Ultimate 21st Century Number Twos Rate
Just to reiterate I wasn't talking about the members rating in this game regarding Rihanna but her chart success. Of course every artist has a fanbase which will give a new single a certain amount of success depending on the size of that fanbase, the quality of the song is immaterial. But there have been certain artists throughout the sands of time who are given more exposure as if to manipulate the youngsters (who always form the vast majority of the record buying public). Rihanna is currently one of those artists along with Lady GaGa. Yes I would agree that I prefer Rihanna's more 'pop' kind of material..........but what is classed as 'pop' nowadays and what is RnB? Her music is generally a combination of both IMO. How would you class 'Russian Roulette'. This is one of her songs I like but is generally criticized by her fans but yet it still got to No.2. Would it have for an unknown artist? No. Your explanation of the lyrics to 'What's My Name' certainly does give the song a different perspective for me, and if your interpretation is correct it does kind of have clever lyrics.......doesn't make it a good song. Just as there has been a number of songs over time with crap lyrics but have still been good songs. Unfortunately I can't get past the annoyingly repeatitive 'ooh na na, What's My Name' lyric without wanting to put my fist through the speakers. Again if this has been a song by an unknown featuring Drake I do not believe it would have been a hit. This is the point I am making. I think the chorus of 'Rude Boy' is also what gives that song it's annoying edge. Of course time will come when Rihanna will not get the same exposure and her songs chart success will start to wain.

My comment wasn't aimed at anybody voting in this game but at the general record buying public (or download buying - doesn't quite have the same ring about it). The fact that "Rude Boy" is in this list as a No.2 hit proves my point. If a nobody had released it, or "What's My Name" for that matter, they would have been panned for being utter garbage. It's also not really aimed at Rihanna either. "Only Girl (In The World)" is a great pop song, fully deserved no.1. Unfortunately despite a few of us having the same thoughts regarding "Rude Boy" in the end I fear it may have picked up enough points to get into the Top 7. This rating game has produced a few genuine pleasing results as it's not been totally predictable - I just hope everyone has been truly honest with their ratings. All, of course, is IMHO. ;) Wouldn't it be boring if we all had the same opinion.

Another poor list, leaving 2007 as the only decent list of No.2´s. Can´t quite believe that Glee´s awful cover, the horrible Florence/Dizzy mash up, the painful Jason Derulo song or even Jedward could get -2 on this list but there was something even more vile lurking. +15 Aloe Blacc – I Need A Dollar Brilliant chart run, great song +12 Take That – The Flood Only about the 5th/6th best song on the album but they are the most consistent act presently +10 Tinie Tempah feat Labrinth – Frisky Really like Mr Tempah, preferred "Pass Out" and "Wonderman though" +8 Adele – Rolling In The Deep Not a big Adele fan but this is her best song yet +6 Ellie Goulding – Your Song Beautiful Ellie with a decent cover, "Starry Eyed" was one of best tracks of 2010 +5 Sidney Samson feat Wizard Sleeve – Riverside (Let’s Go) Reminds me of Harry Hill so always raises a smile +4 Robbie Williams & Gary Barlow – Shame +3 Katy Perry – Teenage Dream +2 Wretch 32 feat Example – Unorthodox Not great but still better than most on this list, Example´s "Kickstarts" was probably my favourite record of 2010. +1 K’naan – Wavin’ Flag -2 Rihanna – Rude Boy Another OMG who the hell liked this moment. Oh, but it´s Rihanna so we must like it. Dire, dire, dire song

Back to a not so good list of songs. Not even heard of two of these. +15 OutKast – Ms Jackson Easy, easy winner from this list. Probably was the best song all together in 2001 +12 Michael Jackson – You Rock My World +10 D12 & Eminem – Purple Pills +8 Wheatus – Teenage Dirtbag +6 Sophie Ellis Bextor – Murder On The Dancefloor +5 Superman Lovers – Starlight +4 Gordon Haskell – How Wonderful You Are +3 Ronan Keating – Lovin’ Every Day +2 Sophie Ellis Bextor – Take Me Home +1 Misteeq – All I Want -2 Destinys Child – Bootylicious Overrated and rubbish, just sneaks it ahead of dire Steps cover and poor U2 song

Don´t know whether is just because I´m sat by a pool in Gran Canaria so I´m in a good mood but this is actually a decent selection of songs :o Would give all the ones I´ve scored at least 6/10 with the Top 5 all rated highly. +15 50 Cent – Ayo Technology Not my sort of artist, hate everything else he has done but absolutely love this +12 Take That – Rule The World One of their very best.......brilliant live +10 Kate Nash – Foundations Another fantastic song, so deserved No.1, not really liked anything else she´s done disappointingly +8 Fall Out Boy – This Ain’t A Scene It’s an Arms Race +6 Plain White T’s – Hey There Delilah +5 Just Jack – Starz In Their Eyes +4 Artic Monkeys – Brianstorm +3 Mark Ronson – Stop Me +2 Avril Lavinge – Girlfriend +1 Gwen Stefani – The Sweet Escape -2 T2 feat Jodie Aysha – Heartbroken Despite all the good songs, their is still some right rubbish listed and this song did my head in as could not believe it was that well liked

It's getting worse.... :( Just spent a thrilling last half hour reminding myself of a number of these, again I realised why I can't remember them! The charts were in such a poor way for some of these songs to get to No.2. So utterly forgettable, I could recall 95%, at least, of the No.2's from 70's, 80's and 90's - upto about 1997 when the charts just become ridiculously fast. On a positive at least the 2007 result was pretty good (apart from the wildcards). +15 Girls Aloud – Love Machine Far and away their best.........classic pop song +12 Libertines – Can’t Stand Me Now +10 Kelis – Trick Me +8 Girls Aloud – The Show +6 Kelis – Milkshake +5 D12 & Eminem – My Band +4 Ice Cube feat Mack 10 & Ms Toi – You Can Do It +3 Rachel Stevens – Some Girls +2 Ronan Keating – She Believes (In Me) +1 Kylie Minouge – I Believe In You -2 4-4-2 – Come on England Hideous, Come On Eileen is hideous enough without updating it into a football song

Top of the Pops on Thursdays, bbc 4.
They are worth watching currently if only for the beautiful Cherry Gillespie (Pan's People, Ruby Flipper).

We're not going to get a decent selection of No.2's from the 00's are we? +15 Sam Sparro – Black & Gold By some distance the best song on this list +12 Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah The best version of this song without doubt +10 Flo Rida feat T-Pain – Low Hated this when initially released but grown on me greatly over time +8 Kings of Leon – Use Somebody Wasn't as fussed with KOL as everyone else seemed to be at the time. 'Sex On Fire' much better +6 Wiley – Wearing My Rolex Not the sort of song I'd usually like but this grew on me also +5 Geraldine – The Winners Song Brilliant parody, taken far too seriously by people..........and coincidently seeing the man himself tonight +4 Adele – Chasing Pavements Grated on me fairly quick, Duffy deservedly won the initial battle. Her new album is better but not as blown away as the general public have been +3 Eric Prydz – Pjanoo +2 Basshunter – All I Ever Wanted +1 Nickelback – Rockstar -2 Soulja Boy Tell Em – Crank That (Soulja Boy) :puke2: One of the most horrible songs of all time. How on earth was it even released?

This game is just showing up how bad the charts have been since the turn of the century, not just for the poor quality of music (so much of it forgettable) but also that songs would get a high chart peak on it's first week then quickly disappear (making them even more forgettable). 36 songs to choose from and only one I would honestly give 8/10 for. Could have so easily given -2 to about 15 of these!!! Had to remind myself of the charts of 2003 to see if it was just a case of spectacularly bad No.2's but no it appears that 2003 is possibly a contender for worst year in chart music ever. (All IMO obviously ;) ) +15 Justin Timberlake – Cry Me a River Great song, was pleasantly surprised at the quality of his debut album +12 Rachel Stevens – Sweet Dreams My LA Ex Decent pop song, another good Cathy Dennis composition. Gorgeous, gorgeous Rachel  +10 Justin Timberlake – Rock Your Body Kept off the top by the criminally bad 'Ignition' +8 Girls Aloud – No Good Advice Ditto as above +6 Kevin Lyttle – Turn Me On +5 The Darkness – I Believe In a Thing Called Love +4 Electric Six – Danger! High Voltage! +3 The Darkness – Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End) +2 Mis-teeq – Scandalous +1 Black Eyed Peas – Shut Up -2 Britney Spears feat Madonna – Me Against the Music Vile, abomination......the very worst of an horrific bunch The other nominations for the -2 award were: Jay-Z feat. Beyonce – 03 Bonnie & Clyde - really don't get it!!! Kelly Rowland – Stole - so, so dull and forgettable DJ Sammy – The Boys of Summer - criminally bad cover version of a classic Jennifer Lopez feat LL Cool J – All I Have - what? Madonna – American Life - Madge during the worst period of her career 2000-2003 (Hollywood was bearable), at least this is not as bad as American Pie! Lisa Maffia – All Over - again......what? Big Brovaz – Favourite Things - really? Who the hell bought this? :puke2: Fast Food Rockers – Fast Food Song - says something that this is more bearable than the other nominations for the -2 Lumidee – Never Leave You (Uh Oooh Uh Oooh) - how the hell did this make the top 40, never mind No.2? Beyonce feat. Sean Paul – Baby Boy - still don't get it! Overrated featuring How did you get away with it more than once? Blazin’ Squad – Flip Reverse - How did the get a recording contract? Someone on the youtube clip claims one of them now works in McDonalds.........says it all. Shane Ritchie – I’m Your Man - It was for charity I suppose, but didn't like the original either. With special mentions also for Blue 'Guilty' which was very boring, and Benny Benassi 'Satisfaction' which is only memorable for the video.

Very tricky to split the top three as rate them all highly. Not an Elvis fan whatsoever, but the few tracks of his I quite like all seemed to make No.2 in the re-issue era! Bizarre! +15 Gorillaz – Feel Good Inc. Loved pretty much the majority of there input as I did with Blur +12 Kanye West feat Jamie Foxx – Gold Digger Took a few years before I really liked this +10 Razorlight – Somewhere Else Would have got +15 in most other years +8 Elvis Presley – Way Down My favourite Elvis track, can't explain why as I'm not sure! +6 Coldplay – Speed of Sound +5 Elvis Presley – Wooden Heart +4 Rihanna – Pon de Replay +3 Oasis – Let There Be Love +2 Robbie Williams – Tripping +1 Elvis Presley – (You’re The) Devil In Disguise -2 Westlife feat Diana Ross – When You Tell Me That You Love Me Detested immensely the original, adding Westlife surprisingly didn't help!! Having reminded myself of the Sean Paul track that nearly got the -2 also. Shame the boring Manics song together with the first of the Elvis re-issues denied Killers 'Somebody Told Me' from either a No.1 or No.2. All in all the best year so far we've rated IMO.

I've always hated the term 'guilty pleasure' in music, implying that you should feel embarrassed to like certain songs. Why? I like lots of songs which alot of people would class as 'guilty pleasure', but surely this says more about there own hang-ups than anything else. Bray's quote regarding A1 also shows up what is wrong with the general record buying public. They either assume that a song is bad because it's by a certain act, or vice versa, that a song is going to be brilliant because it's by an act such as Lady GaGa before they've even heard it. I really do not understand this way of thinking. Sure you can be excited by new material on the horizon by your favourite artist but that does not automatically mean it's going to be good. Also if you've not heard some of the tracks listed in this list it doesn't take long to check them out on YouTube. I couldn't remember a good number of the 2000 No.2's and hadn't even heard or could recall the Sweet Female Attitude track but I still gave it a listen.

How to remind myself of alot of these. Despite the majority not doing much for me, actually didn't detest any majorly like in all previous rates. +15 Samantha Mumba – Gotta Tell You Only a 7/10 but enough to top this list +12 Moloko – The Time is Now +10 Daft Punk – One More Time +8 Sonique – Sky +6 True Steppers & Dane Bowers feat Victoria Beckham – Out Of Your Mind Shouldn't have liked this but kinda did +5 S Club 7 – Reach Slight unhealthy obsession with Rachel Stevens made me watch S Club 7 videos more than necessary!! +4 Blink 182 – All The Small Things +3 S Club 7 – Two In A Million/You’re My Number One +2 Robbie Williams & Kylie Minouge – Kids +1 Zombie Nation – Kernkraft 400 -2 Bomfunk MC’s – Freestyler Westlife or Baha Men would have been a lazy -2, this is probably the worst of a below par bunch
-

Still at lot of rubbish but at least a few decent ones amongst them compared to 2006. +15 Will Young – Don’t Let Me Down/You And I Top marks for 'You And I' solely as not too fussed on 'Don't Let Me Down' +12 Oasis – Stop Crying Your Heart Out Brings back bad memories but still think it's a great song +10 X Press 2 – Lazy +8 Justin Timberlake – Like I Love You +6 Coldplay – In My Place +5 Puretone – Addicted to Bass +4 No Doubt – Hey Baby +3 Appleton – Fantasy +2 Oasis – Little By Little/She Is Love +1 Shakira – Whenever Wherever -2 Ali G feat Shaggy – Me Julie Could have happily given -2 to at least a dozen of these but this wasn't even remotely funny

Quite agree on both points. I probably would have had Cliff a couple of places higher at least if it was just 'Move It' but the Christmas song dragged it back down. As for some not knowing a track then surely if you participate in a rating game such as this you should make yourself aware of all the songs. I couldn't remember a few of this bad bunch of No 2's so had a quick listen to remind me, admittedly wish I hadn't bothered another part of my life I won't get back! (obviously the reason I'd chosen to forget). And yes you are correct if it wasn't Cliff and Christmas the song wouldn't even had made it into this game. Always find it amusing that some people talk about chart music so passionately but yet have no knowledge, and do not want to have any knowledge, of songs from before they were born. Too me all music is timeless. Yes it can define a period but the year it was made makes no difference to whether I should like it or not.

Buzzjack's Favourite 2010 Songs Rate!
Everyone's idea of the best remembered songs of a particular year would be different, but a good idea anyway. I can't personally even remember a couple of those listed already!! +15 Tinie Tempah - Pass Out Took me a while to get into it but love it now +12 Ellie Goulding - Starry Eyed Liked immediately but has continued to grow +10 Cee-Lo Green - F*** You In danger of becoming a song that suffers from overkill +8 Take That - The Flood Not even in the top 5 on the album IMO and unfortunately have become an album band now. Take That Mk II much better than the 90's version +6 Katy Perry - Firework She may shout it but it's a good pop song +5 Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) Much prefer Rihanna with simple upbeat tracks like this +4 Plan B - She Said +3 Tinie Tempah - Written In The Stars +2 Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are +1 Taio Cruz - Dynamite -2 Rihanna feat Drake - What's My Name :puke2: Has to rate closely as the most awful track to hit my ears in all my years. A song that proves some artists can really release any rubbish and it will be lapped up because of who they are. Still absolutely flabbergasted this was so so successful.

:puke2: Oh my god!!!!!! I knew this would be bad but this list is truly awful. Hope we are starting with the worst year! What is amusing is the "we must give -2 to Cliff because it's Cliff" brigade. '21st Century Christmas' was awful, granted but 'Move It' is a great oldie. As is always the case, even with the actual charts, it is the artist that the public buy not that actual song. Brainwashing at it's best. +15 U2 & Green Day – The Saints Are Coming Not as good as the Skids original but not alot to beat here. +12 The Killers – When You Were Young +10 Rihanna – S.O.S +8 Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Dani California +6 Cliff Richard – 21st Century Christmas/Move It +5 Pussycat Dolls feat will.i.am – Beep +4 Embrace – Nature’s Law +3 Booty Luv – Boogie 2nite +2 Justin Timberlake feat. Timbaland – My Love +1 Corinne Bailey Rae – Put Your Records On -2 Chamillionaire feat Krayzie Bone – Ridin’

That was extremely difficult. Can't believe how many great songs I couldn't even find the odd point for. Some very bizarre scoring going on elsewhere though!! :o The original scores are not going to give any indication of the overall result by the look of it. +15 David Bowie "Ashes To Ashes" +12 Pet Shop Boys "Westend Girls" Bizarrely not scoring at all despite romping away with '86 result +10 A-ha "The Sun Always Shines On TV" +8 Frankie Goes To Hollywood "Two Tribes" +6 Pet Shop Boys "It's A Sin" +5 Specials "Ghost Town" +4 Culture Club "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" +3 Pet Shop Boys "Heart" +2 Madonna "La Isla Bonita" +1 Blondie "Atomic" -2 John Lennon "Imagine" Close call between this and "Come On Eileen" - both vastly overrated compared to other tracks in both artists catalogue Great thread though, very interesting to see the differences in opinion.

Not as bad as 1988 but still a disappointing bunch of No.1's. The '88 result could have been worse but still some dubious taste around ;) +15 Black Box “Ride On Time” Has stood the test of time very well +12 Soul II Soul “Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)” +10 Lisa Stansfield “All Around The World” +8 Madonna “Like a Prayer” +6 Simple Minds “Belfast Child” +5 The Bangles “Eternal Flame” Disliked at the time but the abysmal AK cover showed how good the original was, Susanna Hoffs certainly makes it easier to watch +4 Marc Almond feat. Gene Pitney “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart” +3 Jason Donovan “Too Many Broken Hearts” The guitar playing of Jason in the vid always brings a smile +2 Kylie Minogue “Hand On Your Heart” +1 Jive Bunny and The Mastermixers “Swing The Mood” Gains a point as initially it was good but it all quickly became very tiresome -2 Sonia “You’ll Never Stop Me From Loving You” :puke2: SAW were now really starting to take the proverbial, even worse (just) than the Band Aid II cover

Ultimate 80s Number Ones Rate 1988
This is the worst year by far for No.1's in the 80's. The hardest decision was which one I detested the most to give -2. On a positive note it was nice to see my top four from 1987 finish in the same order. +15 Pet Shop Boys “Heart” Third +15 in a row for PSB, amazed to think now that this was their final chart topper +12 Bros “I Owe You Nothing” Easily dismissed as it's unfashionable to like Bros but this is a great pop song. The illegal mix was a big fav at the time +10 S-Express “Theme From S-Express” +8 Wet Wet Wet and Billy Bragg with Cara Tivey “With A Little Help From My Friends/She’s Leaving Home” +6 Aswad “Don’t Turn Around” Agree with Richie, 'Next To You' is a much better track and an injustice it only got to No.24 +5 Yazz and The Plastic Population “The Only Way Is Up” Another song to suffer over the years to overkill +4 U2 “Desire” +3 Belinda Carlisle “Heaven Is A Place on Earth” Preferred 'Circle In The Sand' +2 Timelords “Doctorin’ The Tardis” +1 The Hollies “He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother” Not one of my fav Hollies hits but better than the rest here -2 Fairground Attraction “Perfect" How did Glenn Medeiros, Robin Beck, Tiffany and Cliff escape.......but I really did dislike this song

The year my obsession with music and the charts truly kicked in. Over 7000 vinyl singles, 500+ CD singles, 1000+ downloads later...... +15 Pet Shop Boys “It’s a Sin” The song that I feel was mainly responsible for my obsession to start just as it hit No.1 +12 Madonna “La Isla Bonita” Still my favourite Madonna song +10 Pet Shop Boys “Always On My Mind” Not that keen on the Pogues song anyway, so chuffed to bits when this got Xmas No.1 +8 M/A/R/R/S “Pump Up The Volume/Anita (The First Time I See She Dance)” +6 Michael Jackson with Siedah Garrett “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” +5 Madonna “Who’s That Girl” +4 Steve “Silk” Hurley “Jack Your Body” +3 T’Pau “China In Your Hand” Not as good as 'Heart And Soul' +2 The Bee Gees “You Win Again” +1 The Firm “Star Trekkin” -2 Ferry Aid “Let it Be” Probably the one Beatles song I truly dislike so a cover wasn't going to go down well, even if it was for charity

Actually found this the hardest one so far as don't care much for the majority of these. It is quite fascinating to see how the ratings turn out and the various comments made, as the diversity in taste is quite remarkable. I find some of the scores quite staggering. +15 Phillip Bailey & Phil Collins “Easy Lover” Can't quite believe how badly this is scoring against some of the dull alternatives +12 Foreigner “I Want To Know What Love Is” +10 Paul Hardcastle “19” +8 Madonna “Into The Groove” +6 Phyllis Nelson “Move Closer” +5 Shakin’ Stevens “Merry Christmas Everyone” +4 Feargal Sharkey “A Good Heart" +3 Midge Ure “If I Was” +2 Eurytmics “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)” +1 Whitney Houston “Saving All My Love For You” -2 Elaine Paige & Barbra Dickson “I Know Him So Well”
