70's, 60's, 80's in that order for me with 90's and 00's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the field
70's easily for me as that is when my favourite genre classic rock first started making a big impact
Probably 10% at most of my music collection is from 1990 onwards
Anyone that says the 00's must be on a wind up
but the question was 'was the 60's the best decade for pop'.... not 'what was your favourite decade for pop'... and then you go on about 'clasic rock'..lol..
-
I do love the 60's too - I think it was a ground-breaking period. Having said that ... it had its fair share of cr*p just as much as any other decade!
Norma
true... there was some awful stuff about, especially early 60's, pre-beatles.. and late 60's when business got control of it. for eg, manfred mann 'sold out' to commercialism, mm himself loved jazz and wanted like many other 60's acts to experiment and play 'cool' music. however they have to live and sold out , they played stuff they HATED , ragamuffin man etc...

well i dont know if theres anything in this... but its work a thought.
theres a 9 year old little girl missing in wakefield (i think), been missing for nearly 2 weeks now. on the radio earlier a 12 year old had been abducted but thankfully got free, and apparently another 9 year old also had a similar experience (and again got away)...
now im wondering IF theres any connection to the 'maddie' disappearance. im NOT saying the same person has done it... but..
to any p****, theyve seen that abducting children CAN be done, the mass media coverage still has brought no results regarding madeline mccann.. im wondering if the recent attempts are a direct result , pervs CAN get away with it..... meanwhile a 9 year old is still missing.

do you like this cheesy song?
it was overplayed as hell by radio stations...
:D
not a deal actually, but in my album id try to get some variety, (ok most are britpop acts...lol) and it was reprisentitive of that era especially if like me youd been to spain that year. guess its nostalgia value is greater then its actual merit as a song...lol.
-
My friend put it perfectly the other day.
thats rather a dumb statement tbh... try 'because hes royalty'... dont you think that if the taliban captured or killed harry the ramification would be far greater then if it was 'jo bloggs'?... yep, hes an ordinary bloke but like it or not he carries a premium on his head where as 'jo bloggs' doesnt.

Ive been bought up to the noughties. I think your average song has a lot more texture and depth nowadays
theres utterly no soul in music now.... they sing from the wallet and not from a creative perspective as they did in the 60's.
this can be seen more then ever in black music... instead of singing about deep emotional love (i was made to love her, worship and adsore her' ) they sing about rapeing white girls, drugs, robbery, ... but mainly just sex... thats 'deep'?
and if you have 'indie' in mind, again theres not 1 indie group who hasnt copied 60's derived music, thats hardly 'deep'.
the only thing that 'modern' music does have on 'retro' is production techniques that OF COURSE has developed over the last 40 years.... but that doesnt make music today better, just easier to create,.

ok guys... lets start!
the 'my album of' idea is to take a topic, a theme, anything like a year, genre, mood, anything that can link tracks. the idea is then to list the tracks that YOU would use on this album, max 12, min 8, and to give a brief commentary on it. people are then free to comment and add their own album list on that threads theme. i want to keep it as an individual choice and not a collective, this way more obscure tracks will get airtime. simply title the thread "my album of" followed by the topic ... over to you!
1996 was quite a good year IMHO and the best for music for ten years, heres my listing of some great tracks that would be on my 'album of.... 1996'.
1 Oasis - 'dont look back in anger' . gotta be an all time anthem and one that if the beatles had released it in '67 could have been THE record of the decade. to me it has everything a damn good pop song should have, one of the best tracks of the 90's.
2 Age of love - 'age of love' a superb dance track that was one of the first 'ibiza' style trance tracks
3 Harvey danger - 'flagpole sitta' a great little upbeat track use as the theme for mitchell and webbs 'peep show'
4 Echobelly - 'dark therapy' utterly love this little known track, superb harmonies, great guitar.
5 Trick baby - 'indie yarn' a real odd track, asian indie, but i like the attempt of trying something different.
6 Cher - 'one by one' i reckon her best since 'gypsies tramps and theives' in 71..
7 Supergrass - 'going out' britpop top group with i reckon their best track.
8 Bluetones - 'marblehead johnson' another britpop classic, superb guitar riff, their best track .
9 Los del rio - 'macarena' lol... well... i went to spain!
10 Stretch n verne presents maddog - 'im alive' a lively dance track
11 BBE - 'seven days and one week' another good ibiza anthem, like its 'sunny' sound, it fits ibiza and sums up that holiday feel...
12Cast - 'sandstorm' britpopers again imho reaching their zenith, love this track.

without the 60's thered be no 70's, 80's, 90's or 00's..
the 00's the best?... but EVERYTHING around now is directly derived from the 60's!
the header posted the question 'was the 60's the best era for pop music', not what was your favourite era for pop music.... which is a totally different proposition.!!!
how can people "brought up in the naughties" possibly understand the mood of music in the 60's?.. (or 70's 80's 90's)??? you cant! god for those of us who were around at the time struggle to get it right, remembering the socio/political scene that determined musical direction.
there has NEVER been , and never will be now, such a creative period in musical history because it was all NEW . groups vying for 'cred' as new techniques were discovered monthly and the whole blank canvass of opportunity was rapidly being filled. EVERYTHING that has come since owes a debt of gratitude to the 60's and mainly to the beatles who led the pop revolution.

I was also in two minds on this one.
He should be there to serve his country, after all he is a soldier and why should he be treated differently, but on the other hand, he is a sitting target and all his fellow troops around him. So thinking about it, it was the best thing for him to be pulled out. But good on him for doing his bit. Well done Harry
Now i want to say about my man who is out there fighting for his country, come back home safe soon babe. :(
i agree... to the ginger t**** credit he has never shyed away for his responsability, he got ten weeks out there and would have been longer too...
be safe 'mr beautiful angel'..lol

theres no one all encompasing answer...
generally no... 99% of murders/accidental deaths would not warrant the death penalty. i think its a barabaric , medieval way of metering out punishment...
however
there are exceptions to the rule... ian huntley? ian brady? myra hindley? fred west? ... theres NO DOUBT at all that they did do the crime, also mass murderers, terrorists who have committed mass killing.

I can't wait for Obama to be voted President because all you people (none of whom have ever lived in the US) will be proven wrong.
EDIT: Made a generalization last night I regret... still, I hope Obama's election will prove America isn't as racist (anymore) as many believe it is.
.... well said!

I think this is what lead the British public astray - Andy Abraham's WAS the best performance. He's the only one who stayed in tune throughout the night (listen to how ragged Michelle Gayle got towards the end of her second performance). I think The Revelations had the best song but they couldn't sell it because of a poor vocal performance. I don't blame the public, I blame the organisers for giving the best song to some shopgirl wannabes. Back to the make-up counter at Boots for them I fear!
yeah... maybe the public was confused after watching so many tv talent shows, but the eurovision song contest is littered historically with less then perfect performances... sandie shaws 'puppet on a string' was a very poor performance but went on to win...
MY ALBUM OF...... 1996
in 20th Century Retro
oh heck!.... just checked... i knew 'age of love' (like cafe del mar) was created much earlier then when it finally charted, but 'age of love' was actually a hit in 98!!! not as i believed in '96...
ill substitute 'age of love' for chicane 'offshore'...another superb dance/trance track :)
as for cast n oasis... fair play, these threads are about personal tastes, and you dont have to chose a year for 'MY ALBUM OF' , you can chose any topic, and add your own for '96 here on this thread.
