entries each week as you never got chance to grow to like a song before it disappeared again. Certainly don't think it was an idea that would have been seriously considered though.

Your threads are always great Gezza, but this thread is fantastic. The charts based on 3 weeks sales is something I've always wanted to work out myself if I had the appropriate information to hand so many thanks for doing this. The idea was touted briefly at some point when the singles chart was in decline to try and give it more stability and I personally thought it was possibly a good idea during the god awful days of new number one's every week (the majority of which have been forgotten by the general public). The other idea was also on working it out based on ratio of cost. It is without doubt that a significant amount of songs made no.1 only because they were available at a far cheaper price on that first week of release. Find it quite startingly how serious people can take a thread as if you are actually changing history, just because of a song (or more likely an act) they like has had a No.1 demoted based on the criteria of this thread. Have to agree with T Boy, it is very rude when someone has put in alot of hard work to produce a thread of interest to just moan about it. Stop reading it then. My favourite songs are predominantly by high fan based acts who have high first week sales so they will all be penalised by this criteria, but I won't be moaning. As Gezza has stated there is no definitive way of coming up with Non No.1's and as ever it is all down to opinion. Just sit back and enjoy. Great work Gezza, looking forward to reading what's to come.
